Abstract Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) remains a major public health problem worldwide. This disease is highly associated with chronic inflammation and a lack of the cellular immune responses against Leishmania. It is important to identify major factors driving the successful establishment of the Leishmania infection to develop better tools for the disease control. Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) is a key enzyme triggered by cellular stress, and its role in VL has not been investigated. In this study, we evaluated ...

Abstract Originally developed for terrestrial science and applications, the US Geological Survey Landsat surface reflectance (SR) archive spanning ~ 40 yr of observations has been increasingly utilized in large‐scale water‐quality studies. These products, however, have not been rigorously validated using in situ measured reflectance. This letter quantifies and demonstrates the quality of the SR products by harnessing a sizeable global dataset ( N = 1100). We found that the Landsat 8/9 SR in the green and ...

Secchi Disk Depth (Zsd) is one of the most fundamental and widely used water-quality indicators quantifiable via optical remote sensing. Despite decades of research, development, and demonstrations, currently, there is no operational model that enables the retrieval of Zsd from the rich archive of Landsat, the long-standing civilian Earth-observation program (1972 – present). Devising a robust Zsd model requires a comprehensive in situ dataset for testing and validation, enabling consistent mapping ...

This work aimed to evaluate immune events in HIV-1-exposed uninfected neonates born from mothers who control (G1) or not (G2) the plasma viral load, using unexposed neonates as controls. Cord blood from each neonate was collected, plasma and mononuclear cells were separated and the lymphoproliferation and cytokine pattern were evaluated. The results demonstrated that the in vitro lymphoproliferation induced by polyclonal activators was higher in the G2 neonates. Nevertheless, no cell culture responded ...

This study evaluated the effect of the consumption of different levels and sources of lipids on metabolic parameters of Wistar rats. Animals were fed with high-fat diet (HFD) containing 20% of lard for 12 weeks to cause metabolic obesity. Subsequently, the animals were divided into six groups and were fed diets with lipid concentrations of 5% or 20% of lard (LD), soybean oil (SO) or fish oil (FO), for 4 weeks. Data were submitted to analysis of variance (two-way) followed by Tukey post hoc test (p < 0.05). ...

Rodrigo Andrade, Daniel Huereca, Joseph G. Lyons, Elaine M. Andrade, Kelly M. McGregor,

The idea that serotonergic synaptic transmission plays an essential role in the control of mood and the pharmacotherapy of anxiety and depression is one of the cornerstones of modern biological psychiatry. As a result, there is intense interest in understanding the mechanisms controlling the activity of serotonin-synthesizing (serotonergic) neurons. One of the oldest and most durable ideas emerging from this work is that serotonergic neurons are capable of autonomously regulating their own basal ...

Mitochondrial metabolism is an attractive target for cancer therapy1,2. Reprogramming metabolic pathways could improve the ability of metabolic inhibitors to suppress cancers with limited treatment options, such as triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC)1,3. Here we show that BTB and CNC homology1 (BACH1)4, a haem-binding transcription factor that is increased in expression in tumours from patients with TNBC, targets mitochondrial metabolism. BACH1 decreases glucose utilization in the tricarboxylic acid ...

The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by SARS-CoV-2, had its first cases identified in late 2019 and was considered a clinical pandemic in March 2020. In March 2022, more than 500 million people were infected and 6,2 million died as a result of this disease, increasingly associated with changes in human hemostasis, such as hypercoagulation. Numerous factors contribute to the hypercoagulable state, and endothelial dysfunction is the main one, since the activation of these cells can strongly activate platelets ...

Bioprocesses are quite difficult and expensive to model, since their operation involves microbial growth under constantly changing conditions, with impact on process kinetics and performance. Hence, there is a need and incentive for the improvement of methods for rapid development of simple, though realistic, mathematical models. In this work the modeling of biotechnological processes is studied with focus on developing methodologies that can be used whenever a re-estimation of parameters is necessary. ...
