The study was undertaken to assess hypercoagulability, by using thromboelastography, in women who use low-dose oral contraceptives (OCs).Forty-three women using low-dose OCs (<or=35 microg ethinyl estradiol) underwent thromboelastography before starting OCs and again during the third month of OC use. Prior and 3-month mean values of four thromboelastogram parameters (maximum amplitude [MA], K time, alpha angle, and R time) were compared by using paired t tests. Comparison according to progestin type ...

Gene regulation at the transcriptional level is a central process in all organisms, and DNA-binding transcription factors, known as TFs, play a fundamental role. This class of proteins usually binds at specific DNA sequences, activating or repressing gene expression. In general, TFs are composed of two domains: the DNA-binding domain (DBD) and an extra domain, which in this work we have named "companion domain" (CD). This latter could be involved in one or more functions such as ligand binding, protein- ...

A new disease affecting sweet oranges on Rangpur lime rootstock, named Citrus Sudden Death, was first detected in the southwestern part of Minas Gerais and northern part of Sao Paulo states in 1999. Initially, affected trees present pale green leaves, followed by pro- nounced leaf drop, twig dieback, and occasional sucker growth of both scion and rootstock. Finally, trees quickly lose all their leaves and die about 6-mo after early symptoms appear. Young fruits remain attached to the twigs of dead ...

Introduction. Mexico harbors a great diversity of Spondias purpurea ecotypes, whose fruit is called Mex- ican plum and has a good consumer acceptance because of its organoleptic and nutritional characteristics. Materials and methods. The concentrations of metabolites in 11 ecotypes of Mexican plum were determined from samples of rind (epicarp) and pulp originating from fresh seasonal fruit. Results and discussion. The mass of these fruits var- ied from 11.1 to 35.0 g, and the epicarp color ranged ...

The fijivirus known as "Mal de Río Cuarto" that affects corn is endemic to the area of Río Cuarto, Cordoba Province, Argentina. One of the preferred species for the development of its vector, the insect Delphacodes kuscheli Fennah, is wheat. In this area, wheat plants with deformed leaves, spikes and spikelets, shortened internodes, leaves with serrated borders, and sterile spikelets were detected, suggesting the possibility that Mal de Río Cuarto Virus could also be infecting this crop. Despite an aggressive multimodal therapeutic regimen, glioblastoma (GBM) continues to portend a grave prognosis, which is driven in part by tumor heterogeneity at both the molecular and cellular levels. Accordingly, herein the authors sought to identify metabolic differences between GBM tumor core cells and edge cells and, in so doing, elucidate novel actionable therapeutic targets centered on tumor metabolism.

In this work we present a phase space analysis of a quintessence field and a perfect fluid trapped in a Randall-Sundrum's Braneworld of type 2. We consider a homogeneous but anisotropic Bianchi I brane geometry. Moreover, we consider the effect of the projection of the five-dimensional Weyl tensor onto the three-brane in the form of a negative Dark Radiation term. For the treatment of the potential we use the "Method of f-devisers" that allows investigating arbitrary potentials in a phase space. ...

The cells, fibers and ground substance of the connective tissue of the snake Xenodon merremii were studied by morphological and histochemical methods. The main results obtained were:1. Xenodon has macrophages, plasma cells, lymphocytes and fibroblasts comparable to these cells in mammals.2. No mast cells were found in this species while a characteristic granular acidophilic cell was described.3. In the mesentery, the collagen appears less polymerized than in mammals. Thus, no collagen fibers were ...

In this paper we investigate, from the dynamical systems perspective, the evolution of a scalar field with an arbitrary potential trapped in a Randall–Sundrum's braneworld of type 2. We consider a homogeneous but anisotropic Bianchi I (BI) brane filled with a perfect fluid. We also consider the effect of the projection of the five-dimensional (5D) Weyl tensor onto the three-brane in the form of a positive dark radiation term. Using the center manifold theory, we obtain sufficient conditions for the ...

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer in men and the second most common in women worldwide. In Latin America and the Caribbean, it has a mortality of 56%. The median overall survival for patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) is currently estimated as ~30 months, which has substantially improved through strategic changes in treatment and in the management of patients. As opposed to other metastatic cancers where first-line regimens are often determined, mCRC requires special ...

We studied the K(+)-selective conductances in primary cultures of rat renal inner medullary collecting duct (IMCD) using perforated-patch and conventional whole cell techniques. Depolarizations above -20 mV induced a time-dependent outward K(+) current (I(vto)) similar to a delayed rectifier. I(vto) showed a half-maximal activation around 5.6 mV with a slope factor of 6.8 mV. Its K(+)/Na(+) selectivity ratio was 11.7. It was inhibited by tetraethylammonium, quinidine, 4-aminopyridine, and Ba(2+) and ...

Biodiversity assessments are critical for setting conservation priorities, understanding ecosystem function and establishing a baseline to monitor change. Surveys of marine biodiversity that rely almost entirely on sampling adult organisms underestimate diversity because they tend to be limited to habitat types and individuals that can be easily surveyed. Many marine animals have planktonic larvae that can be sampled from the water column at shallow depths. This life stage often is overlooked in ...

ABSTRACT Pear is among the fruits of major commercial interest in the world and one of the most imported in Brazil. Brazilian production is very small and the fruit quality is low, due to production problems. The success of culture in the country, among other factors, may be linked to the choice of cultivars, pollinating and rootstocks better adapted to local conditions, and thus depend on the particulars of an agricultural zoning. The aim of this study was to identify, in southern Brazil, homogeneous ...

The cation conductancein primary cultures of rat renal inner medullary collecting duct was studied using perforated-patch and conventional whole cell clamp techniques. Hyperpolarizations beyond −60 mV induced a time-dependent inward nonselective cationic current ( I vti ) that resembles the well-known hyperpolarization-activated, cyclic nucleotide-gated I h and I f currents. I vti showed a half-maximal activation around −102 mV with a slope factor of 25 mV. It had a higher conductance (but, at its reversal ...

Since the sixties immunosuppressive agents have been used in the treatment of multiple sclerosis as there was cumulating evidence of the inflammatory nature of the disease. Cyclophosphamide, azathioprine and methotrexate have been the most frequently employed drugs whereas other agents such as cyclosporine and cladribine have been recently tested for RRMS. Mithoxantrone, on the other hand, was approved by the FDA for treatment of aggressive forms of the disease. Other immunointerventions such as ...
