In order to evaluate their adjustment to pelvic exenteration, 15 women were studied over a 3 year period. Despite the stresses to which these patients were subjected, over-all social and psychological adjustment was favorable. The majority returned to their preoperative positions and enjoyed regular recreational activities. Only 2 patients were significantly disturbed, according to psychometric examinations. One of these had been institutionalized for mental illness several years before the cancer ...

AbstractThe capability of global navigation satellite system (GNSS) reflected signals for ocean altimetry can be enhanced by the use of carrier-phase measurements. The reflected signals have a Doppler spread inherent to the geometry of the measurement system, in our case of interest, a satellite in low Earth orbit flying over the rough sea surface illuminated by a constellation of GNSS transmitters. Carrier-phase measurements are thus difficult because of the short coherence time of the signal and ...

This paper describes a series of experiments designed to recover phosphorus and nitrogen from sewage in the form of struvite (MgNH4PO4·6H2O), a potential fertilizer. Nitrogen and phosphate were recovered from a filtrate of digested sludge dewatered at the Arroyo del Soto Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) (Madrid, Spain). A byproduct of the Spanish magnesite mining and MgO production industry was used as the magnesium source. The precipitating performance of this byproduct was compared to that of conventional ...

A comparative study of a fermentation process for total volatile fatty acids (TVFA) production using pilot-scale fixed-bed (FAS) and suspended biomass (FER) reactors in which similar operational conditions was carried out. The influence of the changes of ambient temperatures at fixed operational conditions was also studied. Oxidation–reduction potential (ORP) increased and effluent pH decreased as the hydraulic retention time (HRT) decreased, which was favourable for TVFA production. Equations describing ...

Abstract Drug binding to Human Serum Albumin (HSA) is an area of intense research. The pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of drugs are strongly affected by their binding to this protein. In this article, the field is reviewed, as well as our models to predict drug‐binding affinities to HSA from drug structure. The physiological role of HSA is described, as well as its influence in drug action. The crystal structures of this protein are discussed, emphasizing the two drug‐binding sites and the ...

This paper presents the use of an effluent derived from two-stage anaerobic digestion of two-phase olive mill solid waste (OMSW) as a substrate for the production of Chlorella zofingiensis in batch mode. Chlorella zofingiensis when grown autotrophycally can accumulate significant quantities of valuable carotenoids which are used as an additive in fish and poultry farming, as colorants in foods and in health care products. It was found that two-phase OMSW previously treated by two-stage anaerobic ...

The performance of two laboratory-scale fluidized bed reactors with natural zeolite as support material when treating high-strength distillery wastewater was assessed. Two sets of experiments were carried out. In the first experimental set, the influences of the organic loading rate (OLR), the fluidization level (FL) and the particle diameter of the natural zeolite (DP) were evaluated. This experimental set was carried out at an OLR from 2 to 5 g COD (chemical oxygen demand)/l d, at FL 20% and 40% and ...

A carbon nanotube/perovskite composite material was developed as material for air electrodes in fuel cells or zinc-air batteries. For this purpose, carbon nanotubes were directly grown on the perovskite La0.6Sr0.4CoO3 impregnated with Fe solution which acted as substrate. The synthesis was carried out in a fluidised bed reactor. The carbon source was acetylene. The influence of the temperature on the growth of carbon nanotubes and on the stability of the perovskite was investigated. All samples ...

Plasmodium falciparum is the most prevalent and deadly species of the human malaria parasites, and thioredoxin reductase (TrxR) is an enzyme involved in the redox response to oxidative stress. Essential for P. falciparum survival, the enzyme has been highlighted as a promising target for novel antimalarial drugs. Here we report the discovery and characterization of seven molecules from an antimalarial set of 13533 compounds through single-target TrxR biochemical screens. We have produced high-purity, ...

Here we report the detection of GT and bmGT in serum of humans at risk of invasive aspergillosis (IA) as well as in cultures of fungal isolates derived from patients with proven infection with A. fumigatus. Although both compounds are readily recoverable from spiked human serum or plasma, only bmGT is retained in whole blood, indicating that bmGT may ...

The Mycobacterium tuberculosis insertion sequence IS6110, besides being a very useful tool in molecular epidemiology, seems to have an impact on the biology of bacilli. In the present work, we mapped the 12 points of insertion of IS6110 in the genome of a successful strain named M. tuberculosis Zaragoza (which has been referred to as the MTZ strain). This strain, belonging to principal genetic group 3, caused a large unsuspected tuberculosis outbreak involving 85 patients in Zaragoza, Spain, in 2001 ...
