Folliculitis decalvans is an inflammatory presentation of cicatrizing alopecia characterized by inflammatory perifollicular papules and pustules. It generally occurs in adult males, predominantly involving the vertex and occipital areas of the scalp. The use of dermatoscopy in hair and scalp diseases improves diagnostic accuracy. Some trichoscopic findings, such as follicular tufts, perifollicular erythema, crusts and pustules, can be observed in folliculitis decalvans. More research on the pathogenesis ...

Voters may be unable to hold politicians to account if they lack basic information about their representatives' performance. Civil society groups and international donors therefore advocate using voter information campaigns to improve democratic accountability. Yet, are these campaigns effective? Limited replication, measurement heterogeneity, and publication biases may undermine the reliability of published research. We implemented a new approach to cumulative learning, coordinating the design ...

Since praziquantel is the only drug available to treat schistosomiasis, a neglected parasitic disease that affects more than 240 million people worldwide, there is an urgent demand for new antischistosomal agents. Natural compound-loaded nanoparticles have recently emerged as a promising alternative for the treatment of schistosomiasis. Carvacrol is an antimicrobial monoterpene present in the essential oil extracted from several plants, especially oregano (Origanum vulgare). In this study, a carvacrol ...

This paper generates new evidence for England and Wales on the importance of labour pooling as a source of agglomeration economies. Estimates of worker and firm productivity are obtained from longitudinal worker and firm micro-data and used to test the hypothesis that denser labour markets increase the quality of the matching between employees and employers across labour markets. Our findings provide evidence supportive of a positive relationship between the quality of the employee-employer matching ...

Lung decellularization is based on the use of physical, chemical, or enzymatic methods to break down the integrity of the cells followed by a treatment to extract the cellular material from the lung scaffold. The aim of this study was to characterize the mechanical changes throughout the different steps of lung decellularization process. Four lungs from mice (C57BL/6) were decellularized by using a conventional protocol based on sodium dodecyl sulfate. Lungs resistance (R(L)) and elastance (E(L)) were ...

Extensor synergy is often observed in the paretic leg of stroke patients. Extensor synergy consists of an abnormal stereotyped co-activation of the leg extensors as patients attempt to move. As a component of this synergy, the simultaneous activation of knee and ankle extensors in the paretic leg during stance often affects gait pattern after stroke. The mechanisms involved in extensor synergy are still unclear. The first objective of this study is to compare the co-activation of knee and ankle ...

Whole-organ decellularization technology has emerged as a new alternative for the fabrication of bioartificial lungs. Embryonic stem cells (ESC) and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) are potentially useful for recellularization since they can be directed to express phenotypic marker genes of lung epithelial cells. Normal pulmonary development takes place in a low oxygen environment ranging from 1 to 5%. By contrast, in vitro ESC and iPSC differentiation protocols are usually carried out at room- ...

Investments in transport infrastructure have been widely used by decision makers to encourage economic growth, particularly during periods of economic downturn. There has been extensive research on the linkage between transport infrastructure and economic performance since the late 1980s, characterised by widely varying evidence. We conduct a meta-analysis of the empirical evidence on the output elasticity of transport infrastructure, based on a sample of 563 estimates obtained from 33 studies. ...

Summary The prognostic value of biological, clinical and laboratory features was analysed in a series of 265 patients with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) and prolymphocytic leukaemia (PLL). On univariate analysis seven features were shown to influence significantly the survival of the whole group of patients: absolute prolymphocyte count (ABS PROL), percentage of prolymphocytes (%PROL), WBC, spleen size, age, intensity of surface‐membrane immunoglobulin (SmIg) and mouse (M) rosettes. Multivariate ...

A series of 55 patients with B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) and prolymphocytic leukaemia (PLL) was studied in order to investigate the evolution of prolymphocytoid transformation of CLL. Peripheral blood films were assessed for the percentages of prolymphocytes (%PROL) during a followup period of 2 months to 24 years. The majority of patients with typical CLL (less than or equal to 10% PROL) had minor variations or transient increases in %PROL throughout the course of the disease, but in one ...

Summary. The clinical and laboratory features of 300 patients with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) and prolymphocytic leukaemia (PLL) of B‐cell type were studied in order to investigate the relationship between these two diseases. Statistical analysis demonstrated that more than 55% circulating prolymphocytes (PROL) was a defining criterion for PLL, disorder characterized by marked splenomegaly without lymph‐node enlargement, cells with high density of membrane‐immunoglobulin (Smlg), low mouse‐rosettes ( ...

Changes in reflex spinal pathways after stroke have been shown to affect motor activity in agonist and antagonist muscles acting at the same joint. However, only a few studies have evaluated the heteronymous reflex pathways modulating motoneuronal activity at different joints. This study investigates whether there are changes in the spinal facilitatory and inhibitory pathways linking knee to ankle extensors and if such changes may be related to motor deficits after stroke. The early facilitation ...

Purpose.: To determine effects of intravitreous anti-TNF-α (infliximab) in a laser-induced choroidal neovascularization (CNV) model by fluorescein angiogram (FA), immunofluorescence, ELISA, and glycosaminoglycan analyses. Methods.: CNV induction was performed using argon laser. Rats were divided into eight groups (no-laser no-infliximab; laser; laser with 10, 20, 40, 80, or 320 μg infliximab; and isotype-matched IgG). After 3 weeks, CNV area was measured by FA and von Willebrand factor (vWF) immunofluorescence. ...

Abstract Higher plants produce several families of proteins with toxic properties, which act as defense compounds against pests and pathogens. The thionin family represents one family and comprises low molecular mass cysteine‐rich proteins, usually basic and distributed in different plant tissues. Here, we report the purification and characterization of a new thionin from cowpea ( Vigna unguiculata ) with proteinase inhibitory activity. Cowpea thionin inhibits trypsin, but not chymotrypsin, binding ...

Scavenger or Fcγ receptors are important for capture and clearance of modified LDL particles by monocytes/macrophages. Uptake via scavenger receptors is not regulated by intracellular levels of cholesterol and in consequence, macrophages develop into foam cells in the arterial intima. The levels of scavenger receptor CD36 are increased in atherosclerotic lesions and there is evidence that some components of oxLDL auto-regulate the expression of this receptor. Fcγ receptor expression is increased ...

Although the productivity gains of urban agglomeration economies are generally found to be positive, there is a great deal of variability in the magnitude of reported estimates. This paper undertakes a quantitative review of the empirical literature on agglomeration through a meta-analysis of 729 elasticities taken from 34 different studies. The objective is to make sense of the range of values for agglomeration economies found in the literature by identifying some key characteristics that affect ...
