The combination of rice husk ash and common concrete both reduces carbon dioxide emission and solves the problem of agricultural waste disposal. However, the measurement of the compressive strength of rice husk ash concrete has become a new challenge. This paper proposes a novel hybrid artificial neural network model, optimized using a reptile search algorithm with circle mapping, to predict the compressive strength of RHA concrete. A total of 192 concrete data with 6 input parameters (age, cement, ...

Leishmaniasis is a group of infectious-parasitic diseases with high mortality rates, and endemic in many regions of the globe. The currently available drugs present serious problems such as high toxicity, costs, and the emergence of drug resistance. This has stimulated research into new antileishmania drugs based on natural products and their derivatives. β-Ocimene is a monoterpene found naturally in the essential oils of many plant species which presents antileishmanial activity, and which has ...

Maximising the content of supplementary cementitious materials as a partial replacement for Portland cement and using recycled concrete aggregates as a full or partial replacement for coarse aggregates are among the widely adopted strategies in the design of green concrete. However, the synergetic implications of adopting both approaches on concrete properties add complexity to the design of green concrete mixes. This paper proposes a novel AI-based multi-objective optimisation framework addressing ...

The advancements of the sharing economy (SE) have sparked growing interest among scholars. However, the literature on innovation in the SE remains fragmented and without a systematic research agenda for future studies. Aiming to fulfill this gap, this paper follows a systematic literature review encompassing 85 papers. In this study, SE organizations are defined as all commercial or non-commercial product-service systems that capture and redistribute idle resources or assets in crowd-based networks ...

Abstract The interest in cultivating seaweed in European seas as source of food, feed and feedstock for the biobased economy is growing. Amongst the species investigated is kelp, also known as sugar kelp, Saccharina latissima or Laminaria saccharina . The European kelp sector is relatively small, compared to the global production and use, yet growth of the sector is aimed for. An inevitable question for European seaweed producers is how they can compete in the global seaweed value chain. This paper ...

The study aims at investigating the main challenges in University-Industry Technology Transfer (UITT) process, as well as the relevant factors for the successful licensing of university inventions. We interviewed academic inventors of several patents in force, owned by Portuguese public universities. We evaluated the process of patent development considering three phases: research, protection and commercialisation. We observed that most of the patents resulted from master/doctoral research and were ...

This study assesses the effect of entrepreneurship education and the participation in junior enterprises (JA) on the entrepreneurial attitudes and intentions of higher education students. A self-report instrument was answered by 139 management and economics students enrolled in Portuguese universities. The results show that students enrolled in JEs show higher levels of perceived behavioural control than students not involved in such extra-curricular activity. Additionally, students enrolled both ...

Tourism is generally acknowledged as one of the economic sectors with higher growth prospects worldwide. As a consequence, the number of tourism education courses has grown significantly in the last decades in order to meet the demands of the qualified workforce. Nevertheless, students who enter this sector will need different skills to face the challenges of this highly competitive and demanding industry. In this case, entrepreneurial skills are of paramount importance. The aim of this paper was ...

Entrepreneurship education has generated considerable interest in recent decades, largely attributable to the evidence of the positive impact of small and medium-sized enterprises on economic growth, job creation, innovation and wealth generation. Since the first entrepreneurship course was held in 1947 at Harvard University, countless courses and programmes have been developed and implemented throughout the world. Nevertheless, there is still much discussion about the scope, objectives and methodologies ...

The lignin oxidative degradation in the reaction system [PMo7V5O40]8−/O2 has been studied using guaiacyl and syringyl β-aryl ether dimeric lignin model compounds. The oxidation has been monitored by GC/MS and ESI/MS. Although the free phenolic and non-phenolic model compounds were both degraded under aerobic oxidation with [PMo7V5O40]8−, the reaction mechanisms involved are different. Oxidation routes leading to the cleavage of β-O-4 bonds have been proposed.

The reliability and deterministic analyses of wood-cored stiffened deep cement mixing and deep cement mixing column-supported embankments (referred to as WSCSE and DCSE, respectively) considering serviceability limit state requirements are presented in this paper. Random field theory was used to simulate the spatial variability of soil−cement mixing (SCM) material in which the adaptive Kriging Monte Carlo simulation was adopted to estimate the failure probability of a column−supported embankment (CSE) ...

The construct of entrepreneurial alertness has been gaining considerable interest from academics because it is at the heart of the entrepreneurial process. Consequently, there has been a substantial increase in the number of academic papers over the years. However, this is a highly fragmented field of research that aggregates contributions from researchers in the fields of economics and strategy, entrepreneurship, and psychology. Also, in recent decades, the concept of entrepreneurial alertness ...

The development of micro-cracks in concrete is inevitable, and depending upon the external conditions, these cracks can lead to the deterioration of concrete by the ingress of harmful compounds. Bacteria-based healing has provided promising results for the autonomous sealing of cracks. This paper reviews factors that can significantly impact the self-healing performance of bacteria-based cementitious composites. These factors are divided into primary factors involving the selection of fundamental ...

The growing production of concrete is prompting concerns about the sustainability of the construction sector. Therefore, the mitigation of the environmental footprints of concrete as a widely used construction material has become a focus of research. Nonetheless, the growing demand for concrete production and the breadth of its energy efficiency throughout embodied and operating phases pose challenges in tracking energy performance. This study offers a systematic review of the existing body of knowledge ...
