This study compared the prevalence of Salmonella spp. and their antimicrobial susceptibilities in pigs from conventional and organic farms during 2012–2013 in Korea and characterized them by molecular methods. Altogether, 100 nontyphoid Salmonella were isolated: 47 from 1324 pigs (3.5%) from conventional farms and 53 from 641 pigs (8.3%) from organic farms. The most frequent serovar was Typhimurium (49%) followed by Panama (24%), 1,4,[5],12:i:- (5%), and Virchow (5%). Overall, the isolates were most often ...

The roots of Abrus precatorius (AP, Fabaceae) have traditionally been used in Vietnam and China for the treatment of inflammatory diseases such as stomatitis, asthma, bronchitis, and hepatitis. Therefore, in this study, we isolated 4-methoxylonchocarpin (ML), an anti-inflammatory compound present in AP, and studied its anti-inflammatory effects in mice with 2,4,6-trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid (TNBS)-induced colitis. In lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated macrophages, ML was found to inhibit nuclear factor ( ...

In this article, we have demonstrated 125-nm-gate InGaAs-on-insulator (InGaAs-OI) high-electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs) on Si substrates via wafer bonding. The highlights of this device were the i-In 0.53 Ga 0.47 As/i-InAs/i-In 0.53 Ga 0.47 As quantum-well channel for high RF performance by improving electron transport properties and the low processing temperature of 250 °C or less for monolithic 3-D integration. As a result, we obtained a current gain cutoff frequency ( f T ) of 227 GHz and a maximum ...

Here, we report the synthesis of high quality monolayer graphene on the pre-treated copper (Cu) foil by chemical vapor deposition method. The pre-treatment process, which consists of pre-annealing in a hydrogen ambient, followed by diluted nitric acid etching of Cu foil, helps in removing impurities. These impurities include native copper oxide and rolling lines that act as a nucleation center for multilayer graphene. Raman mapping of our graphene grown on pre-treated Cu foil primarily consisted ...

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) causes acute diarrhea and dehydration in pigs and leads to death with a high mortality rate, which has been reported notably in Korea. The spike (S) gene of the PEDV isolated in Korea was cloned and sequenced. The nucleotide sequence encoding the entire S gene open reading frame of Korean strain was 4161 bases long encoding 1387 amino acids. The neutralizing epitope of Korean PEDV (K-COE) was expressed in tobacco plants using Agrobacterium-mediated protein transformation. ...

Metal-semiconductor-metal varactor diodes were realized on the 2-D electron gas (2DEG) of an In0.7Ga0.3As HEMT structure. The electrical performances, such as capacitance switching ratio (Cmax/Cmin) and cutoff frequency (fo), were determined by using S-parameters measurements up to 40 GHz. Devices with 130-nm gate length and a gate distance of 2 μm exhibited a cutoff frequency (fo) of 908 GHz and a capacitance switching ratio of 1.4. The corresponding figure of merit, which is defined as fo·Cmax/Cmin, ...

Next-generation wireless communication such as sixth-generation (6G) and beyond is expected to require high-frequency, multifunctionality, and power-efficiency systems. A III-V compound semiconductor is a promising technology for high-frequency applications, and a Si complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) is the never-beaten technology for highly integrated digital circuits. To harness the advantages of these two technologies, monolithic integration of III-V and Si electronics is beneficial, ...

A broadband photodetector is becoming increasingly important as a key element for multicolor imaging. We proposed an Au/n-GaSb Schottky photodetector (PD) array with a wide spectral range from ultraviolet (UV) to short-wavelength infrared (SWIR). The PD was formed by deposition of a 5 nm-thick Au layer on the n-type GaSb substrate and subsequent mesa array formation. The fabricated PD array has shown uniform electrical characteristics and good rectifying behaviors. From the photoresponse measurement, ...

Renal functional decline that is frequently seen during chronic hepatitis B (CHB) treatment can exert adverse effects on overall prognosis. Abstract This paper demonstrates the novel approach of sub-micron-thick InGaAs broadband photodetectors (PDs) designed for high-resolution imaging from the visible to short-wavelength infrared (SWIR) spectrum. Conventional approaches encounter challenges such as low resolution and crosstalk issues caused by a thick absorption layer (AL). Therefore, we propose a guided-mode resonance (GMR) structure to enhance the quantum efficiency (QE) of the InGaAs PDs in the SWIR region with only sub-micron-thick ...

Lattice-matched InAlN/gallium nitride high electron-mobility transistors with a 6 nm-thick InAlN barrier layer were fabricated and characterised. By introducing a very thin InAlN Schottky layer, the short-channel effect could be minimised. The devices with a gate length of 75 nm exhibited output resistance as high as 56.9 Ω mm together with a drain-induced barrier lowering as low as 63 mV/V. The devices also demonstrated excellent high-frequency characteristics such as a unity current gain cutoff ...

Diet-induced obesity is often associated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which instigates severe metabolic disorders, including cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and type 2 diabetes. We have shown that hepatic depletion of CREB regulated transcription co-activator (CRTC) 2 protects mice from the progression of diet-induced fatty liver phenotype, although the exact mechanism by which CRTC2 modulates this process is elusive to date. Here, we investigated the role of hepatic CRTC2 in ...

AHNAK is a giant protein of approximately 700 kDa identified in human neuroblastomas and skin epithelial cells. Recently, we found that AHNAK knock-out (AHNAK−/−) mice have a strong resistance to high-fat diet-induced obesity.
