Two recent models of risky decision making developed by Fishburn (Fishbijrn, P. C. 1977. Mean-risk analysis with risk associated with below-target returns. Amer. Econ. Rev. 67 116–126.) and by Kahneman and Tversky (Kahneman, D., A. Tversky. 1979. Prospect theory: an analysis of decisions under risk. Econometrica 47 262–291.) have emphasized the importance of a target return or a reference point in determining preferences and choices among gambles. This Note extends the work reported in Payne, Laughhunn, and Crum (Payne, J. W., D. J. Laughhunn, R. Crum. 1980. Translation of gambles and aspiration level effects in risky choice behavior. Management Sci. 26 1039–1060.) on the need to incorporate a target return, reference point, or aspiration level concept in the analysis of risky choice behavior. Two experiments are reported. The flower thrips, Frankliniella tritici (Fitch), the western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), and the soybean thrips, Neohydatothrips variabilis (Beach), were the most abundant thrips species recovered from the orchard. Their relative abundance changed each year. The western flower thrips particularly appears to be most damaging in ...

Testate amoebae are unicellular micro-organisms whose hydrological sensitivity and good preservation in peats make them valuable proxies for past peatland surface wetness, and therefore climate. Previous testate amoebae transfer functions have been spatially restricted with no studies from Asia. To derive a transfer function, a sequence of samples was extracted from an ombrotrophic peatland in Turkey and amoebae counted. The internal structure of the data was explored using principal components ...

Recent studies have attempted to correlate take-off height (TOH or Glide Avalanche) of rigid disks to their topography. Roughness average, mean peak height, and waviness have been emphasized, but no model has been proposed that takes into account the dynamic response of the glide slider to the spatial frequency of the disk topography. In this paper, we calculate the frequency response of glide sliders to disk inputs of various wavelengths, using an air-bearing solver. This calculated transfer function ...

This paper presents a new risk assessment methodology for coal mine excavated slopes. This new empirical-statistical slope stability assessment methodology (SSAM) is intended for use by geotechnical engineers at both the design review and operational stages of a mine’s life to categorise the risk of an excavated coal mine slope. A likelihood of failure is determined using a new slope stability classification system for excavated coal mine slopes developed using a database of 119 intact and failed ...

Abstract The ameliorating effect of high fetal hemoglobin (HbF) levels on the incidence of pain episodes in sickle cell anemia (SCA) is well‐known; however, in children this relationship is less clearly established. We hypothesized that higher HbF levels in children with SCA are associated with fewer severe pain episodes. A meta‐analysis of data from the Silent Infarct Transfusion Trial (n = 456) and the Cooperative Study of Sickle Cell Disease (n = 764), demonstrated that baseline HbF levels were associated ...

Abstract In a long-lifetime dewar, heat loads to the cryogen fall into two distinct categories: parasitic heat leak (i.e. conduction and radiation from the vacuum shell) and internal heat loads (i.e. electrical power dissipation and telescope aperture heating in the case of cooled telescope systems). To accommodate launch loads, the cryogen tank support system of a spaceborne dewar must be stout, and heat conducted from the vacuum shell through the supports can have a large influence on cryogen loss ...

Peatlands subjected to sulfate deposition have been shown to produce less methane, believed to be due to competitive exclusion of methanogenic archaea by sulfate-reducing bacteria. Here, we address whether sulfate deposition produces impacts on a higher microbial group, the testate amoebae. Sodium sulfate was applied to experimental plots on a Scottish peatland and samples extracted after a period of more than 10 years. Impacts on testate amoebae were tested using redundancy analysis and Mann–Whitney ...

Enthusiastic customer endorsements can significantly influence buying decisions and drive sales. In service contexts, advocates are especially important because the specific and complex characteristics of services make personal recommendations very effective. Customer advocacy communications differ from other positive word of mouth (PWOM), though literature on advocacy is surprisingly sparse and inconsistent. Notably, advocacy is strong, passionate, explicit, and ongoing, with an explicit goal of ...
