Jonathan Cohen,

The present study explores the factors influencing Israeli teenage viewers' choice of their favorite TV character from a popular night‐time serial. Participants were asked to choose a character from the show's cast of characters, and explain why they preferred that character. Results show that choices of characters were predicted by viewer sex and nationality, and that the reasons for character preferences are related more to attributes of the character than to attributes of the viewer.

Daniela Schlütz,

AbstractLately, so-called quality TV series have been extremely successful—both in terms of audience shares and critical acclaim. Thus, the purpose of this chapter is to define the concept of quality serial television, giving a brief history of its development, systematizing its characteristics, and modeling the entertainment experience. I will argue that quality TV as a culturally bound, discursive construct functions as a meta-genre with concrete implications for selection, experience and possible ...

The general public, parents, teachers, and social scientists have long been concerned with the effects of children's radio programs. In the study reported here, the author investigated children's identification with radio characters and their acceptance of values espoused by those characters. He found that success was the most important element in determining whether the personality would be accepted or rejected.

This study examines how a specific digital space—the Reddit message board dedicated to a discussion of the murder case featured on the podcast Serial—affords its users the ability to transcend the spatiotemporal limitations of traditional journalistic and criminal justice practices in the collection, validation, and deliberation of evidence. The digital discourse on the Serial subReddit can be understood, using concepts derived from network society theory (Castells, 2005) as a form of deliberative ...

Juan Piñón,

The Latin American telenovela genre has enjoyed a long-lasting hegemonic position in prime-time television across the region, and particularly within US Spanish-language television market. However, in the last several years, Spanish-language national television networks, as well as their prime-time telenovela product, are being challenged by the new digital and mobile media landscape. Television networks have deployed a variety of strategies to better accommodate to new audiences’ consumption routines ...

Transnational activism endures as a political practice turning a mirror onto the world's powerbrokers. We analyse a variety of transnational activism best characterized as serial by virtue of an observed systematic time and border-spanning commitment to protest communication. Following statistical disambiguation of a dataset of 2.5 million unique Twitter users, we identified a subset of exceptionally prolific communicators and interviewed 21 of them. We show that a noted prominence in networked ...

Susan Ossman,

Moving Matters is a richly nuanced portrait of the serial migrant: a person who has lived in several countries, calling each one at some point home. The stories told here are both extraordinary and increasingly common. Serial migrants rarely travel freely-they must negotiate a world of territorial borders and legal restrictions-yet as they move from one country to another, they can use border-crossings as moments of self-clarification. They often become masters of settlement as they turn each country ...

Glen Creeber,

This article argues against the generally agreed assumption that the demise of the single play heralded the decline in the standards of television drama generally. In contrast, it suggests that the rise of the television serial actually indicates the coming of age of TV drama. Unlike the `teleplay' that originally arose out of a strong theatrical tradition, the serial or `mini-series' better utilizes the generic aesthetics of television and the fundamental dynamics of its audience's viewing habits. ...

George A. Willey,

Today we are highly aware of the transitory nature of broadcast programming. One season features comedy, another adventure‐drama. On radio, even the currently pervading popular music recordings were far less common thirty‐five to forty years ago. One of the longest “runs” that any program type ever had was that of the domestic daytime serial, better known as the “soap opera.” Although the radio soap opera is dead, this article is not a eulogy, but a history; the story of the rise and fall of an institution ...

Purpose This study aims to examine the relevant but overlooked intervening role of knowledge sharing and innovation capability between digital leadership and open innovation. This study hypothesizes that top management knowledge value (TMKV) can strengthen the relationship between digital leadership and knowledge sharing. In line with the resource- and knowledge-based views, the serial mediation model explains how organizations can achieve open innovation through knowledge sharing and innovation ...

The first season of Serial, to date the most popular podcast in the medium's decade-long history, told the story of the conviction of 18-year-old Adnan Syed in 2000 for the murder of his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee. At the center of Serial, producer Sarah Koenig presented Syed's voice, his take on the prosecution's evidence, and his own contemporaneous experience. This essay examines the way Serial used Syed's voice to challenge institutional truth claims from within the textual space of crime journalism. " ...

This article considers the 2014 podcast Serial within a context of technical change and podcast histories. Building on previous work, the author argues that Serial is a significant moment in the history of podcasting. Recent trends have shifted podcasts from iPods to networked screen-based mobile devices in smartphones and connected dashboards, locations where global brands enjoy a significant advantage. It is in this context that the author places Serial as cultural object.
