The 2.38–4.08 μm wavelength-range of band 1 of ISO-SWS (Short-Wavelength Spectrometers on board of the Infrared Space Observatory) in which many different molecules – with their own dependence on each of the stellar parameters – are absorbing, enables us to estimate the effective temperature, the gravity, the microturbulence, the metallicity, the CNO-abundances, the -ratio and the angular diameter from the ISO-SWS ...

Aims. We selected a large sample of O-B stars that were considered as (candidate) slowly pulsating B, β Cep, and Maia stars after the analysis of their hipparcos data. We analysed our new seven passband geneva data collected for these stars during the first three years of scientific operations of the mercator telescope. We performed a frequency analysis for 28 targets with more than 50 high-quality measurements to improve their variability classification. For the pulsating stars, we tried both to ...

The interstellar medium is enriched primarily by matter ejected from evolved low and intermediate mass stars. The outflows from these stars create a circumstellar envelope in which a rich gas-phase and dust-nucleation chemistry takes place. We observed the nearest carbon-rich evolved star, IRC +10216, using the PACS (55–210 μ m) and SPIRE (194–672 μ m) spectrometers on board Herschel . We find several tens of lines from SiS and SiO, including lines from the v = 1 vibrational level. For SiS these transitions ...

Context. Red supergiant (RSG) stars exhibit significant mass loss by means of a slow, dense wind. They are often considered to be the more massive counterparts of Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars. While AGB mass loss is related to their strong pulsations, the RSG are often only weakly variable. This raises the question of whether their wind-driving mechanism and the dust composition of the wind are the same. Aims. We study the conditions at the base of the wind by determining the dust composition of a ...

We present Infrared Spectrograph spectra and revised Multiband Imaging Photometer photometry for the 18 members of the η Chamaeleontis cluster. Aged 8 Myr, the η Cha cluster is one of the few nearby regions within the 5–10 Myr age range, during which the disk fraction decreases dramatically and giant planet formation must come to an end. For the 15 low-mass members, we measure a disk fraction ∼50%, high for their 8 Myr age, and four of the eight disks lack near-IR excesses, consistent with the empirical ...

We present an atlas of near-infrared spectra (2.36 μm–4.1 μm) of ~300 stars at moderate resolution (λ/–2000). The spectra were recorded using the Short-Wavelength Spectrometer aboard the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO-SWS). The bulk of the observations were performed during a dedicated observation campaign after the liquid helium depletion of the ISO satellite, the so-called post-helium programme. This programme was aimed at extending the MK-classification to the near-infrared. Therefore the programme ...

In a separate paper, we have reexamined the observations of IR excess obtained with the Infrared Space Observatory satellite and discussed the ages of stars with excess. The amount of dust (measured by the luminosity fraction fd = LIR/L*) seen around main-sequence stars of different ages shows several interesting trends. To discuss these results in the context of a physical model, we develop in this paper an analytical model for the dust production in Vega-type systems. Previously it has been claimed ...

Context.Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars are typified by strong dust-driven, molecular outflows. For long, it was believed that the molecular content of the circumstellar envelope of AGB stars is primarily determined by the atmospheric C/O ratio. However, recent observations of molecules such as HCN, SiO, and SO reveal gas-phase abundances higher than predicted by thermodynamic equilibrium (TE) models. UV-photon initiated dissociation in the outer envelope or non-equilibrium formation by the effect ...

We present the detection of a strong and unusual band in the mid-infrared, at 13 μm, within the N-band window. Using quantum-chemically calculated line lists, and model spectra, we identify this band as the fundamental rovibrational band of SiS. Detection of the overtone band at 6.7 μm confirms the identification. Fitting the line profile shows that the ...

Context. The evolution of intermediate and low-mass stars on the asymptotic giant branch is dominated by their strong dust-driven winds. More massive stars evolve into red supergiants with a similar envelope structure and strong wind. These stellar winds are a prime source for the chemical enrichment of the interstellar medium. Aims.
