Preterm delivery accounts for 5% of all deliveries and its consequences contribute to significant individual, medical, and social problems. The neuroanatomical substrates of these disorders are not known, but are essential for understanding mechanisms of causation, and developing strategies for intervention. In the recent years, multivariate pattern recognition methods that analyse all voxels simultaneously have been proposed to characterise the neuroanatomical differences between a reference group ...

Donald C. Gillies, Daniel Lewis,

X-ray line broadening measurements have recently shown that ionic materials, such as alkali halides and metal oxides, may be heavily strained by ball-milling. This work has now been extended to some compounds containing atoms in interstitial sites. Those studied included some of the carbides of Ti, Zr, Ta, V, Nb, Mo and W. Ball-milling produced strain comparable to that observed after ball-milling the parent metal. In certain circumstances the strain can be removed by annealing. The induced strain ...

The establishment of a spontaneously transformed tumorigenic human fibroblast line, VIP-F:T, is described. This line was developed from a primary culture of normal skin from a donor from whom a separate nontransformed fibroblast line, Pen-F2, also was established. The transformed line VIP-F:T exhibited aneuploid karyotype with a marker chromosome, showed anchorage-independent growth, and produced progressively growing tumors with morphologic characteristics of sarcoma in CD-1 (nu/nu) nude mice. Marco Gillies, Daniel Ballin,

We present a model of interpersonal attitude used for generating expressive postures for computer animated characters. Our model consists of two principle dimensions, affiliation and status. It takes into account the relationships between the attitudes of two characters and allows for a large degree of variation between characters, both in how they react to other characters' behaviour and in the ways in which they express attitude.

All malignant cancers, whether inherited or sporadic, are fundamentally governed by Darwinian dynamics. The process of carcinogenesis requires genetic instability and highly selective local microenvironments, the combination of which promotes somatic evolution. These microenvironmental forces, specifically hypoxia, acidosis and reactive oxygen species, are not only highly selective, but are also able to induce genetic instability. As a result, malignant cancers are dynamically evolving clades of ...

Abstract Next-generation association studies can be empowered by sequence-based imputation and by studying founder populations. Here we report ∼9.5 million variants from whole-genome sequencing (WGS) of a Cretan-isolated population, and show enrichment of rare and low-frequency variants with predicted functional consequences. We use a WGS-based imputation approach utilizing 10,422 reference haplotypes to perform genome-wide association analyses and observe 17 genome-wide significant, independent signals, ...

The role of rare variants in complex traits remains uncharted. Here, we conduct deep whole genome sequencing of 1457 individuals from an isolated population, and test for rare variant burdens across six cardiometabolic traits. We identify a role for rare regulatory variation, which has hitherto been missed. We find evidence of rare variant burdens that are independent of established common variant signals (ADIPOQ and adiponectin, P = 4.2 × 10-8; APOC3 and triglyceride levels, P = 1.5 × 10-26), and identify ...
