Epidemiological studies are necessary to explore the effect of current pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) against antibiotic resistance, including the rise of non-vaccine serotypes that are resistant to antibiotics. Hence, epidemiological changes in the antimicrobial pattern of Streptococcus pneumoniae before and during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic were studied. In this national surveillance study, we characterised the antimicrobial susceptibility to a panel of antibiotics in 3017 pneumococcal ...

Iron deficiency (ID), anemia, iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and excess iron (hemoconcentration) harm maternal-fetal health. We evaluated the effectiveness of different doses of iron supplementation adjusted for the initial levels of hemoglobin (Hb) on maternal iron status and described some associated prenatal determinants. The ECLIPSES study included 791 women, randomized into two groups: Stratum 1 (Hb = 110-130g/L, received 40 or 80mg iron daily) and Stratum 2 (Hb > 130g/L, received 20 or 40mg iron daily). ...

Bacterial flagellin has recently been identified as a ligand for Toll-like receptor 5 (TLR5). Human sites known to specifically express TLR5 include macrophages and gastric and intestinal epithelium. Because infection of intestinal epithelial cells with Salmonella leads to an active transport of flagellin to the subepithelial compartment in proximity to microvessels, we hypothesized that human intestinal endothelial cells functionally express TLR5, thus enabling an active inflammatory response upon ...

Background Specific antibodies are likely to be present before S. pneumoniae infection. We explored cefditoren (CDN) total and free values of serum concentrations exceeding the MIC (t>MIC) related to efficacy in a mice sepsis model, and the effect of specific gammaglobulins on in-vitro phagocytosis and in-vivo efficacy. Methodology/Principal Findings We used three pneumococcal isolates (serotype, MIC of CDN): Strain 1 (6B, 1 µg/ml), Strain 2 (19F, 2 µg/ml) and Strain 3 (23F, 4 µg/ml). Hyperimmune serum ( ...

The in vitro activity of penicillin, ampicillin, cefditoren, cefotaxime, erythromycin, clarithromycin, and levofloxacin against 763 clinical isolates of Streptococcus pyogenes was determined. Clinically significant isolates collected from November 2005 to December 2006 in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania (the latter 3 analyzed as Baltic countries) were studied. No resistance to β-lactams and levofloxacin was found. The rate of erythromycin resistance ...

Among 165 Spanish Haemophilus influenzae isolates with mutations in the ftsI gene (ftsI(+)) (2005 to 2007), 73% were beta-lactamase negative and 26.7% were positive. The proportion of beta-lactamase-negative isolates to beta-lactamase-positive isolates was 2:1 to 4:1 in general, versus 1:3 in pediatric hospitals. Among 44 beta-lactamase-positive strains, 8 strains produced ROB-1 (5 from the pediatric hospital). beta-Lactamase-positive ftsI(+) strains were phylogenetically closer than were beta-lactamase- ...

Sir, Cefditoren pivoxil is an aminothiazolyl oral cephalosporin with a broad spectrum of activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens and is stable to hydrolysis by many common b-lactamases. It has been shown to be active in vitro against many respiratory tract pathogens including Haemophilus influenzae and Moraxella catarrhalis. Resistance of both organisms to b-lactam antibiotics is generally conferred by either the presence of b-lactamase or as a result of alterations in penicillinbinding ...

In vitro cefditoren antimicrobial activity was tested against 288 Streptococcus pneumoniae and 220 Haemophilus influenzae clinical strains isolated in our hospital from January 2005 to May 2006 by agar dilution and broth microdilution method, respectively. MICs were also determined for 13 and 10 comparison drugs, respectively. The pneumococci tested comprised 113 (39.2%) penicillin susceptible, 91 (31.6%) penicillin intermediate, and 84 (29.2%) penicillin resistant. Cefditoren was the most active drug ...

Cefditoren exhibited MIC90 values one dilution lower than those of ...

Nineteen β-lactamase–negative ampicillin-resistant (BLNAR) and 2 β-lactamase–positive amoxicillin-clavulanic acid–resistant Canadian Haemophilus influenzae strains were characterized. All 21 isolates were found to have the N526K mutations in their ftsI genes, and their ampicillin MIC50 values were 4–8 times that of β-lactamase–negative ampicillin-susceptible strains. The difficulty in detection of BLNAR strains was discussed.
