This paper presents investigative studies concerning the lightning performance of 500 kV transmission lines considering the characteristic parameters of first stroke current observed in measurement data along with its statistical variation. Therefore, advanced electromagnetic models were applied during the development of computational models, thus allowing a realistic representation of the first stroke current waveform. Lightning performance studies were conducted applying two of the most commonly ...

Lake Paranoá is a human-made water reservoir created in 1959 together with the new capital of Brazil (Brasilia). With the demands of urban development, population growth, and land use changes, the lake presented severe deterioration of water quality due to the disposal of wastewater with a high concentration of nutrients. To better elucidate the natural and anthropogenic sources controlling the water quality from Lake Paranoá, this study aimed to (1) investigate the main geochemical processes controlling ...

Traditionally, wireless power is delivered through single-carrier, continuous-wave (CW) signals. Most research efforts to enhance the efficiency of wireless power transfer systems have been confined to the circuit-level design. However, in recent years, attention has been paid to the waveform design for wireless power transmission. It has been found that signals featuring a high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) can provide efficiency improvement when compared with CW signals. A number of approaches ...

Abstract A flow injection system coupled to a tungsten coil electrothermal atomizer has been developed for on-line separation and preconcentration, using lead as a model element. The system utilizes three-way solenoid valves for sampling, buffering, washing and reconditioning solution management, and the resin column is inserted in the tip of the autosampler arm of a Varian GTA-96. The solenoid valves and tungsten coil power supply were controlled by a computer program written in Visual Basic, interfaced ...

We analyse new genomic data (0.05–2.95x) from 14 ancient individuals from Portugal distributed from the Middle Neolithic (4200–3500 BC) to the Middle Bronze Age (1740–1430 BC) and impute genomewide diploid genotypes in these together with published ancient Eurasians. While discontinuity is evident in the transition to agriculture across the region, sensitive haplotype-based analyses suggest a significant degree of local hunter-gatherer contribution to later Iberian Neolithic populations. A more subtle ...

Abstract The purpose of this paper was to examine the characteristics of waves generated when swimming with and without the use of Aquatrainer® snorkels. Eight male swimmers performed two maximal bouts of 25 m breaststroke, first without the use of a snorkel (normal condition) and then using a snorkel (snorkel condition). The body landmarks, centre of the mass velocity, stroke rate, stroke length, stroke index, and Strouhal number (St) were quantified. Fourier analysis was conducted to determine the ...

Oxygen concentrations above 99.5% are required for several applications, mainly in the medical and aerospace fields. Two-stage pressure swing adsorption (PSA) processes, combining kinetic separation with equilibrium separation, have been developed for producing 99+% oxygen from air. Argon and nitrogen are kinetically removed from the air feed using a carbon molecular sieve adsorbent and the remaining nitrogen is removed using a N2/O2 selective zeolite. Despite that, two-stage processes are often ...

We determined the zinc isotope composition of mollusks (Crassostrea brasiliana and Perna perna) and suspended particulate matter (SPM) in a tropical estuary (Sepetiba Bay, Brazil) historically impacted by metallurgical activities. The zinc isotope systematics of the SPM was in line with mixing of zinc derived from fluvial material and from metallurgical activities. In contrast, source ...

We determined the stable isotopic composition of zinc in sediment cores, suspended particulate matter (SPM) and rocks collected at the Sepetiba Bay (southeastern Brazil), an estuarine lagoon heavily impacted by metallurgic activities. These isotopic signatures were compared with those from willemite ore, which represent the main mineral refined by the major industrial source of zinc. The aim was ...

This work demonstrates the application at near neutral pH of a photo-Fenton reaction mediated by ferricarboxylates on the treatment of aqueous solutions containing the antibiotic Oxytetracycline (OTC) under solar irradiation. The formation of a Fe:OTC complex after Fe2+ oxidation to Fe3+, in the presence of H2O2, showed the inconvenience of using the conventional Fe2+/H2O2/UV–Vis process at near neutral pH levels, as the complex is retained in the filter. To overcome this, a Fe3+/Oxalate/UV–Vis or ...
