Background— The neuronal isoform of nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) has been implicated in the regulation of basal and β-adrenergic inotropy in normal and chronically infarcted hearts. Furthermore, myocardial nNOS expression and activity increase in failing hearts, raising the possibility that nNOS may influence left ventricular (LV) remodeling progression and functional deterioration after myocardial infarction (MI) Methods and Results— We compared LV remodeling at 1, 4, and 8 weeks after MI in nNOS - ...

We report a case in which medicinal leeches (Hirudo medicinalis) were used to rescue a traumatic nasal flap from venous congestion and loss. A healthy 18-year-old had a bicycling accident and, in addition to other facial injuries, presented with a complex full thickness nasal laceration. After he had been resuscitated and the flap sutured, he was treated with two leeches four times a day for 48 h. His recovery was satisfactory and uncomplicated. Bioorthogonal chemistry has become one of the main driving forces in current chemical biology, inspiring the search for novel biocompatible chemospecific reactions for the past decade. Alongside the well-established labeling strategies that originated the bioorthogonal paradigm, we have recently proposed the use of heterogeneous palladium chemistry and bioorthogonal Pd(0)-labile prodrugs to develop spatially targeted therapies. Herein, we report the generation of biologically inert precursors of ...

The first synthetic efforts toward marineosins A and B, novel spiroaminals from a Streptomyces actinomycete, are described by evaluation of the proposed biosynthesis. The hypothesized biosynthetic C1−C25 Diels−Alder substrate was prepared in 8 steps in 5.1% overall yield; however, the proposed biomimetic inverse-electron-demand hetero-Diels−Alder reaction failed to deliver the marineosin core. Molecular mechanics supports this observation.

Critics point to four issues as presenting barriers to the use of virtue in the context of business. They focus on the relationship between management and practice, the potential for virtuous behaviour in a competitive environment, the ability to develop a reflexive critique of management that can be acted on, and the differentiation between work and wider social roles and people's propensity to take responsibility for them. Thirty patients with strabismus were seen face to face by an ophthalmologist and an orthoptist. The patients were then presented by the same orthoptist to a second ophthalmologist via a telemedicine link. Twenty-six patients were seen using a bandwidth of 384 kbit/s and four using 128 kbit/s. There was agreement between the two ophthalmologists about diagnosis and management in 24 cases, partial agreement in one and no agreement in five (17%). Manifest strabismus was safely diagnosed and managed ...

Total lipids were extracted from cells of Candida utilis grown in batch, chemostat, and phased culture. Thin-layer chromatography of the extracts showed qualitative changes in the different lipid classes with growth. Gas–liquid chromatography was used to follow quantitative changes in the fatty acid constituents. Changes were found to be analogous to those previously reported for the amino acid pool, i.e., characteristic of the medium, of growth rate, and of the environment. The significance of ...
