Abstract Ionic liquids (ILs) are ionic compounds that possess a melting temperature below 100 °C. Their physical and chemical properties are attractive for various applications. Several organic materials that are now classified as ionic liquids were described as far back as the mid‐19th century. The search for new and different ILs has led to the progressive development and application of three generations of ILs: 1) The focus of the first generation was mainly on their unique intrinsic physical and ...

Objective: To investigate whether the location and extent of the CT hyperdense artery sign (HAS) at presentation affects response to IV alteplase in the randomized controlled Third International Stroke Trial (IST-3). Methods: All prerandomization and follow-up (24–48 hours) CT brain scans in IST-3 were assessed for HAS presence, location, and extent by masked raters. We assessed whether HAS grew, persisted, shrank, or disappeared at follow-up, the association with 6-month functional outcome, and effect of alteplase. ...

The presence of microplastics and several other pollutants in the marine environment is of growing concern. However, the knowledge on the toxicity of mixtures containing microplastics and other contaminants to marine species is still scarce. The main goals of this study were to investigate the oxidative stress and lipid oxidative damage potentially induced by 96 h of exposure to mercury (0.010 and 0.016 mg/L), microplastics (0.26 and 0.69 mg/L), and mixtures of the two substances (same concentrations, ...

Mercury interaction with selenium in vivo has been recognized for >50 years. Several researchers attempted to use selenium to mitigate the detrimental effects of mercurial compounds but the results were controversial. Selenium pools in living organisms are quite low and the high affinity of mercury to bind selenols pointed out selenoproteins as possible targets of toxicity. Such was the case of the selenoenzyme thioredoxin reductase (TrxR) which is an integrant part of the thioredoxin system. Given ...

Introduction - Impairments in executive functions are common in neurogenetic disorders such as Huntington's disease (HD) and are thought to significantly influence the patient's functional status. Reliable tools with higher ecological validity that can assess and predict the impact of executive dysfunction in daily-life performance are needed. This study aimed to develop and validate a novel non-immersive virtual reality task ("EcoKitchen") created with the purpose of capturing cognitive and functional ...

Deficits in mitochondrial function and redox deregulation have been attributed to Huntington's disease (HD), a genetic neurodegenerative disorder largely affecting the striatum. However, whether these changes occur in early stages of the disease and can be detected in vivo is still unclear. In the present study, we analysed changes in mitochondrial function and production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) at early stages and with disease progression. Studies were performed in vivo in human brain by ...

Despite the speciose fauna of gall-inducing insects in the Neotropical region, little is known about their taxonomy. On the other hand, gall morphotypes associated with host species have been extensively used as a surrogate of the inducer species worldwide. This study reviewed the described gall midges and their galls to test the generalization on the use of gall morphotypes as surrogates of gall midge species in the Brazilian fauna. We compiled taxonomic and biological data for 196 gall midge species ...

In animal cells, arsenite has been reported to cause sulfhydryl depletion, generate reactive oxygen species and increase the level of large ubiquitin–protein conjugates. Plant viability tests and DNA laddering experiments have shown that Lemna minor remains viable after exposure to 50 μM NaAsO 2 for periods of at least 6 h. However, protein metabolism is affected in two major ways: the synthesis of an array of stress proteins, which confer thermotolerance; and an increase in the amount of large ...

Tumour growth at primary or secondary extravasation sites leads to localised regions of reduced oxygen tension (hypoxia) in cells both within and surrounding the tumour. Although the angiogenic response of the tumour cell to hypoxia has been widely examined, the effect of hypoxia on other cell types within the tumour microenvironment is less clear. The endothelium is highly responsive to local hypoxia and regulates tumour cell dissemination and ultimately metastatic success through differential regulation ...

Solid tumors consist of malignant cells and associated stromal components, including fibroblastic cells that contribute to tumor growth and progression. Although tumor fibrosis and aberrant vascularization contribute to the hypoxia often found in advanced tumors, the contribution of hypoxic signaling within tumor-associated fibroblasts to tumorigenesis remains unknown. In this study, we used a fibroblast-specific promoter to create mice in which key hypoxia regulatory genes, including VHL, HIF-1α, ...

The hypoxia inducible transcription factors (HIFs) control many mediators of vascular response, including both angiogenic factors and small molecules such as nitric oxide (NO). In studying how endothelial HIF response itself affects metastasis, we found that loss of HIF-1α in endothelial cells reduces NO synthesis, retards tumor cell migration through endothelial layers, and restricts tumor cell metastasis, and that loss of HIF-2α has in each case the opposite effect. This results from differential ...

Key points Exposure to environmental hypoxia, at high altitude or in a chamber, impairs cardiac energetics and alters mitochondrial function. Inorganic nitrate, a ubiquitous dietary constituent, improves mitochondrial efficiency, lowering the oxygen cost of exercise, whilst elevated circulating nitrogen oxide levels in high‐altitude natives enhances blood flow. Here we report that dietary nitrate supplementation prevents hypoxia‐induced changes in cardiac mitochondrial function and energetics, whilst ...

In mammals, hypoxia-triggered erythropoietin release increases red blood cell mass to meet tissue oxygen demands. Using male Wistar rats, we unmask a previously unrecognized regulatory pathway of erythropoiesis involving suppressor control by the NO metabolite and ubiquitous dietary component nitrate. We find that circulating hemoglobin levels are modulated by nitrate at concentrations achievable by dietary intervention under normoxic and hypoxic conditions; a moderate dose of nitrate administered ...

Insulin sensitivity in skeletal muscle is associated with metabolic flexibility, including a high capacity to increase fatty acid (FA) oxidation in response to increased lipid supply. Lipid overload, however, can result in incomplete FA oxidation and accumulation of potentially harmful intermediates where mitochondrial tricarboxylic acid cycle capacity cannot keep pace with rates of β-oxidation. Enhancement of muscle FA oxidation in combination with mitochondrial biogenesis is therefore emerging ...
