David Gregory, Damian R. Wilson, Andrew C. Bushell,

Abstract Starting from an assumption that within an area there is a distribution of temperature and humidity, equations are derived for the prognostic evolution of cloud fraction and area‐mean condensed water under the action of uniform forcing. These are contrasted to alternative equation sets which are based upon consideration of humidity variations alone, and approximations involved in the derivations of these are highlighted. The properties of, and relationships between, current diagnostic and ...

Damian R. Wilson, David Gregory,

Abstract The behaviour of widely used large‐scale cloud schemes is assessed in the idealized framework of a single grid box forced by uniform warming or cooling. The general advantages and disadvantages of using diagnostic and prognostic schemes are compared, as are characteristics of observational relationships and specific parametrization schemes used in general‐circulation models. It is noted that all parametrization schemes fail to produce, in some way, the correct behaviour when the grid box ...

Abstract A prognostic cloud fraction and prognostic condensate scheme has been developed for the Met Office Unified Model. This is designed to replace the scheme currently used in weather forecast and climate simulations, in which cloud fraction and liquid water content are calculated diagnostically. Such a scheme overprescribes links between cloud fraction, condensate and water vapour contents. By contrast, our new prognostic cloud fraction and prognostic condensate scheme (PC2) calculates increments ...

CloudSat radar reflectivities are simulated in the Met Office global forecast model in a manner which is consistent with the CloudSat observations. The method is described and applied in an evaluation study of the model's performance over the period December 2006 to February 2007. The study uses both statistical and case study approaches and examines the model's simulation of cloud systems globally and in three regions of contrasting weather and cloud regimes: the tropical warm pool, the North Atlantic ...

Abstract A prognostic cloud fraction and prognostic condensate scheme (PC2) has been developed for the Met Office Unified Model. A companion paper discussed the motivation for a new scheme and described its formulation in detail. In this paper we describe the results of climate model simulations, concentrating on the mechanisms by which the cloud and condensate predicted by the model change between the Control and new scheme. We demonstrate that the detrainment of condensate from the convection scheme ...

The Cloudnet project aims to provide a systematic evaluation of clouds in forecast and climate models by comparing the model output with continuous ground-based observations of the vertical profiles of cloud properties. In the models, the properties of clouds are simplified and expressed in terms of the fraction of the model grid box, which is filled with cloud, together with the liquid and ice water content of the clouds. These models must get the clouds right if they are to correctly represent ...

Changgui Wang, Damian R. Wilson, Tracy Haack, Peter Clark, Humphrey Lean, Robert Marshall,

Abstract Radar ducting is caused by sharp vertical changes in temperature and, especially, water vapor at the top of the atmospheric boundary layer, both of which are sensitive to variations in the underlying surface conditions, local mesoscale weather, and synoptic weather patterns. High-resolution numerical weather prediction (NWP) models offer an alternative to observation to determine boundary layer (BL) structure and to assess the spatial variability of radar ducts. The benefit of using NWP models ...

Damián Vergara Wilson, Jenny Dumont,

This study examines the bilingual compound verb hacer ‘to do’+Verb Eng , consisting of the Spanish verb hacer ‘do’ and a bare English infinitive (e.g. hacer smoke ‘to smoke’). In studies of Spanish/English bilingual speech, hacer+Verb Eng has received attention due to its linguistically hybrid nature. Examining 116 tokens of hacer+Verb Eng from 12 speakers of the New Mexico Spanish-English Bilingual Corpus, we test the claim that this construction has developed out of a higher cognitive load or lexical ...

Jenny Dumont, Damián Vergara Wilson,

Language contact and linguistic change are thought to go hand in hand (e.g. Silva-Corvalán 1994), however there are methodological obstacles, such as collecting data at different points in time or the availability of monolingual data for comparison, that make claims about language change tenuous. The present study draws on two different corpora of spoken Spanish — bilingual New Mexican Spanish and monolingual Ecuadorian Spanish — in order to quantitatively assess the convergence hypothesis in which contact ...

Abstract Observations of Doppler-resolved spectra of differential radar reflectivity provide estimates of particle shapes as a function of their terminal velocity, and they can be derived by having the antenna at a significant elevation angle. Turbulence tends to smear out the details of the actual spectra observed, but the difference in the mean values of velocity using horizontal and vertical polarizations, which the authors call the “differential Doppler velocity” (DDV), is unaffected. Larger raindrops ...

Abstract Many numerical weather prediction models are moving towards more prognostic schemes for the prediction of ice and liquid water contents within clouds. This paper describes a large‐scale cloud and precipitation scheme developed for the UK Meteorological Office's Unified Model. It uses physically based transfer equations to predict ice as a prognostic variable. We review similar schemes and then describe our new scheme, giving examples of its performance in mesoscale forecasts compared with ...

Andrew C. Bushell, Damian R. Wilson, David Gregory,

Abstract Prognostic cloud‐fraction and condensate equations, for the case in which a source injects condensate‐laden, saturated air into a volume, are derived by considering the response of a general distribution of thermodynamic variables within the volume. These prognostic equations are compared with those derived by assuming that condensate is added uniformly to both clear and cloudy parts of the region. For non‐uniform forcing, the local condensate mixing ratio associated with the condensate ...
