Two-component systems (TCS) are principal mechanisms by which bacteria adapt to their surroundings. Borrelia burgdorferi encodes only two TCS. One is comprised of a histidine kinase, Hk2, and the response regulator Rrp2. While the contribution of Hk2 remains unclear, Rrp2 is part of a regulatory pathway involving the spirochete's alternate sigma factors, RpoN and RpoS. Genes within the Rrp2/RpoN/RpoS regulon function to promote tick transmission and early infection. The other TCS consists of a hybrid ...

Background—misinformation and mistrust often undermines community vaccine uptake, yet information in rural communities, especially of developing countries, is scarce. This study aimed to identify major challenges associated with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine clinical trials among healthcare workers and staff in Uganda. Methods—a rapid exploratory survey was conducted over 5 weeks among 260 respondents (66% male) from healthcare centers across the country using an online questionnaire. ...

The presence of Poisson noise in medical X-ray images leads to degradation of the image quality. The obscured information is required for accurate diagnosis. During X-ray image acquisition process, weak light results into limited number of available photons, which leads into the Poisson noise commonly known as X-ray noise. Currently, the available X-ray noise removal methods have not yet obtained satisfying total denoising results to remove noise from the medical X-ray images. The available techniques ...

During the rehabilitation process, individuals who have experienced a total or partial loss of upper limbs are exposed to many risks. Besides this, a great mental effort is required during the training phase to adapt to a real prosthesis. In many cases, the use of Virtual Reality in Medicine has proven to be an excellent tool for evaluation and support as well as to mitigate risk and to reduce mental effort required. In order to be useful, virtual prosthesis must have a great similarity with the ...

Many parts of Africa have witnessed reductions in Plasmodium falciparum transmission over the last 15 years. Since immunity to malaria is acquired more rapidly at higher transmission, the slower acquisition of immunity at lower transmission may partially offset the benefits of reductions in transmission. We examined the clinical spectrum of disease and predictors of mortality after sustained changes in transmission intensity, using data collected from 1989 to 2016. We conducted a temporal observational ...

An environmental disaster caused by the rupture of a mining tailings dam has impacted a large area of the Rio Doce watershed in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, resulting in unprecedented damage at spatial and temporal scales. The Atlantic Forest is one of the world's most important biodiversity hotspots. A long history of land use conversion has resulted in a highly fragmented landscape. Despite numerous restoration initiatives, these efforts have often biased criteria and use limited species assemblages. ...

Our motivation for writing this editorial is to alert the academic community about the risks of predatory publishing in Biology. By piggy-backing on the open access (OA) movement and taking advantage of the “publish or perish” culture in a system that prioritises quantity over quality, predatory publishing has grown exponentially in recent years and spread across all areas of knowledge. Thousands of predatory journals and books have emerged and (provided a fee is paid) they publish scientific papers ...
