Maxim D. Horwitz, Damian Hanbury, Chris King,

Haemorrhagic complications due to pseudoaneurysms of branch arteries can be treated by selective embolisation. Injuries to the main renal artery cannot be treated in this way without sacrificing the kidney. We report the successful percutaneous treatment of a main renal artery pseudoaneurysm with a stent-graft in a patient with a solitary kidney.

Over the past few years detailed studies of the interaction between alkalimetal adatoms and CO have been made on a wide range of single-crystal substrates using a range of surface science techniques, including vibrational spectroscopy, temperature programmed desorption, LEED, photoemission, NEXAFS and work function changes. In this paper recent experimental work at Liverpool on Cu{110} and Pd{110} is reviewed alongside results from other laboratories on Ru{110}, Fe{111}, Fe{110}, Pt{111}, Pd{111}, ...

We have investigated the accuracy of automatic calibration of digital pelvic radiographs using the single and double marker techniques. Both markers were applied by the radiographer at the time of routine, postoperative radiographs. Each radiograph was loaded into the TraumaCad™software package which calculated the magnification and scaled the radiograph automatically. The median error of magnification in the double marker group was 1.14% when calculated automatically. The median error of the single ...

The synthesis and biological activity are reported for a series of analogues of the previously published indole urea 2 (SB-206553), designed to probe the 5-HT(2C) receptor binding site. Small molecule modeling studies have been used to define a region in space which is allowed at the 5-HT(2C) receptor but disallowed at the 5-HT(2A) receptor. In a complementary approach, docking of 2 into our model of the 5-HT(2C) receptor has allowed us to propose a novel primary binding interaction for this series ...

Bisaryl ethers have been identified with excellent 5-HT2C affinity and selectivity over both 5-HT2A and 5-HT2B receptors. Compounds such as 11, 27 and 38 have potent oral activity in a centrally mediated pharmacodynamic model of 5-HT2C function and their potential as novel non-sedating anxiolytic and antidepressants is under investigation.

Because our beliefs regarding our individuality, autonomy, and personhood are intimately bound up with our brains, there is a public fascination with cerebral organoids, the “mini-brain,” the “brain in a dish”. At the same time, the ethical issues around organoids are only now being explored. What are the prospects of using human cerebral organoids to better understand, treat, or prevent dementia? Will human organoids represent an improvement on the current, less-than-satisfactory, animal models? ...

Introduction Health care training traditionally focuses on medical knowledge; however, this is not the only component of successful patient management. Nontechnical skills, such as crisis resource management (CRM), have significant impact on patient care. This study examines whether there is a difference in CRM skills taught by traditional lecture in comparison with low-fidelity simulation consisting of noncontextual learning through team problem-solving activities. Methods Two groups of multidisciplinary ...

The adsorption of acetic acid on Cu{110} has been studied by high resolution electron energy loss Spectroscopy. At low coverages, adsorption onto the clean surface at 195 K leads to some dissociation to acetate species - but at higher coverages undissociated adsorbed molecules form the predominant species in the adlayer. Warming the acid-saturated surface to 270 K results in an initial rapid deprotonation, but the dissociation reaction quickly terminates before completion. The remaining acetic acid ...

The European Dynamical Exascale Entry Platform (DEEP) is an example of a new type of heterogeneous supercomputing architecture that include both a standard multicore-based “Cluster” used to run less scalable parts of an application, and an Intel MIC-based “Booster” used to run highly scalable compute kernels. In this paper we describe how the compute engine of the widely used NEURON scientific application has been ported on both the DEEP and the Intel MIC platform. We discuss the design and implementation ...

We previously showed that oxidative stress inhibits leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) signaling by targeting JAK1, and the catalytic domains of JAK 1 and 2 have a cysteine-based redox switch. Thus, we postulated that the NO sibling and thiophylic compound, nitroxyl (HNO), would inhibit LIF-induced JAK-STAT3 activation. Pretreatment of human microvascular endothelial cells (HMEC-1) or neonatal rat cardiomyocytes with the HNO donors Angeli's salt or nitrosocyclohexyl acetate (NCA) inhibited LIF-induced ...

Metal contaminants in Antarctic soils are typically found around research stations which are concentrated in ice-free coastal areas. The risk of these contaminants to the Antarctic environment is not well understood, given Antarctica's unique organisms and climate. This study assessed the use of diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT), a passive sampler that measures fluxes of labile metals from soils to porewaters, in Antarctic soils. DGT-labile measurements were compared to three chemical extractants ...

Abstract Microbes that protect their hosts from pathogens are widespread in nature and are attractive disease control agents. Given that pathogen adaptation to barriers against infection can drive changes in pathogen virulence, ‘defensive microbes’ may shape disease severity. Here we show that co-evolving a microbe with host-protective properties ( Enterococcus faecalis ) and a pathogen ( Staphylococcus aureus ) within Caenorhabditis elegans hosts drives the evolution of reduced pathogen virulence as a by- ...
