The modifying effect of Azone and five analogues on diffusion of metronidazole through isolated stratum corneum (SC) is reported. All enhance diffusion except N-0915, which is a retarder. Enhancement ratios (amount penetrating with modifier/amount from control) at 40 min are Azone 6.7; N-0539 6.4; N-0253 3.4; N-0721 1.4; N-0131 1.1; N-0915 0.2. The sulphur analogue of Azone (N-0721) is much less effective than Azone itself, and the short hydrocarbon chain in N-1031 renders it ineffective. Similar results ...

Abstract The application of vacuum metal deposition before scanning Kelvin probe visualization of fingerprints is investigated. The potential contrast between fingerprint ridges and furrows is maximized by the use of silver deposition for non‐noble metals and gold–zinc deposition for noble metals. The higher susceptibility of eccrine fingerprints to vacuum metal overdeposition is confirmed. Additionally, fingerprints are best developed individually and by building the metal deposition slowly to ...

The study purpose was to define changes in coagulation across the sepsis spectrum using rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM). Sepsis patients were recruited on admission to the Emergency Department and Intensive Care Units of a large teaching hospital in Wales. ROTEM markers of clot development and fibrinolysis were determined, as well as standard coagulation markers. A healthy control group matched for age and gender was also recruited (n = 44). 100 patients were recruited (50 sepsis, 20 severe sepsis ...

Abstract Mesoscale eddies are ubiquitous dynamical features that tend to propagate westward and disappear along ocean western boundaries. Using a multiscale observational study, we assess the extent to which eddies dissipate via a direct cascade of energy at a western boundary. We analyze data from a ship‐based microstructure and velocity survey, and an 18‐month mooring deployment, to document the dissipation of energy in anticyclonic and cyclonic eddies impinging on the topographic slope east of ...

Abstract A 4-month glider mission was analyzed to assess turbulent dissipation in an anticyclonic eddy at the western boundary of the subtropical North Atlantic. The eddy (radius ≈ 60 km) had a core of low potential vorticity between 100 and 450 m, with maximum radial velocities of 0.5 m s −1 and Rossby number ≈ −0.1. Turbulent dissipation was inferred from vertical water velocities derived from the glider flight model. Dissipation was suppressed in the eddy core ( ε ≈ 5 × 10 −10 W kg −1 ) and enhanced below it (> ...

Synthetic analogues of marine sponge guanidine alkaloids showed in vitro antiparasitic activity against Leishmania (L.) infantum and Trypanosoma cruzi. Guanidines 10 and 11 presented the highest selectivity index when tested against Leishmania. The antiparasitic activity of 10 and 11 was investigated in host cells and in parasites. Both compounds induced depolarization of mitochondrial membrane potential, upregulation of reactive oxygen species levels, and increased plasma membrane permeability in ...

The fate of mesoscale eddy kinetic energy represents a large source of uncertainty in the global ocean energy budget. Satellite altimetry suggests that mesoscale eddies vanish at ocean western boundaries. However, the fate of the eddies' kinetic energy remains poorly known. Here we show that the generation of small-scale turbulence as eddy flow impinges on the steep and corrugated slope of an ocean western boundary plays a dominant role in the regional decay of mesoscale eddy kinetic energy. We ...

An in-situ scanning vibrating electrode technique is used to investigate the effect of alloyed arsenic on magnesium immersed in chloride containing aqueous solution, both in freely corroding and anodically polarised conditions. Arsenic is shown to strongly suppress cathodic activation of the corroding Mg even under circumstances where breakdown has occurred and subsequent propagation of dark filiform-like tracks is observed. Under galvanostatic anodic polarisation, rates of hydrogen evolution are ...

An empirically derived dependence of the breakdown potential (E b ) of pure magnesium (Mg) on chloride ion concentration ([Cl - ]) is described. For commercial purity Mg, which undergoes spontaneous breakdown in the absence of external polarization, E b is established by following time-dependent changes in free corrosion potential (E corr ). The localized corrosion behaviour of Mg, characterized by in-situ scanning vibrating electrode studies prior to and following breakdown, is employed to explain the E corr ...

An empirically derived dependence of an apparent breakdown potential (E b ) of magnesium (Mg) on chloride ion concentration is reported. In situations where spontaneous breakdown in the absence of external polarization is observed, leading to the subsequent propagation of localised corrosion, E b can be determined by following time-dependent changes in free corrosion potential (E corr ).Breakdown of temporary passivity is marked by a clear inflection in the time-dependent value of E corr , characterised by ...

Abstract Background There is currently conflicting evidence surrounding the effects of obesity on postoperative outcomes. Previous studies have found obesity to be associated with adverse events, but others have found no association. The aim of this study was to determine whether increasing body mass index (BMI) is an independent risk factor for development of major postoperative complications. Methods This was a multicentre prospective cohort study across the UK and Republic of Ireland. Consecutive ...
