Little is known regarding acute heart failure (AHF) clinical characteristics and its hospital outcome in Latin America. This study sought to assess the prevalence of, and identify differences among, in-hospital outcomes in patients hospitalized for AHF who were stratified by clinical phenotype at a hospital in Latin America. This is a retrospective cohort study of patients with AHF who were hospitalized in the coronary care unit of a Latin American teaching hospital from January 2006 to December 2018. ...

The intensive care unit (ICU) length of stay (LOS) of patients undergoing cardiac surgery may vary considerably, and is often difficult to predict within the first hours after admission. The early clinical evolution of a cardiac surgery patient might be predictive for his LOS. The purpose of the present study was to develop a predictive model for ICU discharge after non-emergency cardiac surgery, by analyzing the first 4 hours of data in the computerized medical record of these patients with Gaussian ...

This work studies the impact of using dynamic information as features in a machine learning algorithm for the prediction task of classifying critically ill patients in two classes according to the time they need to reach a stable state after coronary bypass surgery: less or more than 9 h. On the basis of five physiological variables (heart rate, systolic arterial blood pressure, systolic pulmonary pressure, blood temperature and oxygen saturation), different dynamic features were extracted, namely ...

Traditional plug-flow anaerobic reactors (PFRs) are characterized by lacking a mixing system and operating at high total solid concentrations, which limits their applicability for several kinds of manures. This paper studies the performance of a novel modified PFR for the treatment of pig manure, characterized by having an internal sludge mixing system by biogas recirculation in the range of 0.270–0.336 m3 m−3 h−1. The influence on the methane yield of four operating parameters (recirculation rate, ...

Globalization in the field of industry is fostering the need for cognitive production systems. To implement modern concepts that enable tools and systems for such a cognitive production system, several challenges on the shop floor level must first be resolved. Abstract Because the habitus is an infinite capacity for generating products – thoughts, perceptions, expressions and actions – whose limits are set by the historically and socially situated conditions of its production, the conditioned and conditional freedom it provides is as remote from creation of unpredictable novelty as it is from simple mechanical reproduction of the original conditioning. (Bourdieu, Citation 1990 : 55) Notes ‘El Chocó’, Reportajes, 1993: 46–47. This and subsequent translations into ...

It is difficult to make a distinction between inflammation and infection. Therefore, new strategies are required to allow accurate detection of infection. Here, we hypothesize that we can distinguish infected from non-infected ICU patients based on dynamic features of serum cytokine concentrations and heart rate time series. Serum cytokine profiles and heart rate time series of 39 patients were available for this study. The serum concentration of ten cytokines were measured using blood sampled every ...

Mycobacteriophages are viruses that infect mycobacterial hosts such as Mycobacterium smegmatis and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. All mycobacteriophages characterized to date are dsDNA tailed phages, and have either siphoviral or myoviral morphotypes. However, their genetic diversity is considerable, and although sixty-two genomes have been sequenced and comparatively analyzed, these likely represent only a small portion of the diversity of the mycobacteriophage population at large. Here we report ...

Patients from the Australian Cooperative National Registry of Acute Coronary Care, Guideline Adherence and Clinical Events and Global Registry of Acute Coronary Events between 2009 and 2019, were divided into BMI subgroups (underweight: 40). Logistic regression was used to determine the association between BMI group and outcomes of all cause and CV death in hospital, ...

The immunomodulatory capacity of the human mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC) secretome has been a critical driver for the development of cell-free MSC products, such as conditioned medium (CM), for regenerative medicine applications. This is particularly true as cell-free MSC products present several advantages over direct autologous or allogeneic MSC delivery with respect to safety, manufacturability, and defined potency. Recently, significant effort has been placed into creating novel MSC CM formulations ...

Treatment and prevention of elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) is crucial in patients with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). Elevated ICP is associated with secondary brain injury, and both intensity and duration of an episode of intracranial hypertension, often referred to as "ICP dose," are associated with worse outcomes. Prediction of such harmful episodes of ICP dose could allow for a more proactive and preventive management of TBI, with potential implications on patients' outcomes. The goal ...
