This paper presents results on the characterization of corn starch by X-ray powder diffraction and thermal analysis, as well as processing and characterization of starch–banana/sugarcane bagasse fiber composites. X-ray diffraction studies revealed that the starch sample belongs to the A-type, common in cereals. Thermal analysis showed good thermal stability for making composites, while fractographic studies of 70 wt.% starch and 30% glycerol matrix revealed cracks between smooth and rough surface ...

American trypanosomiasis, also named Chagas disease (CD), is an anthropozoonosis caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi. The disease affects millions of people worldwide, leading yearly to approximately 50,000 deaths. COVID-19, generated by SARS-CoV-2, can lead to lymphopenia and death. We hereby describe the first report of two patients with CD and COVID-19 coinfection, from hospitalization until patients' death.

A reliable method enabling electrical measurements on single nanowires prepared by electrodeposition in an alumina template is described. This technique is based on electrically controlled nanoindentation of a thin insulating resist deposited on the top face of the template filled by the nanowires. We show that this method is very flexible, allowing us to electrically address single nanowires of controlled length down to 100 nm and of desired composition. Using this approach, current densities as ...

After four weeks, the aorto-iliac segment was dissected. Histologic slices where divided in three groups: left CIA in the area of the proximal (group 1) and distal (group 2) implantation site of the stent and the region of angioplasty ...

Continuous efforts are being made in some countries for the recovery of crude glycerin (RG/CG) and castor oil cake (COC), the two byproducts of biodiesel production. These are expected to help, not only in addressing environmental safety, but also in adding value to those byproducts, which otherwise may go to waste. Finding ways to utilize those byproducts underlines the main objective of this study. This paper presents the evaluation of (i) COC, glycerin and banana and sugarcane fibers for moisture ...

Sir, Persistent infection with a characteristic group of human papilloma viruses in epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EV‐HPVs) is due to an uncharacterized immunogenetic deficiency resulting in lack of clearance of the EV‐HPV‐infected keratinocytes.1, 2 Recently two susceptibility loci were identified. The phenomenon of oxidative stress, characterized as an imbalance in the production of reactive oxygen species and antioxidant responses, is a well-known inflammatory mechanism and constitutes an important cellular process. The relationship of viral infections, reactive species production, oxidative stress, and the antiviral response is relevant. Therefore, the aim of this review is to report studies showing how reactive oxygen species may positively or negatively affect the pathophysiology of viral ...

The oncogenic role of high-risk HPV in anogenital, head and neck, and cervical cancer is well recognized, but not in skin cancer in the general population. Some authors have demonstrated their appearance mainly on the hands and feet, particularly in the area of the nail bed, which could be due to contamination with HPV types from anogenital regions. Here, we describe a case of genital HPV associated with SCC on the nose tip in an immunocompetent young man, which was confirmed by histopathological ...

Epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EV) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by development of lesions associated with human papillomavirus in early childhood and malignant transformation in approximately half of individuals during adulthood. The persistence of human papillomavirus infection in EV is thought to be a result of an immunogenetic defect, which determines the generation of several cytokines capable of down-regulating cell-mediated immunity. We sought to study the prevalence of interleukin ...
