The Angiotensin II (Ang II) type 1 (AT1R) and type 2 (AT2R) receptors are increased in the heart following myocardial infarction and dilated cardiomyopathy, yet their contribution at a cellular level to compensation and/or failure remains controversial. We ectopically expressed AT1R and AT2R in cultured adult rat cardiomyocytes and cardiac fibroblasts to investigate Ang II-mediated cardiomyocyte hypertrophy and cardiac cell viability. In adult rat cardiomyocytes, Ang II did not induce hypertrophy via ...

The kinetics of formation of the 1:1 complexes of 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol with the ions of nickel(II), copper(II) and zinc(II) have been determined by the stopped-flow spectrophotometric method. Second-order formation rate constants are smaller than might be expected on the basis of a mechanism in which the release of a metal-coordinated water molecule from the outer sphere complex is rate determining. It is suggested that the reaction rates are governed by the closure of the second chelate ...

Base J, β-D-glucosyl-hydroxymethyluracil, is a modification of thymine DNA base involved in RNA Polymerase (Pol) II transcription termination in kinetoplastid protozoa. Little is understood regarding how specific thymine residues are targeted for J-modification or the mechanism of J regulated transcription termination. To identify proteins involved in J-synthesis, we expressed a tagged version of the J-glucosyltransferase (JGT) in Leishmania tarentolae, and identified four co-purified proteins by ...

Multiple sclerosis is an inflammatory disease in which immunological mechanisms play an important role in causing demyelinating lesions in the central nervous system. A number of drugs acting in different stages of these mechanisms have been tested for its treatment. This paper analyses the most important clinical trials with glucocorticoids and immunomodulatory treatments, including human immunoglobulin, using the classes of evidences and types of recommendations as have been defined and widely ...

The kinetics of formation of the complexes of the symmetric dimethyl-substituted-2,2′bipyridines with the Ni(II) ion in methanol were studied by the stopped-flow spectrophotometric method under pseudo-first order conditions ([Ni(II)] ⪢ [Lig]). Reaction-rates were measured at different temperatures and the activation parameters were calculated. The stability constants of the complexes were estimated by spectrophotometric method at 25.0°C. The results show that for ligands 4,4′-, 5,5′- and 6,6′-dimethyl- ...

Abstract The kinetics of formation of the 1:1 complexes of some dialkyl‐2,2′‐bipyridyl‐5,5′‐dicarboxylates with the ion of Ni(II) have been determined by the stopped‐flow spectrophotometric method. Second‐order formation rate constants have been correlated with the Taft modification of the Hammett equation. A linear regression has been found ( P = 0.95 confidence) with the following characteristics: slope = ‐0.6 ± 0.1; intercept = 1.32 ± 0.02 (log k 0 ). An inductive effect of the alkyl groups upon the reaction ...

This study evaluated linear alkylbenzene sulfonate removal in an expanded granular sludge bed reactor with hydraulic retention times of 26 h and 32 h. Sludge bed and separator phase biomass were phylogenetically characterized (sequencing 16S rRNA) and quantified (most probable number) to determine the total anaerobic bacteria and methanogenic Archaea. The reactor was fed with a mineral medium supplemented with 14 mg l−1 LAS, ethanol and methanol. The stage I-32 h consisted of biomass adaptation (without ...

In this paper we investigate, from the dynamical systems perspective, the evolution of an scalar field with arbitrary potential trapped in a Randall-Sundrum's Braneworld of type II. We consider an homogeneous and isotropic Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) brane filled also with a perfect fluid. Center Manifold Theory is employed to obtain sufficient conditions for the asymptotic stability of de Sitter solution. We obtain conditions on the potential for the stability of scaling solutions as well for ...

Understanding how tropical trees coordinate fast growth with water consumption and carbon investment is of high relevance because climate warming may expose tropical forests to increasing stress. Thus, foresters require more information of native tree species envisaged for reforestation. This study examines the relationship between productivity and possibly growth-determining functional traits of xylem anatomy, hydraulic conductivity, foliar morphology and nutrient status in eight tree species in ...

At Stage I, the AFBR was fed with a synthetic substrate containing yeast extract and ethanol as carbon sources, and without LAS; at Stage II, soap powder was added to this synthetic substrate obtaining an LAS concentration of 14 ± 3 mg L−1. The compounds of soap powder probably inhibited some groups of microorganisms, ...

Two expanded granular sludge bed reactors were operated. RAB (adapted biomass) was operated in two stages: Stage I, with standard LAS (13.2 mg L−1); and Stage II, in which the standard LAS was replaced by diluted laundry wastewater according to the LAS concentration (11.2 mg L−1). RNAB (not adapted biomass) had a single stage, using direct wastewater (11.5 mg L−1). Thus, the strategy of biomass adaptation did not lead to an increase of surfactant removal in wastewater (RAB-Stage II: 77%; RNAB-Stage I: ...

An animal model for temporal lobe epilepsy, i.e. kainate-induced limbic seizures in rats, was used to study changes in postsynaptic density composition after extensive synaptic activity. Gene regulation at the transcriptional level is a central process in all organisms, and DNA-binding transcription factors, known as TFs, play a fundamental role. This class of proteins usually binds at specific DNA sequences, activating or repressing gene expression. In general, TFs are composed of two domains: the DNA-binding domain (DBD) and an extra domain, which in this work we have named "companion domain" (CD). This latter could be involved in one or more functions such as ligand binding, protein- ...
