Solid phase peptide synthesis using the Fmoc/t-Bu strategy (SPPS-Fmoc/tBu) is the most widely used methodology for obtaining synthetic peptides. In this paper, we evaluate the viability of using 4-methylpiperidine as a reagent for deprotection of the amino acid alpha amino group in SPPS-Fmoc/tBu. For this purpose, the peptide (RRWQWRMKKLG) was simultaneously synthesized using 4-methylpiperidine or piperidine for Fmoc removal reagent. The obtained products had similar purities and yields. Finally, ...

Glasses and other non-crystalline solids exhibit thermal and acoustic properties at low temperatures anomalously different from those found in crystalline solids, and with a remarkable degree of universality. Below a few K, these universal properties have been successfully interpreted using the Tunneling Model, which has enjoyed (almost) unanimous recognition for decades. Here we present low-temperature specific-heat measurements of ultrastable glasses of indomethacin that clearly show the disappearance ...

Abstract Aim To determine the association between duration of untreated psychosis ( DUP ) and symptoms remission in a hospitalized first‐episode psychosis cohort. Methods Inpatients with a first‐episode non‐affective psychosis were recruited. Subjects were divided into two groups of long and short DUP using a 3‐month cut‐off point, and this was related to remission at 10 weeks of treatment. Multivariate analyses were performed. Results Fifty‐five inpatients were included. There were no differences in ...

Fibroblast Growth Factor 23 (FGF23) and Klotho play an essential role in the regulation of mineral metabolism, and both are altered as a consequence of renal failure. FGF23 increases to augment phosphaturia, which prevents phosphate accumulation at the early stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD). This effect of FGF23 requires the presence of Klotho in the renal tubules. However, Klotho expression is reduced as soon as renal function is starting to fail to generate a state of FGF23 resistance. Changes ...

Introduction The gut microbiota (GM) dysbiosis is one of the causal factors for the progression of different chronic metabolic diseases, including type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D). Understanding the basis that laid this association may lead to developing new therapeutic strategies for preventing and treating T2D, such as probiotics, prebiotics, and fecal microbiota transplants. It may also help identify potential early detection biomarkers and develop personalized interventions based on an individual’ ...

Little is known about predictors of clinical response to clozapine treatment in treatment-resistant psychosis. Most published cohorts are small, providing inconsistent results. We aimed to identify baseline clinical predictors of future clinical response in patients who initiate clozapine treatment, mainly focusing on the effect of age, duration of illness, baseline clinical symptoms and homelessness. Retrospective cohort of patients with treatment-resistant schizophrenia, aged between 15 and 60 ...

Edible seaweeds are an excellent source of macronutrients, micronutrients, and bioactive compounds, and they can be consumed raw or used as ingredients in food products. However, seaweeds may also bioaccumulate potentially hazardous compounds for human health and animals, namely, heavy metals. Hence, the purpose of this review is to analyze the recent trends of edible seaweeds research: (i) nutritional composition and bioactive compounds, (ii) the use and acceptability of seaweeds in foodstuffs, (iii) ...

The use of agronomic alternatives such as plant hormone sprays has been considered a tool to mitigate drought stress. This research aimed to evaluate the use of foliar brassinosteroid analogue DI-31 (BRs) sprays on plant growth, leaf exchange and chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters, and biochemical variables in lulo (Solanum quitoense L. cv. septentrionale) seedlings grown under drought stress conditions. Seedlings were grown in plastic pots (3 L) using a mix between peat and sand (1:1 v/v) as substrate. ...

Certain ecological traits of bats may be associated with sensitivity to the fragmentation of their habitat, but the relative importance of this is unclear and has been poorly studied in tropical environments. We evaluated the relationship between six ecological traits of phyllostomid bats (body mass, trophic level, vertical foraging area, natural abundance in continuous forest, wing aspect ratio, and relative wing loading) and three measures of sensitivity to habitat fragmentation (species prevalence, ...

Introduction The human gut microbiota (GM) is a dynamic system which ecological interactions among the community members affect the host metabolism. Understanding the principles that rule the bidirectional communication between GM and its host, is one of the most valuable enterprise for uncovering how bacterial ecology influences the clinical variables in the host. In this study, the impact of nanofluid use in solar-thermoelectric generators (Solar-TEG) on thermal performance is investigated through analysis and simulation methodology. We make a comparison between traditional and nanofluid cooling to find the best performance. GNAN at a dispersion of 0.025, 0.05, 0.075, and 0.1-wt% are added to the cooling system. A recent molecular taxonomic study along the Chilean coast (18° S-53° S) described 18 candidate species of bladed Bangiales of which only two were formally described. Few studies focused on local genetic and morphological diversity of bladed Bangiales and attempted to determine their intertidal distribution in contrasting habitats, and none were performed in Chile. To delimit intertidal distributions of genetic species, 66 samples of bladed Bangiales were collected at Maitencillo (32° S) in four zones: ...
