Two internal-fixation plates with large differences in bending stiffness were applied to pairs of intact femora of six adult mongrel dogs to study the osteoporosis induced by rigid fixation. After nine and twelve months of plate application a significant, increased amount of bone atrophy was seen on the rigidly plated side. Biomechanical measurements of specimens from various segments of both femoral diaphyses showed the bones to have similar mechanical properties (as tissue), but different structural ...

Abstract We present a methodology to achieve 3D high‐resolution diffusion tensor image reconstruction of the brain in moving subjects. The source data is diffusion‐sensitized single‐shot echo‐planar images. After continuous scanning to acquire a repeated series of parallel slices with 15 diffusion directions, image registration is used to realign the images to correct for subject motion. Once aligned, the diffusion images are treated as irregularly‐sampled data where each voxel is associated with ...

Formation of a fully differentiated, implantation competent blastocyst requires the expression of a complex repertoire of molecules. However, the events that drive morphogenesis are poorly elucidated in the human embryo. In this work, we describe the amplification of representative cDNAs from morphologically and developmentally normal, individual human embryos at all stages from pronucleate to blastocyst. These cDNAs were probed to reveal the temporal expression pattern of cell adhesion molecules ...

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to submit and test a model of corporate entrepreneurship (CE). Design/methodology/approach Using a sample of 264 employees of a mid‐sized organization, the authors conceptualize three antecedent categories of CE: process, context, and individual characteristics. The authors also test the mediating affect of CE on desirable individual outcomes: job satisfaction, turnover intent, and affective commitment. Findings The results indicate that the model does an adequate ...

Motion degrades magnetic resonance (MR) images and prevents acquisition of self-consistent and high-quality volume images. A novel methodology, Snapshot magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with volume reconstruction (SVR) has been developed for imaging moving subjects at high resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The method combines registered 2D slices from sequential dynamic single-shot scans. The SVR approach requires that the anatomy in question is not changing shape or size and is moving ...

The usefulness of bovine serum albumin (BSA) as a model protein for testing NMR methods for the study of protein–ligand interactions is discussed. Isothermal titration calorimetry established the binding affinity and stoichiometry of the specific binding site for L-tryptophan, D-tryptophan, naproxen, ibuprofen, salicylic acid and warfarin. The binding affinities of the same ligands determined by NMR methods are universally weaker (larger KD). This is because the NMR methods are susceptible to interference ...

Recent work has shown that differentially expressed cDNA fragments identified during biotic challenge have great potential as genetic markers for pest and disease resistance in sugarcane. Responses to the smut fungus (Ustilago scitaminea), the stalk borer eldana (Eldana saccharina) and Sugarcane Mosaic Virus (SCMV) have been the main functional targets to date. Potentially useful cDNAs were identified using SSH and cDNA-AFLP differential display. These were isolated, sequenced and assigned putative ...

Knowledge of T2* may be useful for assessing brain development, brain abnormalities, and for optimizing functional imaging studies.Maternal respiration and unpredictable fetal motion mean that conventional multishot acquisition techniques used in adult T2* relaxometry studies are not practical. Single shot multiecho echo planar imaging was ...

There is an increasing role for bioinformatic and phylogenetic analysis in tropical medicine research. However, scientists working in low- and middle-income regions may lack access to training opportunities in these methods. To help address this gap, a 5-day intensive bioinformatics workshop was offered in Lima, Peru. The syllabus is presented here for others who want to develop similar programs. To assess knowledge gained, a 20-point knowledge questionnaire was administered to participants (21 participants) ...
