jazz, his is not very interesting. He is a capable but rather anonymous sounding player with an undistinguished sound on the tenor, occasional intonation problems on the soprano, and a determinedly low-keyed approach.... and at present the saxophonist is the best-selling artist on Taylor's CTI label. --New York Times, February 13, 1977 Despite the fact that it commands a large portion of the jazz marketplace, smooth jazz has become the elephant in the room in jazz studies--its absence from contemporary ...

Marta Elliott, R. David Hayward,

This study of religion and well-being questions whether adherents of a religion without a specific creed may still derive well-being from their religious experience as do members of more orthodox religious institutions. Survey data from a Unitarian Universalist congregation were analyzed to test whether the relationship between religion and individual well-being in a non-Christian, non-creedal religious institution is similar to that observed in mainstream Christian denominations. Hierarchical linear ...

Hans G. Despain,

This paper interprets Karl Polanyi through dialectical critical realism. The paper maintains that this interpretation offers Polanyi methodological coherence and philosophical support. It further provides dialectical critical realism with an exemplar of explanatory critique. It is argued that the social theory of Polanyi aims at the demystification of market-systems as they are theoretically constructed by both orthodox and heterodox accounts of capitalism. Dialectical critical realism is best capable ...

Bioturbation can affect community structure by influencing resource distribution and habitat heterogeneity. Bioturbation by detritivores in small headwater streams could affect community structure by reintroducing buried detrital resources into the food web and could also affect the distribution of various taxa on detritus. We evaluated the ability of the caddisfly Pycnopsyche gentilis to uncover experimentally buried leaves in a headwater stream. Packs of leaves were placed in enclosures and covered ...

W. E. Douglas Creed, Steven S. Taylor, Bryant A. Hudson,

The cognitive turn in institutional theory has led to the systematic neglect of people’s sensory capacities. In this paper we offer a cross-level theory of the role in institutional processes of sensory and evaluative forms of knowledge. Called here the aesthetic mode, this way of knowing combines humans’ innate sensory capacity to engage the world with their learned capacity to evaluate what they encounter. We argue that people evaluate the world’s natural, social, and spiritual phenomena through ...

Emil Lundedal Hammar,

In this article, I argue that digital games hold the potential to influence processes of cultural memory related to past and contemporary forms of marginalization. By bringing cultural memory studies into dialogue with game studies, I account for the ways through which digital games and practices of play might influence historical discourses and memory politics pertaining to marginalized identities. In order to demonstrate this, I conduct an analysis of Assassin's Creed: Freedom Cry, a digital game ...

Robyn Hallim,

Had scientific rationality replaced spiritual explanations of the purpose of human existence? And could morality be based on humanism rather than religious principles? These were issues that people in Britain confronted in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Critical work on how this emerging scientific world view is reflected in the canonical literature of the period is plentiful but representations of science in the works of more popular writers—such as Marie Corelli—have rarely ...

Aimee Edmondson, Earnest L. Perry,

This article examines how heal newspapers covered the attempted enrollment and subsequent legal fight that African American journalist Lucile Bluford waged against the University of Missouri, the birthplace of journalism education, in 1939. The case rose in the shadow of the U.S. Supreme Court's better known Lloyd Gaines decision, which was the NAACP's most significant challenge of the separate but equal doctrine arising from Plessy v. Ferguson in 1896. The school's first dean and patriarch, Walter ...

Ayala Zur, Rivka A. Eisikovits,

In this paper, we describe an approach to the study and development of school principals’ school creed. The approach and its underlying method are grounded in the phenomenological tradition, predominantly in the philosophy of Merleau-Ponty. School principals are asked to imagine an ideal school and present it both visually and verbally. We illustrate the potential of this process using one ideal school proposal developed by a high school principal in Israel. The paper concludes with a discussion ...

Peter VonDoepp,

This article seeks to enrich understandings of civil society in Africa by examining the political activities of Catholic and Presbyterian clergy in Malawi. Although local clergy are well placed to promote citizen empowerment and state responsiveness at the grassroots level, research revealed that clergy in Malawi have been disinclined to engage in activism toward these ends. The article argues that this limited activism can be understood by devoting attention to three factors: the religious frameworks ...
