Hole 504B is by far the deepest hole yet drilled into the oceanic crust in situ, and it therefore provides the most complete “ground truth” now available to test our models of the structure and evolution of the upper oceanic crust. Cored in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean in 5.9‐m.y.‐old crust that formed at the Costa Rica Rift, hole 504B now extends to a total depth of 1562.3 m below seafloor, penetrating 274.5 m of sediments and 1287.8 m of basalts. The site was located where the rapidly accumulating ...

Abstract A new enzyme immunoassay (EIA), the Dia Kit Bio-Chagas assay (Gador S.A.), is potentially useful for detecting antibodies to Trypanosoma cruzi in the diagnosis of infected individuals and the screening of blood in blood banks. The EIA is carried out on test strips of plastic backing covered with a nitrocellulose membrane to which a mixture of recombinant T. cruzi antigens 1, 2, shed acute-phase antigen, 13, and 30 has been applied as a horizontal line. A horizontal line of human IgG is included ...

Molten salt reactor represents one of the promising future Generation IV nuclear reactors families where the fuel, a liquid molten fluoride salt, is circulating through the graphite reactor core. The interactions between nuclear graphite and fluoride molten salt and also the graphite surface protection were investigated in this paper by powder X-ray diffraction, micro-Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy coupled with X-ray microanalysis. Two photocatalysts based on TiO2-pillared intercalated montmorillonite have been prepared by microwave for 10 min at 700 W or by furnace heating at 673 K. Montmorillonite pillaring with TiO2 increased the basal spacing to 14.7 Å (conventional heating) and 17.6 Å (microwave heating). XRD patterns of both materials showed the presence of 100% anatase with a slightly higher rate of crystallinity obtained through microwave calcination than by conventional heating at 673 K. Shared interface allowing several users in co-presence to interact simultaneously on digital data on a single display is an uprising challenge in Human Computer Interaction (HCI). Its development is motivated by the advent of large displays such as wall-screens and tabletops. It affords fluid and natural digital interaction without hindering human communication and collaboration. It enables mutual awareness, making participant conscious of each other activities. In this paper, we are interested in ...

The use of semi-hydrolyzable oligoester-derivatized interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) as nanostructured precursors provides a straightforward and versatile approach toward mesoporous networks. Different poly(d,l-lactide) (PLA)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)-based IPNs were synthesized by resorting to the so-called in situ sequential method. The PLA sub-network was first generated from a dihydroxy-telechelic PLA oligomer via an end-linking reaction with Desmodur® RU as a triisocyanate cross- ...

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H7N1 viruses caused a series of epizootics in Italy between 1999 and 2001. The emergence of these HPAI viruses coincided with the deletion of the six amino acids R(225)VESEV(230) at the C terminus of NS1. In order to assess how the truncation of NS1 affected virus replication, we used reverse genetics to generate a wild-type low-pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) H7N1 virus with a 230aa NS1 (H7N1(230)) and a mutant virus with a truncated NS1 (H7N1(224)). The 6aa ...

The object of this study was to evaluate in vitro the influence of various ventilatory parameters on the delivery of synchronized nebulization of terbutaline during mechanical ventilation and to determine a semiempirical model to control the quantity of aerosol delivered into the patient's lung. An ATOMISOR NL9 M jet nebulizer (La Diffusion Technique Française, France) was filled with terbutaline (Bricanyl, Astra-Zeneca, Sweden) and connected to the inspiratory line of a Horus ventilator (Taema, France). ...

The phosphomolybdate salts Q3[PMo12O40] [Q = tetra-n-butylammonium (TBA), n-butylpyridinium (BP), cetylpyridinium (CP)] have been used as catalysts for the epoxidation of cyclooctene under organic solvent-free conditions, using H2O2 or t-BuOOH (TBHP) in water as oxidants, and compared with the BP salt of the analogous tungsten derivative, (BP)3[PW12O40]. High catalytic activities have been recorded down to very low catalyst loadings (2 ppm). The activity and selectivity depend on the nature of the oxidant ...

The discovery of later Middle Pleistocene human remains from the Bau de l'Aubesier, France reinforces an evolutionary model of the gradual accumulation of Neandertal-derived facial and dental features during the Middle Pleistocene of the northwestern Old World. The pronounced maxillary incisor beveling of Aubesier 4 helps to extend the antiquity of nondietary use of the anterior dentition. The interproximal “toothpick” groove on the Aubesier 10 molar increases the sample for these lesions. The pathological ...

We examined whether placental DNA methylation of the glucocorticoid receptor gene, NR3C1 was associated with self-regulation and neuroendocrine responses to a social stressor in infancy. Placenta samples were obtained at birth and mothers and their infants (n = 128) participated in the still-face paradigm when infants were 5 months old. Infant self-regulation following the still-face episode was coded and pre-stress cortisol and cortisol reactivity was assessed in response to the still-face paradigm. ...

Highly comminuted supracondylar humeral fractures were stabilised in six large-breed dogs with a modified type I external fixator using a craniomedial acrylic connecting column and an intramedullary pin which was incorporated into the connecting frame. This construct provided sufficient stability to allow satisfactory bone healing in five of the six dogs, while premature removal of the intramedullary pin and external fixator resulted in subsequent refracture of the humerus in the remaining dog. ...
