An 8-year-old female Doberman Pinscher was examined because of progressive, asymmetric, ambulatory caudal paraparesis. Myelography revealed extradural left ventrolateral spinal cord compression over the first and second lumbar vertebral bodies. A left hemilaminectomy, extending from the thirteenth thoracic to the second lumbar vertebrae, was done, and an extradural mass was removed. The tumor was identified histologically as myxoid liposarcoma. The dog's neurologic function improved gradually after ...

The influence of three nonionic surfactants (Brij 30, GMO, and GTO) on the electrorheological response of various alumina/silicone oil suspensions is investigated. The dependence of the dynamic yield stress on such variables as surfactant type and concentration, water and ion content, and electric field strength and frequency is reported. The prevalent feature common to all formulations is that the yield stress, tau0, initially increases with surfactant concentration, passes through a maximum, and ...

We report synergistic co-assembly between smectic A liquid crystal (SmA LC) and planar anchoring fluorosilane functionalized silica (F-SiO2) nanoparticles (NPs). Both scanning electron microscope (SEM) images and grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD) patterns show that when cooled from the isotropic phase to SmA phase, F-SiO2 NPs (100-500 nm in diameter) migrate from the bottom to the top of the LC film through the central cusp defects of toric focal conic domains (TFCDs). When the NPs form a monolayer ...

We report the development of a novel Scanometric MicroRNA (Scano-miR) platform for the detection of relatively low abundance miRNAs with high specificity and reproducibility. The Scano-miR system was able to detect 1 fM concentrations of miRNA in serum with single nucleotide mismatch specificity. Indeed, it provides increased sensitivity for miRNA targets compared to molecular fluorophore-based detection systems, where 88% of the low abundance miRNA targets could not be detected under identical conditions. ...

Ultrathin silicon-based flexible 16 × 16 NAND flash memory (f-NAND) is demonstrated utilizing roll-to-plate packaging. The roll-based thermo-compression bonding of the anisotropic conductive film (ACF) transfers and simultaneously interconnects the f-NAND on a flexible printed circuit board. Reliable circuitry operation of the 16 × 16 f-NAND is confirmed with excellent flexibility and stable ACF interconnections.

Delivery of drugs by airway can minimize systemic toxicity and maximize local drug concentrations. Most cancers metastasize to the lungs. In anesthetized and mechanically ventilated healthy dogs, the INC (AeroProbe®) was introduced via flexible bronchoscope into the right caudal ...

Abstract A method is described for measuring the in‐plane permeability of orthotropic fibrous preforms using gas flow. The method is based on an optimization process between computed and measured pressures at various locations in the mold during steady state gas flow through the enclosed preform. The computed pressure is obtained by the control volume finite element method (CVFEM). This method was demonstrated by using a specially designed mold with multiple ports for gas injection and pressure measurement ...

We present high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy studies of trivalent CeB6 and divalent BaB6 rare-earth hexaborides. We find that the Fermi surface electronic structure of CeB6 consists of large oval-shape pockets around the X points of the Brillouin zone, while the states around the zone centre 'Gamma' point are strongly renormalized. Our first-principles calculations agree with data around the X points, but not at the 'Gamma' points, indicating areas of strong renormalization ...

A case of Bowen's disease of the nipple clinically resembling Paget's disease is reported. This lesion was differentiated from other pagetoid lesions by negative histochemical stains for mucin and melanin, positive immunohistochemical preparation for high-molecular weight cytokeratin 66 kd (904) using adequate controls, and electron microscopic findings of squamous cell features. The therapeutic implications of such a pagetoid nipple lesion in the absence of an underlying breast carcinoma are discussed.

Abstract Deficits in working memory (WM) are a consistent neurocognitive marker for schizophrenia. Previous studies have suggested that WM is the product of coordinated activity in distributed functionally connected brain regions. Independent component analysis (ICA) is a data‐driven approach that can identify temporally coherent networks that underlie fMRI activity. We applied ICA to an fMRI dataset for 115 patients with chronic schizophrenia and 130 healthy controls by performing the Sternberg Item ...
