The WestRock mill in Covington, VA, USA, initiated a long term diagnostic and optimization program for all three of its bleaching lines. Benchmarking studies were used to help identify optimization opportunities. Capital expenditures for mixing improvement, filtrate changes, equipment repair, other equipment changes, and species changes were outside the scope of this work. This focus of this paper is the B line, producing southern hardwood pulp in a D(EP)DD sequence at 88% GE brightness. The benchmarking ...

Prenatal cocaine exposure has been associated with behavior problems at school age. However, the correspondence between use of cocaine and alcohol during pregnancy is often high, making appropriate allocation of variance and control for other exposures and their interactions difficult. Additionally, gender-specific effects are not typically reported. The purpose of the current study was to determine the degree to which gender-specific effects of prenatal cocaine exposure on teacher-reported child ...

Abstract Copolymers with alternating dioxysilphenylene and diorganosilane units were investigated as a source of high‐temperature elastomers for the aerospace industry. A copolymer with dimethylsilane units alternating with dioxysilphenylene had a glass transition temperature of −63°C and exceptional thermal stability; a polymer with diphenylsilane units alternating with dioxysilphenylene had a glass transition temperature of 0°C and slightly higher thermal stability. Both were cured to elastomers ...

The advent of the Human Genome Project has allowed for increased understanding and sophistication in diagnosis, treatment methods, and overall care planning on the part of healthcare providers for children with genetic disorders. Genetics research dealing with polymorphic changes within a genome has opened the door to awareness of how dormant genetic alleles may become active when coupled with certain environmental insults. Such genetic aberrations may place a child at a higher risk for health disparities ...

Social decision making is guided by the ability to intuitively judge personal attributes, including analysis of facial features to infer the trustworthiness of others. Although the neural basis for trustworthiness evaluation is well characterized in adults, less is known about its development during adolescence. We used event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging to examine age-related changes in neural activation and functional connectivity during the evaluation of trust in faces in a sample ...

Adolescence is hypothesized to be a critical period for the maturation of self-regulatory capacities, including those that depend on interoceptive sensitivity, but the neural basis of interoceptive regulation in adolescence is unknown. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging and psychophysiology to study interoceptive regulation in healthy adolescent females. Teachers report that children exposed prenatally to cocaine display unique academic, social, and conduct problems in the school setting. No measure nor data exist that specifically identify these alleged behaviors. Experienced teachers (N = 24) participated in a consensus process to identify first-grade student behaviors considered specific to prenatal cocaine exposure. The Problem Behavior Scale (PROBS-14), a 14-item, visual analogue scale, was developed from the beliavior classifications generated ...

Community violence exposure (CVE), a critical urban problem, is associated with negative academic outcomes. Children who report feeling safe, however, may perform better than those who do not. The purpose of this study was to examine the relations among CVE, feelings of safety, and cognitive outcomes among 6- and 7-year-olds born to women receiving prenatal care at an inner-city maternity hospital who participated in a prospective pregnancy study. In addition to obtaining measures of child CVE, IQ, ...

Reductions in birth weight and length have been independently attributed to prenatal exposure to alcohol, cigarettes and cocaine. While pregnant women often use multiple substances, studies have not consistently controlled for exposure to other agents or other important differences in maternal lifestyle associated with the use of these substances. Despite these difficulties, the preponderance of evidence suggests that prenatal alcohol and cocaine independently reduce birth measurements. This review ...

Exposure to violence in childhood has been associated with lower school grades. Abstract This study examined the relationship between maternal expressed emotion (EE) and children's perceived self‐competence, behavior and intelligence in a community sample of 190 urban, African American children ages 6–7. Maternal EE was measured by the Five Minute Speech Sample. Self reports and standardized measures were used to examine other mother and child variables. Compared with Low EE, High EE was associated with children's decreased cognitive self‐concept, increased anxiety, and greater ...

Objective. The aim of this study was to evaluate the hypothesis that prenatal cocaine exposure would negatively affect newborn behavior. Methods. A prospective observational study of term infants recruited from the low-risk nursery used a structured, standardized interview to obtain maternal data. Cocaine exposure was determined by radioimmunoassay of the infant's meconium stool. An examiner blinded to the infant's cocaine status administered the Brazelton Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scales. ...

Animal but few human studies have demonstrated gender-influenced differences in outcome related to prenatal cocaine exposure. Pregnant participants in a prospective pregnancy study were interviewed for drug use. Exposure was considered positive if history or laboratory tests were positive. An ordinal measure of exposure was also constructed. Six years later, the child and primary caretaker were tested to assess drug use in the home since birth and teacher-assessed child behavior. Data were complete ...

Objective. Prenatal cocaine exposure has been associated with alterations in neonatal behavior and more recently a dose–response relationship has been identified. However, few data are available to address the long-term behavioral effects of prenatal exposures in humans. The specific aim of this report is to evaluate the school-age behavior of children prenatally exposed to cocaine. Methods. All black non–human immunodeficiency virus–positive participants in a larger pregnancy outcomes study who ...
