BACKGROUND It has been previously shown that food intake elevates circulating ACTH and cortisol levels, but no report has been published regarding the changes in circulating dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). DHEA was originally described as a weak androgen, but more recently it has been associated with a wide range of metabolic functions. In addition, previous studies have described a hyper‐responsive hypothalamo‐pituitary‐adrenal axis in obese subjects in response to various stimuli, but the specific ...

The effect of prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) on serum luteinizing hormone (LH), testosterone (T), prolactin (PRL) and cortisol (CS) was studied in the boar. Indwelling cannulae were placed nonsurgically in the jugular vein of six 8 to 9 month-old boars weighing 130 to 160 kilograms. Twenty-four hr after cannulation, blood samples were collected every 30 min from 0630 to 1830 hours. Immediately after the second blood sample (0700 hr) three boars were injected intramuscularly (IM) with 20 mg PGF2α and three boars ...

Post-mortem brain tissue from 7 patients who died with a diagnosis of senile dementia of Alzheimer type (SDAT) was compared with tissue obtained from 7 control patients at routine post mortem. A significant fall in choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) activity was apparent in the cerebral cortex of the SDAT cases which was maximal in the temporal lobe. The fall in ChAT activity was not accompanied by changes in cortical vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) measured by radioimmunoassay.
