Leucocyte adhesion molecules are involved in the leucocyte-endothelial interaction and in the activation of coagulation and binding of complement and endotoxin. Thus, they are important in inflammation, systemic acute phase reaction, ischaemia reperfusion injury and resistance against infections. The expression of the adhesion molecules CD11b, CD11c and CD62L on leucocytes and changes in plasma products of neutrophil activation (myeloperoxidase, lactoferrin) and complement activation (C3bc, SC5b-9 ( ...

An in vitro model cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) circuit consisting ot tubing, oxygenator and venous reservoirs with either a roller or a centrifugal pump, and with either heparin-coated (Carmeda Bioactive Surface, CBAS) or uncoated surfaces, was studied with respect to 'blood activation', using small- scale-based blood volume (450 + 500 ml). Sixteen circuits were tested in each pump group, eight with and eight without heparin-coated surfaces, by circulating heparinized fresh human blood for 72 hours at ...

Centrifugal pumps are being used increasingly for short-term extracorporeal circulation purposes such as during heart operations. Whether the centrifugal pump improves the cardiopulmonary bypass biocompatibility has not been fully documented.A roller pump (n = 20) was compared in vivo with a centrifugal pump (n = 20) in groups of patients in which cardiopulmonary bypass circuits that were either totally heparin coated (Carmeda BioActive Surface; n = 20) or uncoated (n = 20) were used. We expected the heparin ...

Several studies have indicated reduced "blood activation" in heparin-coated cardiopulmonary bypass systems. The present study compares the effect of two different heparin coatings on different blood activation indices.Low-risk patients (n = 40) were randomized to coronary artery bypass grafting using cardiopulmonary bypass with surfaces coated entirely by either the Duraflo II heparin coat or the Carmeda Biological Active Surface, or with identical uncoated equipment. In all cases, a standard systemic ...

A Biomedicus centrifugal pump and a Polystan roller pump were compared in vitro with regard to differences in haemolysis, granulocyte and complement activation. Six circuits of tubing and oxygenators were connected to each pump. Heparinized fresh human blood was circulated for 72 hours in the systems. Blood samples were drawn at defined intervals. Haemolysis was assessed by determination of lactate dehydrogenase (LD) and potassium, and granulocyte activation by quantification of the granulocyte proteins ...

Summary: Four different organic nitroesters, constituting a homologous series based on unbranched polyalcohols, were compared with regard to in vitro relaxation of isolated bovine mesenteric arteries contracted with 2.5 μM phenylephrine. The organic nitroesters included ethylene glycol dinitrate (EGDN), dinitratopropane (DPN), glyceryl trinitrate (GTN), and tetranitratobutane. Glyceryl trinitrate exhibited a biphasic concentration-effect relationship, with pD2 values of 11.5 ±; 0.5 and 7.2 ±; 0.2 for the ...

Abstract The hypothesis that intuition promotes cooperation has attracted considerable attention. Although key results in this literature have failed to replicate in pre-registered studies, recent meta-analyses report an overall effect of intuition on cooperation. We address the question with a meta-analysis of 82 cooperation experiments, spanning four different types of intuition manipulations—time pressure, cognitive load, depletion, and induction—including 29,315 participants in total. We obtain ...

T. brucei brucei released a lymphocyte triggering factor (TLTF), which triggered purified CD8+, but not CD4+, T cells to interferon gamma (IFN-gamma) mRNA expression and secretion and to [3H]thymidine incorporation. TLTF also induced mRNA for transforming growth factor beta, but not for interleukin-4. The action of this TLTF on mononuclear cell (MNC) cultures was blocked by anti-CD8 antibodies and by soluble CD8. MNCs from a mutant mouse strain lacking CD8 expression were not triggered by TLTF. IFN- ...

Abstract Background Subspecialisation within general surgery has today reached further than ever. However, on-call time, an unchanged need for broad surgical skills are required to meet the demands of acute surgical disease and trauma. The introduction of a new subspecialty in North America that deals solely with acute care surgery and trauma is an attempt to offer properly trained surgeons also during on-call time. To find out whether such a subspecialty could be helpful in Sweden we analyzed our ...

Ticks are transmitting a wide range of bacterial pathogens that cause substantial morbidity and mortality in domestic animals. The full pathogen burden transmitted by tick vectors is incompletely studied in many geographical areas, and extensive studies are required to fully understand the diversity and distribution of pathogens transmitted by ticks. We sampled 824 ticks of 11 species collected in 19 counties in Romania. Ticks were collected mainly from dogs, but also from other domestic and wild ...

Tick-borne diseases are of substantial concern worldwide for animals as well as humans. Dogs have been a human companion for millennia, and their significant impact on human life renders disease in dogs to be of great concern. Tick-borne diseases in dogs represent a substantial diagnostic challenge for veterinarians in that clinical signs are often diffuse and overlapping. In addition, co-infections with two or more pathogens enhance this problem further. Molecular methods are useful to disentangle ...

In the present study the accumulation potentials in earthworms (Eisenia fetida) of selected brominated flame retardants (BFRs) were investigated. The tested BFRs, including polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), hexabromobenzene (HBB), and 1,2-dibromo-4-(1,2-dibromoethyl)cyclohexane (TBECH), were found to be bioavailable to Eisenia fetida, and they accumulated in the earthworms. To our knowledge, this is the first published study to address the bioaccumulation potential of TBECH in terrestrial biota. ...

Rats were treated with mevinolin by intraperitoneal injection (15 days) or dietary administration (30 days). The cholesterol, dolichol, dolichyl phosphate and ubiquinone contents of the liver, brain, heart, muscle and blood were then investigated. The cholesterol contents of these organs did not change significantly, with the exception of muscle. Intraperitoneal administration of the drug increases the amount of dolichol in liver, muscle and blood and decreases the dolichyl-P amount in muscle. The ...

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectra excited in the immediate vicinity of the core-level ionization thresholds of ${\mathrm{N}}_{2}$ have been recorded. Final states of well-resolved symmetry-selected Rydberg series converging to valence-level ionization thresholds with vibrational excitations are observed. Abstract The rate of caesarean section delivery (CSD) is increasing worldwide. It remains unclear whether disruption of mother-to-neonate transmission of microbiota through CSD occurs and whether it affects human physiology. Here we perform metagenomic analysis of earliest gut microbial community structures and functions. We identify differences in encoded functions between microbiomes of vaginally delivered (VD) and CSD neonates. Several functional pathways are over-represented in VD neonates, including ...

Babesiosis is a severe disease in cattle worldwide. In Europe, the main causative agent of bovine babesiosis is Babesia divergens. In some areas, this species is reported to have declined or even disappeared, and its etiological role overtaken by other piroplasmid species. Moreover, co-infection with other tick-transmitted pathogens can be expected to complicate diagnosis in cattle. Hence, molecular identification of the causative agent of babesiosis should be a priority. Therefore, samples from ...
