Jason Harding, Daniel James,

This paper provides a review of objective performance assessment in elite half-pipe snowboarding. Half-pipe snowboarding is currently coached and judged in competition using subjective measures. Like other sports that rely on subjectivity however, the methodology underpinning how coaches assess athletic progression and judges score performance is open for debate. This paper focuses on technology assisted, objective performance assessment. Key considerations are the specificity of the information, ...

Abstract The recent emergence of the human-pathogenic Vibrio vulnificus in Israel was investigated by using multilocus genotype data and modern molecular evolutionary analysis tools. We show that this pathogen is a hybrid organism that evolved by the hybridization of the genomes from 2 distinct and independent populations. These findings provide clear evidence of how hybridization between 2 existing and nonpathogenic forms has apparently led to the emergence of an epidemic infectious disease caused ...

Background: The need for palliative care in HIV management is underlined by the high prevalence of pain and symptoms, the toxicity, side effects, and virological failure associated with antiretroviral therapy, emergence of co-morbidities, continued high incidence of malignancies, late presentation of people with HIV disease, and the comparatively higher death rates among the infected individuals. Methods: A systematic review was undertaken to appraise the effect of models of palliative care on patient outcomes. ...

Y X Wang, Hui Zhao, T M Harding, Daniel S. Gomes de Mesquita, Conrad L. Woldringh, Daniel J. Klionsky, Alan L. Munn, Lois S. Weisman,

In Saccharomyces cerevisiae the vacuoles are partitioned from mother cells to daughter cells in a cell-cycle-coordinated process. The molecular basis of this event remains obscure. To date, few yeast mutants had been identified that are defective in vacuole partitioning (vac), and most such mutants are also defective in vacuole protein sorting (vps) from the Golgi to the vacuole. Both the vps mutants and previously identified non-vps vac mutants display an altered vacuolar morphology. Here, we report ...

Staphylococcus aureus is a major cause of healthcare associated mortality, but like many important bacterial pathogens, it is a common constituent of the normal human body flora. Around a third of healthy adults are carriers. Recent evidence suggests that evolution of S. aureus during nasal carriage may be associated with progression to invasive disease. However, a more detailed understanding of within-host evolution under natural conditions is required to appreciate the evolutionary and mechanistic ...

Abstract: Non‐native vertebrate predators pose a severe threat to many native species, and a variety of management programs are aimed at reducing predator effects. We sought to assess the effects of predator‐control programs by analyzing changes in prey and predator populations based on data commonly collected in these programs. We examined data from a predator‐control program that primarily targets the introduced red fox ( Vulpes vulpes regalis ) in central California. Red foxes negatively affect populations ...

Leigh syndrome is an encephalomyelopathy that results from a heterogeneous group of mitochondrial disorders characterized by symmetric brainstem spongioform lesions. An infant born with hypotonia and lactic acidosis was found to have symmetric brainstem lesions on T(2)-weighted magnetic resonance imaging consistent with Leigh syndrome. Muscle biopsy failed to reveal ragged-red fibers or cells devoid of cytochrome C oxidase or succinate dehyrogenase. Southern blot analysis of mitochondrial DNA isolated ...

Satellite cells are multipotential stem cells that mediate postnatal muscle growth and respond differently to temperature based upon aerobic versus anaerobic fiber-type origin. The objective of this study was to determine how temperatures below and above the control, 38°C, affect the fate of satellite cells isolated from the anaerobic pectoralis major (p. major) or mixed fiber biceps femoris (b. femoris). At all sampling times, p. major and b. femoris cells accumulated less lipid when incubated at ...

The optimal salt concentration used in metal-ion energy storage devices has long focused heavily on 1 M electrolytes; however, recent evidence suggests taking a deeper look at electrolyte properties as a function of salt concentration. Toward that goal, the effect of concentration on solvation properties for a prototype sodium electrolyte is considered with potential applications for sodium-ion and sodium–air technologies. An empirical force field for sodium triflate in digylme, an electrolyte already ...

We present deep R-band CCD surface photometry of the nearby edge-on spiral NGC 891, which bears many similarities to the Milky Way. Our data confirm van der Kruit and Searle's (1981b) finding that NGC 891 has a thick disk. We use one-dimensional fits of exponential disk models to averaged vertical profiles to show that this popular technique has a major drawback: it does not produce unique solutions when two or more stellar components are present, and no component dominates in the regions studied. ...
