The efficacy of self-adhesive electrode pads for defibrillation and cardioversion was assessed in 80 patients who received 267 shocks from self-adhesive pads. In all but two patients, defibrillation or cardioversion was achieved at least once. The pads were equally effective when used in the apex-anterior or apex-posterior position. The transthoracic impedance using self-adhesive pads was 75 ± 21 ohms (mean ± standard deviation), which is similar to previously reported transthoracic impedance in defibrillation, ...

Abstract Background Worldwide, approximately two billion people are chronically infected with Toxoplasma gondii with largely unknown consequences. Methods To better understand long-term effects and pathogenesis of this common, persistent brain infection, mice were infected at a time in human years equivalent to early to mid adulthood and studied 5–12 months later. Appearance, behavior, neurologic function and brain MRIs were studied. Additional analyses of pathogenesis included: correlation of brain ...

ABSTRACT: This study assessed attitudes, knowledge and behavior related to respiratory health among 198 swine confinement operators, half of whom were assigned to an educational intervention and half of whom served as controls. The project identified significant gaps in knowledge regarding the swine confinement environment and the hazards posed by working in such an environment. Attitudes toward improving the environment were generally favorable, though barriers such as cost and time existed for ...

Using both automated nanospray and online liquid chromatography mass spectrometry LC-MS strategies, 99 proteins have been newly identified by top-down tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) in Methanosarcina acetivorans, the methanogen with the largest known genome [5.7 mega base pairs (Mb)] for an Archaeon. Because top-down MS/MS was used, 15 proteins were detected with mispredicted start sites along with an additional five from small open reading frames (SORFs). Beyond characterization of these more common ...

A sequential reaction methodology is employed for the complete derivatization of protein thiols, amines, and acids in high purity under denaturing conditions. Following standard thiol alkylation, protein amines are modified via reductive methylation with formaldehyde and pyridine-borane. Protein acids are subsequently amidated under buffered conditions in DMSO using the coupling reagent (7-azabenzotriazol-1-yloxy)tripyrrolidinophosphonium hexafluorophosphate. The generality of the approach is demonstrated ...

In many cases the consumers of mental health information and support are the families of mental health sufferers. The aim of the project was to understand resilience in people who live with or support a family member with a diagnosed or undiagnosed mental illness. Participants were 15 carers (one male, 14 female). Semi-structured interviews were transcribed and analysed using content analysis. Eight recurring themes emerged which indicated the challenges the carers faced and provided indications ...

Rodent paternal models provide unique opportunities to investigate the emergence of affiliative social behavior in mammals. Using biparental and uniparental <i>Peromyscus </i>species (<i>californicus</i> and <i>maniculatus</i>, respectively) we assessed paternal responsiveness by exposing males to biological offspring, unrelated conspecific pups, or familiar brothers following a 24-hour separation. The putative paternal circuit we investigated included brain areas involved in fear/ ...

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of inspiratory muscle training (IMT) on exercise in hypoxia (H) and normoxia (N). A 4-week IMT program was implemented with 12 healthy subjects using an inspiratory muscle trainer set at either 15% (C; n = 5) or 50% (IMT; n = 7) maximal inspiratory mouth pressure (PImax). Two treadmill tests (85% V˙O2max) to exhaustion and measures of diaphragm thickness (Tdi) and function were completed before and after training in H and N. Significant increases of 8–12% ...

Competition is a ubiquitous structuring force across systems, but different fields emphasize the role of different types of competition. In benthic marine environments, where some of the classic examples of competition were described, there is a strong emphasis on interference competition: marine invertebrates are assumed to compete fiercely for the limiting resource of space. Much of our understanding of the dynamics of this system is based on this assumption, yet empirical studies often find that ...

Abstract Objective. To determine if complexes containing monoclonal antibodies to CR1 cross‐linked with antigen (antigen‐based heteropolymers [AHP]) can bind the corresponding autoantibody to primate erythrocyte CR1 and promote autoantibody clearance from the circulation. Methods. AHP were constructed by cross‐linking double‐stranded DNA (dsDNA) to monoclonal antibodies to CR1. The ability of AHP to facilitate binding of human anti‐dsDNA antibodies to primate erythrocytes was studied in vitro using ...
