Oxygen is used commonly and can save lives by preventing severe hypoxaemia.1 However, serious harm is possible if oxygen is not managed properly and the risks are poorly understood by trainee doctors and others.2 Underuse of oxygen can cause hypoxic organ damage, whereas overuse may harm neonates or cause hypercapnic respiratory failure in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. From December 2004 to June 2009, healthcare staff reported 281 serious incidents relating to oxygen use to ...

An atypically early major stratospheric sudden warming in mid‐Dec 1998 resulted in an abnormally warm and weak polar vortex through most of the 1998–99 winter. The first major warming in nearly 8 years, it was only the second major warming observed before the end of Dec, and strongly resembled the previous Dec 1987 major warming in several characteristics atypical of major warmings later in winter. 3D mechanistic model simulations reproduced most characteristics of the Dec 1998 major warming, including ...

Chris Rudd, Scott Joseph Connew,
AbstractFollowing the 2005 election, a number of minor parties claimed that their poor performance on election night was due in part to the coverage their campaigns had received in the media. This article examines the validity of these claims through an analysis of the extent and type of coverage received by ACT, United Future, New Zealand First and the Greens in the four metropolitan newspapers. The article concludes that newspapers follow a particular media logic when covering election campaigns. ...
