The result of a 1995 conference in Fiesole, I religiosi a corte presents new investigations and large summaries of the religious clergy’s involvement in court politics, broadly construed, between 1500 and 1750. It contains four articles in Spanish and five in Italian, including a sizeable introduction. Its authors describe the fortunes of individual religious clerics or whole religious orders in state-building milieus; or they report the ways in which the state-builders themselves valued monastic ...

A series of activist efforts across Europe have been organizing under the umbrella concept of precarity, with a long trajectory of movements facing flexibilization policies, austerity programs and migratory restrictions. The rise of precarity activism in Spain has worked at the intersections of increasing vulnerability and mobility producing a prolific body of activist literature and rich repertoire of strategies. This paper explores how alternative concepts of citizenship have developed within ...

This paper evaluates the development of online dispute resolution (ODR) methods in resolving small value disputes arising out of e-commerce transactions and the need for designing a regulatory model to realise its full potential in the EU. The paper proposes the drafting of a European Regulation in the field of ODR that would set legal standards for mandatory ODR. The proposed Regulation would create a pan-European trustmark that would be granted to those ODR providers that comply with its legal ...

In this paper we present the argument-based model proCLAIM, intended to provide a setting for heterogeneous agents to deliberate over safety critical actions. To achieve this purpose proCLAIM features a Mediator Agent with three main tasks: (1) guiding the participating agents in what their valid dialectical moves are at each stage of the dialogue; (2) deciding whether submitted arguments should be accepted on the basis of their relevance; and finally, (3) evaluating the accepted arguments in order ...

The present study reviews gender-related differences and inequalities in paid work and domestic chores in Spain. The impact of both types of work on health are analyzed and the main policies of the European Union (EU) and Spain to achieve gender equality at work are described. In Spain, fewer women are in paid work than in other EU countries. The labor market displays horizontal segregation (men and women work in different sectors), as well as vertical segregation (men hold more senior positions), ...

The interdisciplinarity constitutes sociology as an academic discipline. This characteristic stimulates the discussion about its theoretical and methodological specificities, the formation of a disciplinary culture and the corporatist debate on what would be its peculiarities as a field of knowledge. The synthetic science, as proposed by Comte, since the start encompassed contributions of other human science and also of the hard sciences. In Brazil, sociology was synonymous of social sciences. Anthropology, ...

Abstract Although mixed public–private provisions of welfare have always been a typical characteristic of continental welfare states, recent international scholarship has pointed to a historically new process of institutional hybridisation, with a more systematic intermingling of rationalities of the state, market and third sector within one and the same organisation. In this article, we address two limitations in the current knowledge: first, the absence of an indicator-model for exploring organisational ...

This paper examines the new legal framework on consumer Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in the EU. Its primary contribution lies in identifying that harmonising the complaint submission in a pan-European Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) platform, and directing parties to nationally approved ADR entities that comply with minimum standards, will not fulfil the potential of an extra-judicial consumer redress system. This paper proposes key functions that the ODR platform should incorporate if it ...

Surprisingly little data is available on Latino nonprofits in the United States. The author describes a new content analysis strategy for extracting Latino subsets from large data sets that lack Hispanic identifiers. The strategy was used to generate statistics on Latino nonprofits from data on tax-exempt organizations compiled by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Findings indicate that Latino nonprofits comprise less than four tenths of 1% of all tax-exempt organizations. A relatively high ...
