Neuroinflammation is recognized as a major factor in Parkinson's disease (PD) pathogenesis and increasing evidence propose that microglia is the main source of inflammation contributing to the dopaminergic degeneration observed in PD. Several studies suggest that astrocytes could act as physiological regulators preventing excessive microglia responses. However, little is known regarding how astrocytes modulate microglial activation. In the present study, using Zymosan A-stimulated midbrain microglia ...

Abstract Animal models of human diseases are crucial experimental tools to investigate the mechanisms involved in disease pathogenesis and to develop new therapies. In spite of the numerous animal models currently available that reproduce several neuropathological features of Parkinson disease (PD), it is challenging to have one that consistently recapitulates human PD conditions in both motor behaviors and biochemical pathological outcomes. Given that, we have implemented a new paradigm to expose ...

Two xylan-containing lignocellulosic raw materials (rice husks and Eucalyptus globulus wood) were subjected to autohydrolysis under optimised conditions, yielding liquors containing soluble xylan-degradation products and a solid phase enriched in cellulose. Autohydrolysis liquors were acidified with sulfuric acid and heated to yield xylose-containing solutions suitable for the fermentative production of lactic acid, which can be easily converted into polylactic acid (PLA). The solids from autohydrolysis ...

AbstractAbstractThe potential use of sustainable polymer based composites, obtained from renewable resources, is revised in terms of properties and envisaged applications. Using the typical specifications required within the automotive industry as reference, the potential of these composites is evaluated and some alternative routes for property improvement are discussed. Specific examples of the development of biodegradable polymeric composites are presented including the use of different types ...

The influence of starch content and sintering temperature on the preparation of alumina bodies were studied. The process was water-based and cassava starch was used as consolidator, binder and pore former. Colloidal suspensions were prepared with three different starch concentrations and the ideal dispersant content and gel point were determined by rheological analysis. The wet samples were demolded after consolidation in silicone mold at 60 °C for 2 h. After the drying step the samples were sintered ...

Tuberculosis of the Larynx and pharynx only is rare. However, in the last few years, the number of tuberculosis cases in general have had a dramatic increase, thus increasing the possibility of isolated laryngo-pharyngeal lesions. To report a case of isolated laryngo-pharyngeal tuberculosis in a pregnant, immunocompetent host. Case Report: A 30-year-old pregnant female had complained of odynophagia for the last ten months. There were no other respiratory or systemic symptoms. An oro-pharyngeal granulomatous ...

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterised by the preferential loss of dopaminergic neurones from the substantia nigra (SN) that leads to the hallmark motor disturbances. Animal and human studies suggest a beneficial effect of oestrogen to the nigrostriatal system, and the regulation of neurotrophic factor expression by oestrogens has been suggested as a possible mechanism contributing to that neuroprotective effect. The present study was designed to investigate whether the neuroprotection exerted ...

Abstract Cortical or total brain cultures of microglia are commonly used as a model to study the inflammatory processes in Parkinson's disease. Here we characterize microglia cultures from rat ventral midbrain and evaluate their response to zymosan A. We used specific markers of microglia and evaluated the morphology, the phagocytic activity and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels of the cells. During the first 10 days in vitro (DIV), cultures presented predominantly cells with a round morphology, ...

The properties of hydrophilicity or hydrophobicity of materials are defined mainly, though not exclusively, by their composition, morphology and surface energy. In this work, titanium dioxide (TiO2) and aluminum oxide-alumina (Al2O3) ceramics prepared by uniaxial pressing were studied in terms of surface energy. The surfaces of these ceramics were treated with nitrogen plasma, using a stainless steel reactor excited by a 13,6 MHz radio frequency operating at 50 W input power and 13 Pa nitrogen pressure. ...

Identifying human leukocyte antigen (HLA) haplotype-homozygous donors for the generation of induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell lines permits the construction of biobanks immunologically compatible with significant numbers of individuals for use in therapy. However, two questions must be addressed to create such a bank: how many cell lines are necessary to match most of the recipient population and how many people should be tested to find these donors? In Japan and the UK, 50 and 100 distinct HLA- ...

The kinetics parameters of orthorhombic mullite (o-mullite) crystallization from a diphasic gel were measured using a non-isothermal differential thermal analysis method. The diphasic gel was obtained from aqueous solutions containing silic acid and aluminum nitrate, in amount to keep the silicon and aluminum molar present in mullite (Si:Al equals 1:3). Urea in the molar ratio Al:urea equal to 1:3 was used as drying control chemical agent. The phase changes were verified using dynamic X-ray diffraction. ...

Our objective was to evaluate the frequency of antinucleosome antibodies (anti-Ncs) in juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus (JSLE) comparing it to that observed for anti-DNA and to correlate the presence of these antibodies with clinical manifestations and disease activity. Anti-Ncs and anti-DNA were detected by ELISA in 74 patients with JSLE and 64 normal controls. Clinical records were reviewed. Disease activity was assessed by SLEDAI score. Anti-Ncs and anti-DNA showed sensitivity of 52.7% and ...

Parkinson's disease (PD) is classically characterized by motor symptoms; however, non-motor symptoms (NMS) are increasingly recognized as relevant in disease-state, given the associated alterations in mood (depression and anxiety) and cognition. Here, particularly in regards to NMS, we aimed to compare the motor, emotional and cognitive behavior of three animal models of PD that trigger dopaminergic (DAergic) degeneration on both brain hemispheres: (i) the 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA, 8 or 6 μg) lesion ...

Rivaroxaban is an oral direct factor Xa inhibitor, therapeutically indicated in the treatment of thromboembolic diseases. As other new oral anticoagulants, routine monitoring of rivaroxaban is not necessary, but important in some clinical circumstances. Our method used a simple sample preparation, protein precipitation, and a fast chromatographic ...

Assim, identificamos ...

The sharp increase of COVID-19 cases in late 2020 has made Brazil the new epicenter of the ongoing SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. The novel viral lineages P.1 (Variant of Concern Gamma) and P.2, respectively identified in the Brazilian states of Amazonas and Rio de Janeiro, have been associated with potentially higher transmission rates and antibody neutralization escape. In this study, we performed the whole-genome sequencing of 185 samples isolated from three out of the five Brazilian regions, including ...
