Understanding the influences of ferrihydrite conversion and co-existing substances on the migration of Cr(VI) in the co-precipitates of ferrihydrite and Cr(VI) (Fh–Cr) is helpful in predicting the migration path of Cr(VI). This work studied the influence of phytic acid on the immobilization of Cr(VI) in ferrihydrite and the migration of Cr(VI) in the presence of phytic acid and Mn(II). The results revealed that phytic acid hindered the retention of Cr(VI) in ferrihydrite and the conversion of ferrihydrite ...

Abstract George VI Sound is an ~600 km‐long curvilinear channel on the west coast of the southern Antarctic Peninsula separating Alexander Island from Palmer Land. The Sound is a geologically complex region presently covered by the George VI Ice Shelf. Here we model the bathymetry using aerogravity data. Our model is constrained by water depths from seismic measurements. We present a crustal density model for the region, propose a relocation for a major fault in the Sound, and reveal a dense body, ~ ...

This research deals with the removal of Cr(VI), one of the most toxic heavy metal in biological systems, from wastewater by using activated carbon produced via pyrolysis and chemical activation of "Posidonia oceanica". That is the most important and well-studied seagrass species of the Mediterranean Sea. The as produced activated carbon exhibited high specific surface area up to 1563 m2/g and a cumulative pore volume of 0.74 cm3/g, allocated to 74% micro-pores and 26% to meso-macro- pores. The adsorption ...

Type VI collagen cDNAs of human and avian origin were recently obtained and characterized by screening cDNA libraries in k phage. Based on the published sequences of these cDNAs, we constructed partially degenerate oligonucleotide primers that we used in polymerase chain reactions for the generation of α2(VI) collagen clones of murine origin. As template, we used cDNA derived from murine total RNA. We amplified, cloned and sequenced a 1043-bp fragment that contains the coding sequence for the entire ...

The u.v. and carbonyl i.r. absorptions for some 3-thiacycloalkanones, and the equilibrium constants for association complexes which they form with p-chlorophenol as measured by n.m.r. spectroscopy, suggest excited and groundstate interactions between sulphur and the carbonyl group. The data indicate that these interactions are different from those of the transannular type, described previously for 5-thiacyclo-octanone, and now shown to occur also in cyclohex-3-enone, but similar to those in the ...

Vaccination with purified capsular polysaccharide Vi Ag from Salmonella typhi can protect against typhoid fever, although the mechanism for its efficacy is not clearly established. In this study, we have characterized the B cell response to this vaccine in wild-type and T cell-deficient mice. We show that immunization with typhoid Vi polysaccharide vaccine rapidly induces proliferation in B1b peritoneal cells, but not in B1a cells or marginal zone B cells. This induction of B1b proliferation is ...

In this study, a new and efficient analytical method was developed to determine hexavalent chromium, Cr (VI), in water by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). This method consists on the simultaneous selective extraction and preconcentration of Cr (VI) in water by dispersive solid phase extraction (DSPE), using Zn-Al layered double hydroxide intercalated with l-Alanine (ZnAl-ALA-LDH) as adsorbent. Experimental parameters that influence Cr (IV) determination efficiency, such as pH, time and interfering ...
