Tin monosulfide (SnS) is of interest as a potential solar cell absorber material. We present a preliminary investigation of the effects of sputtering conditions on SnS thin-film structural, optical, and electronic properties. Films were RF sputtered from an SnS target using an argon plasma. Resistivity, stoichiometry, phase, grain size and shape, bandgap, and optical absorption coefficient can be varied by modifying argon pressure for a fixed deposition time. Most films have an indirect bandgap in ...

Animal models and clinical studies have linked the innate and adaptive immune system to the pathology of Parkinson's disease (PD). Despite such progress, the specific immune responses that influence disease progression have eluded investigators. Herein, we assessed relationships between T cell phenotype and function with PD progression. Peripheral blood lymphocytes from two separate cohorts, a discovery cohort and a validation cohort, totaling 113 PD patients and 96 age- and environment-matched caregivers ...

Abstract The changes in the mineral nutrient content of the leaves of an evergreen species, the cork oak (Quercus suber L.), were investigated to assess the possibilities of a diagnosis of the mineral nutrition of this forest species. A comprehensive pattern of change in the leaf contents of N, P, and Ca was then put forward from the data obtained. Among the time intervals that are most favorable to analyses, the end of the vegetative rest period, in January, was investigated more precisely. The ...

The objective of this review article is to discuss and analyze the most important scientific findings from studies of vascular microcirculation in the river buffalo using infrared thermography (IRT), as well as the thermal windows utilized with this species. The goals are to define the scope and areas of opportunity for IRT use in evaluating physiological processes and identifying potential applications in reproductive events associated with andrological traits in males and the detection of estrus ...

During the 1st days of life, water buffalo calves, especially those with low birth weight, are susceptible to hypothermic mortality due to scarce energy reserves provided by fats. This means that monitoring the thermal state of newborns is essential. The objectives of the present study were to apply infrared thermography (IRT) in 109 buffalo calves to detect differences in the surface temperatures of six thermal windows -lacrimal gland, lacrimal caruncle, periocular region, nostrils, ear canal, pelvic ...

The association of scaffolds to repair extensive bone defects can contribute to their evolution and morphophysiological recomposition. The incorporation of particulate biomaterials into three-dimensional fibrin bioproducts together with photobiomodulation therapy (PBM) has potential and can improve regenerative medicine procedures. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effects of PBM therapy on critical size defects filled with xenogenic bone substitute associated with fibrin biopolymer. ...

p-Toluene sulfonic acid (p-TsOH) immobilized either on polystyrene (PS) or silica (Si) was found to be effective in cleaving aromatic ethers containing isopropyl, tert-butyl, allyl, and benzyl groups, as well as mono-, di-, and trimethoxylated benzyl groups, in moderate to excellent yields (54-95%). These protecting groups could be selectively deprotected when they were simultaneously present on the same or different aromatic rings in a substrate.

The predictive value of ascending aortic distensibility (AAD) for mortality and hard cardiovascular disease (CVD) events has not been fully established. This study sought to assess the utility of AAD to predict mortality and incident CVD events beyond conventional risk factors in MESA (Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis). AAD was measured with magnetic resonance imaging at baseline in 3,675 MESA participants free of overt CVD. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to evaluate risk of death, ...

The river buffalo is an emerging production species worldwide; indeed, it is overtaking other cattle as a producer of meat and milk in some countries. Though both species belong to the Bovidae family, they show significant anatomical, physiological, and behavioral differences due to their different phylogenetic positions. The river buffalo is a rustic animal that can benefit from low-quality, fibrous forages due to its digestive system, in contrast to beef cattle or dairy cows. Besides, the buffalo ...

Abstract Background Type 2 diabetes and obesity increase the accumulation of health deficits and may accelerate biological aging. Multidomain lifestyle interventions may mitigate against this. Methods Within a large, randomized clinical trial of intensive lifestyle intervention including caloric restriction, increased physical activity, dietary counseling, and risk factor monitoring compared with diabetes support and education, we examined the accumulation of health deficits across 8 years. We used ...

Tropical regions of Latin America have been incorporated into development in recent decades, with extensive cattle ranching as one of the main economic activities but without adequate planning, drastically degrading the ecosystem. In recent years, buffalo production has been incorporated into the region, with possibilities for development in profitable and sustainable models. Methods The time until first occurrence of a composite of fatal and nonfatal myocardial infarction and stroke, hospitalized angina, or CVD death was analyzed from 8 to 11 years of follow-up of 4,859 adults who ...

Abstract The effect of different pH levels (4.5, 5.5, 6.5, and 7.5) on the growth and mineral nutrition of white lupine (Lupinus albus L., cv. Alban) was investigated in nutrient solution. At pH 7.5, i.e. at the highest bicarhonate concentration, the growth of the roots and of the aerial parts of lupine was decreased significantly. Growth impairment was accounted for in terms of two processes: i) in spite of the presence of Fe‐EDDHA iron chelate in the pH 7.5 solution, white lupine displayed symptoms ...

A solid understanding of the descriptive epidemiology of a disease is essential in etiologic investigations; this includes prevalence and incidence, as well as groups within the larger community who may have noticeably lower or higher rates. We ascertained the usefulness of a non-traditional registry in describing Parkinson's disease (PD) patterns in a community. A passive surveillance PD registry in Nebraska began data collection on 1 January 1997. All physicians were required to report PD diagnosis, ...

Abstract We examined a sample of individuals in the Nebraska State Parkinson's Disease Registry (NSPDR) to determine what proportion meets standard criteria for Parkinson's disease (PD). The NSPDR was established in 1996 in an effort to understand the high prevalence of PD in Nebraska. Only minimal demographic data are included for each entrant. Subjects enter the NSPDR by means of diagnosing physicians, pharmacists dispensing anti‐PD medications and the patients themselves. A series of 356 registrants ...

We explore three different mechanisms designed to controllably tune the joint spectrum of photon pairs produced by the spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) process in optical fibres. The first of these is fibre tapering, which exploits the modified optical dispersion resulting from reducing the core radius. We have presented a theory of SFWM for tapered fibres, as well as experimental results for the SFWM coincidence spectra as a function of the reduction in core radius due to tapering. The other ...

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are a promising material for high-performance electronics beyond silicon. But unlike silicon, the nature of the transport band gap in CNTs is not fully understood. The transport gap in CNTs is predicted to be strongly driven by electron-electron (e-e) interactions and correlations, even at room temperature. Here, we use dielectric liquids to screen e-e interactions in individual suspended ultra-clean CNTs. Using multiple techniques, the transport gap is measured as dielectric ...
