During 1992-1994, 33 malaria cases were reported in two regions in Brazil where few sporadic atypical cases occur, most of them in home owners, who are weekenders, while home caretakers live there permanently. Indirect Fluorescent Antibody Test (IFAT), with Plasmodium vivax, and Enzime Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) with repeat peptides of the circumsporozoite (CS) proteins of the 3 known P. vivax variants and P. malarie/P. brasilianum, were performed on 277 sera, obtained within a 5 to 10 km range ...

The efficiency of public policies includes the measurement of the health resources used and their associated costs. There is a lack of studies evaluating the economic impact of oral cancer (OC). This study aims to estimate the healthcare costs of OC in Brazil from 2008 to 2016. This is a partial economic evaluation using the gross costing top-down method, considering the direct healthcare costs related to outpatients, inpatients, intensive care units, and the number of procedures, from the perspective ...

The purpose of this study is to examine the motivation to transfer training in a multidimensional way. It investigates autonomous and controlled motivation and explores the difference in motivation to transfer according to whether the employee is enrolled in training on a voluntary or mandatory basis. This is a cross‐sectional hypotheses‐testing study. Data were collected at a large insurance company involving employees who had participated in training programs in the previous 6 months. Findings ...

Exceptionally well-preserved three-dimensional insects with fine details and even labile tissues are ubiquitous in the Crato Member Konservat Lagerstätte (northeastern Brazil). Here we investigate the preservational pathways which yielded such specimens. We employed high resolution techniques (EDXRF, SR-SXS, SEM, EDS, micro Raman, and PIXE) to understand their fossilisation on mineralogical and geochemical grounds. Pseudomorphs of framboidal pyrite, the dominant fossil microfabric, display size variation ...

We describe a seroepidemiological survey of malaria prevalence in two areas of low endemicity: Intervales State Park and Alto Ribeira State Tourist Park (PETAR). Both are located in the Vale do Ribeira in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. In this study, 318 subjects from both areas had their blood analyzed for the presence of malaria parasites by thin and thick blood smears. One hundred and sixty-three (51.2%) of the subjects were from Intervales State Park and 155 (48.7%) were from PETAR. We analyzed ...

Prostate cancer mortality projections at the nationwide and regional levels to the year 2025 are carried out in this ecological study that is based on an analysis of Brazilian trends between 1996 and 2010. The predictions were made for the period 2011-2025 utilizing the Nordpred program based on the period of 1996-2010, using the age-period-cohort model. A significant increase was observed in the Brazilian rates between 1996 and 2006, followed by a non-significant decrease. The projections indicate ...

In the past years, the strategies used to break the Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) light to power conversion efficiency world record value were based on improvements of the absorber optoelectronic and crystalline properties, mainly using complex post-deposition treatments. To reach even higher efficiency values, further advances in the solar cell architecture are needed, in particular, with respect to the CIGS interfaces. In this study, we evaluate the structural, morphological and optoelectronic impact of ...

Phosphogypsum (PG) is a by-product of the phosphoric acid fertilizer industries that has possible applications in paving when stabilized with cement or lime. This study's aim is to compare the mechanical performance of the hemi-hydrate (HH) and dihydrate (DH) mixes with tropical soil, lime, and cement. The results of physical, mechanical, and mineralogical tests are presented, which demonstrate that the use of HH in cement and lime mixes reduces the swelling of this material compared to the use of ...

Cancers of the upper aerodigestive tract (UADT) are common forms of malignancy associated with tobacco and alcohol exposures, although human papillomavirus and nutritional deficiency are also important risk factors. While somatically acquired DNA methylation changes have been associated with UADT cancers, what triggers these events and precise epigenetic targets are poorly understood. In this study, we applied quantitative profiling of DNA methylation states in a panel of cancer-associated genes ...

A system of interacting vortices under overdamped motion, which has been commonly used in the literature to model flux-front penetration in disordered type-II superconductors, was recently related to a nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation, characteristic of nonextensive statistical mechanics, through an analysis of its stationary state. Herein, this connection is extended by means of a thorough analysis of the time evolution of this system. Numerical data from molecular-dynamics simulations are presented ...

Several previous results valid for one-dimensional nonlinear Fokker-Planck equations are generalized to N-dimensions. A general nonlinear N-dimensional Fokker-Planck equation is derived directly from a master equation, by considering nonlinearitiesin the transition rates. Using nonlinear Fokker-Planck equations, the H-theorem is proved;for that, an important relation involving these equations and general entropic forms is introduced. It is shown that due to this relation, classes of nonlinear N- ...

We have constructed deformed scalar quantum electrodynamics where the scalar bosons are created and/or annihilated by the step operators of a generalized Heisenberg algebra and the photons are described in a standard way. One parameter, η, was introduced in those terms of the interaction Hamiltonian which have derivatives. The incorporation of nanostructures in optoelectronic devices for enhancing their optical performance is widely studied. However, several problems related to the processing complexity and the low performance of the nanostructures have hindered such actions in real‐life devices. Herein, a novel way of introducing gold nanoparticles in a solar cell structure is proposed in which the nanostructures are encapsulated with a dielectric layer, shielding them from high temperatures and harsh growth processing ...

Machine Learning (ML) has been widely and successfully employed in different fields to estimate information from datasets. However, the necessary time to learn a motor task or to rehabilitate is mainly determined by the professional experience of medical doctor, physiotherapist and so on. Thus, this work introduces a software to measure the performance of subjects on a experiment performing a tracing task, which requires motor learning, and uses ML algorithms on the dataset acquired during this experiment. ...

PURPOSE As cancer surgery restarts after the first COVID-19 wave, health care providers urgently require data to determine where elective surgery is best performed. This study aimed to determine whether COVID-19–free surgical pathways were associated with lower postoperative pulmonary complication rates compared with hospitals with no defined pathway. PATIENTS AND METHODS This international, multicenter cohort study included patients who underwent elective surgery for 10 solid cancer types without ...

Operating on patients with an active perioperative SARS-CoV-2 infection is now known to carry a very high pulmonary complication and mortality rate2. Urgent information is needed to guide whether postponing surgery in patients with a previous SARS-CoV-2 infection leads to ...
