Excerpts are presented from a 1962 paper by Fernando Corbato, M. Merwin-Daggett, and R.C. Daley. The selection from the paper, which reported work completed in late 1961, is reprinted from Proc. Spring Joint Computer Conf., vol.21, 1962. In this system, the time-sharing occurs among four users, three of whom are online each at a typewriter in a foreground system, and a fourth passive user of the background FAP-MAD-MADTRAN-BSS Monitor System used by most of the MIT Computation Center programmers ...

The hardware scheme designed to implement an experimental IBM System/360, Model 40 time-sharing system will be discussed. The concept of a virtual system will be introduced which allows up to fifteen simultaneous users on the system, each user assuming he has a complete hardware-software of his own. The problem of building and interfacing a 64- word associative memory mapping device into an existing hardware system will be reviewed.

The requirements for time-sharing a computer to control and monitor multiple experiments in a solid state physics and physical chemistry laboratory are discussed. A monitor system, which has been implemented on the IBM 1800, to control multiple spectroscopic experiments and collect their data is described. It provides flexible analog and digital input/output routines which, using a multilevel interrupt system, operate in a background mode once they have been initiated from a foreground program, ...

... major innovations. High-level languages; solid-state logic; compatible machine ranges; disk storage; time-sharing; data communications; virtual machine architectures; the use of LSI and solid-state memory; text processing; personal computers; sucessful packaged software; each advance in its turn has opened up new markets and set off a new spurt of expansion. A vital conclusion of this study is that expert systems promise to be another such major innovation.

In the middle 1960s IBM responded to pressure from its most prestigious customers to hasten the development and availability of computer time-sharing systems. When MIT and Bell Laboratories chose General Electric computers for their new time-sharing system, IBM management feared that the "prestige luster" of these customers would lead other customers to demand the same capabilities and that there would be a "snow-balling" effect as more customers rejected IBM computers. IBM worked on a time-sharing ...

An IBM 1800 time-sharing system is used in our X-ray laboratory to control a four-circle diffractometer for structure research, several powder diffractometers, a pole-figure goniometer and a microdensitometer along with other instruments outside the diffraction area. A survey of the computer system is given and the hardware necessary to automate the diffractometers is discussed. The computer supervision ranges from simple data-logging with a minimum of control to complete control of all actions ...

Abstract μPDSM, a powder diffraction search/match system, is derived from the original interactive time-sharing system written for the NIH/EPA Chemical Information System. Transformed and essentially rewritten, it still searches the entire JCPDS database, but on an inexpensive IBM PC microcomputer. In the transition from mainframe to micro, μPDSM has lost none of its speed or performance. Indeed, the basic discriminating power of the search/match algorithms had to be improved, since the Powder Diffraction ...

MISAR is a general-purpose, time-sharing, information-storage and retrieval system that facilitates the rapid creation, maintenance, and searching of small data files. MISAR permits a registry to be created, records to be entered, existing records to be examined and edited, and a search to be conducted from a teletypewriter or from a teletype-compatible terminal connected by telephone lines to a PDP-9 or PDP-15 computer. The principal advantage of MISAR is the ease ...

I have constructed a command list, which we use for small runs of up to a few minutes CPU time. This became necessary when the IBM 3033 was so loaded with time sharing that even very small batch runs might have a turn-around time of several hours. On the 3081 it is not needed, but very convenient. The command list is interactive, the program of course not. Only minimal output is taken to the screen; most is directed to a fast printer. The command list is reproduced below.
