This paper proposes a new version of genetic algorithms—the anticipatory genetic algorithm AGA. The performance evaluation included in the paper shows that AGA is superior to traditional genetic algorithm from both speed and accuracy points of view. The paper also presents how this algorithm can be applied to solve a complex problem: image annotation, intended to be used in content based image retrieval systems.

The homeobox gene Hox-2.4 is transcriptionally activated in cells of the mouse myeloid leukemia WEHI-3B. The constitutive Hox-2.4 expression in WEHI-3B cells is due to insertion of a transposable element belonging to the family of intracisternal A particles. In this study, we demonstrated the oncogenic potential of this activated homeobox gene. NIH 3T3 fibroblast clones bearing the activated Hox-2.4 gene produced fibrosarcomas in nude mice.

Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) is a commonly prescribed antimicrobial agent for a wide variety of infections. It is generally well tolerated in a majority of patients; however, serious adverse effects have been described with its usage. Hypoglycaemia is an exceedingly rare but potentially life-threatening side effect of this antimicrobial agent due to its sulfonylurea-like effect. We describe a case of symptomatic, refractory hypoglycaemia secondary to TMP-SMX in a patient being treated ...

Tranexamic acid reduces surgical bleeding and reduces death due to bleeding in patients with trauma. Meta-analyses of small trials show that tranexamic acid might decrease deaths from gastrointestinal bleeding. We aimed to assess the effects of tranexamic acid in patients with gastrointestinal bleeding.

Background Weight gain and obesity after brain damage have been described in both children and adults. Most commonly, they are caused by damage to the hypothalamus. We report here a case of hyperphagia and rapid weight gain after surgical removal of brainstem cavernoma, followed by resolution after gastric bypass surgery. Case Presentation A 30-year-old woman presented with acute onset of facial paresthesias, left-side weakness, and double vision. Brain MRI disclosed a 1.5 × 1.7 × 2.3 cm heterogeneous ...

Background Hypercalcemia during flares of sarcoidosis is reported to occur with a 5-10% incidence. The underlying mechanism is thought to involve high circulating concentrations of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3, produced by 1α-hydroxylation of vitamin D within sarcoid granulomas. Granulomatous production of parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTH-rp), important in humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy, may also play a role in abnormal calcium metabolism. We report a case of sarcoidosis that presented with significant ...

This study examines the intricate relationship between economic growth and European environmental degradation via the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC). Our results contest the traditional inverted U-shape model of the Environmental Kuznets Curve, indicating that the theory may not be consistently applicable across European countries. Utilizing CS-ARDL and MMQR modelling, we reveal substantial regional disparities. Western European nations demonstrate a typical Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) pattern ...

Pulmonary complications are the most common cause of death after surgery. This study aimed to derive and externally validate a novel prognostic model that can be used before elective surgery to estimate the risk of postoperative pulmonary complications and to support resource allocation and prioritisation during pandemic recovery. Data from an international, prospective cohort study were used to develop a novel prognostic risk model for pulmonary complications after elective surgery in adult patients ( ...
