Several studies have suggested that the likelihood of paresthesia may depend on the local anesthetic used. The purpose of this study was to determine if the type of local anesthetic administered had any effect on reports of paresthesia in dentistry in the United States. The authors obtained reports of paresthesia involving dental local anesthetics during the period from November 1997 through August 2008 from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System. They used chi(2) analysis ...

ABSTRACT Anthropogenic pressure on flow regimes has been recognized as a significant threat to the health of rivers in Canada and elsewhere. Yet while we know that the historical hydrological conditions prevailing at river sites can be assigned to runoff regime types, the implications of this hydrological structure on biological community composition have been poorly studied. Here we support the improvement of guidelines for flow management by exploring the relationship between biota and runoff ...

Abstract Introduction The use of electric bicycles (E-bike) has dramatically increased. E-bikes offer convenient, environmental-friendly, and less expensive alternative to other forms of transport. However, E-bikes provide a new public health challenge in terms of safety and injury prevention. This study is the first to specifically investigate the E-bike related orthopaedic injuries, based on a national trauma registry. Methods Data from a National Trauma Registry were reviewed for patients hospitalized ...

Abstract We carry out a phase-curve analysis of the KELT-9 system using photometric observations from NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). The measured secondary eclipse depth and peak-to-peak atmospheric brightness modulation are <?CDATA ${650}_{-15}^{+14}$?> and 566 ± 16 ppm, respectively. The planet’s brightness variation reaches maximum 31 ± 5 minutes before the midpoint of the secondary eclipse, indicating a 5.°2 ± 0.°9 eastward shift in the dayside hot spot from the substellar point. ...

We measured the optical phase curve of the transiting brown dwarf KELT-1b (TOI 1476, Siverd et al. 2012) using data from the TESS spacecraft. We found that KELT-1b shows significant phase variation in the TESS bandpass, with a relatively large phase amplitude of $234^{+43}_{-44}$ ppm and a secondary eclipse depth of $371^{+47}_{-49}$ ppm. We also measured a marginal eastward offset in the dayside hotspot of $18.3^\circ\pm7.4^\circ$ relative to the substellar point. We detected a strong phase curve signal ...

Abstract Using existing longitudinal data from 570 infants in the Maternal Lifestyle Study, we explored the predictive value of maternal and infant affect and maternal vocalizations during 2 minutes of face‐to‐face interactions at 4 months on IQ scores at 4.5 and 7 years. After controlling for demographic factors, maternal depression, and prenatal drug exposure, maternal positive affect and maternal positive vocalizations emerged as predictors of both verbal and performance IQ at 4.5 and 7 years. ...

Self-supervised, category-agnostic segmentation of real-world images is a challenging open problem in computer vision. Here, we show how to learn static grouping priors from motion self-supervision by building on the cognitive science concept of a Spelke Object: a set of physical stuff that moves together. We introduce the Excitatory-Inhibitory Segment Extraction Network (EISEN), which learns to extract pairwise affinity graphs for static scenes from motion-based training signals. EISEN then produces ...

Abstract This study investigated the ways in which families constructed an understanding of evolution exhibits at a natural history museum. We examined museum visitors’ use of exhibit text and the types of evolution‐related talk in parent‐child conversations while visiting the chimp/human and the artiodactyl exhibits. Participants were 52 families with children aged 2‐ to 11‐years who agreed to be digitally recorded. Analyses of parent‐child conversations indicated that families who read exhibit ...

We investigate Floquet Topological Insulators in the presence of spatially-modulated light. We extend on previous work to show that light can be used to generate and control localized modes in the bulk of these systems. We provide examples of bulk modes generated through modulation of different properties of the light, such as its phase, polarization and frequency. We show that these effects may be realized in a variety of systems, including a zincblende model and graphene, and also provide a generalization ...

Floquet topological insulators are topological phases of matter generated by the application of time-periodic perturbations on otherwise conventional insulators. We demonstrate that spatial variations in the time-periodic potential lead to localized quasi-stationary states in two-dimensional systems. These states include one-dimensional interface modes at the nodes of the external potential, and fractionalized excitations at vortices of the external potential. We also propose a setup by which light ...

We investigate the amplitude (Higgs) mode of the relativistic O(N) model in the vicinity of the Wilson-Fisher quantum critical point in D=4-epsilon spacetime dimensions. We compute the universal part of the scalar spectral function near the transition, to leading non-trivial order in the ordered phase, and to next to leading order in both the disordered phase and the quantum critical regime. We find that, in the disordered phase, the spectral function has a threshold behavior with no Higgs-like peak, ...

Two studies investigated the impact of job applicants' facial maturity, gender, and achievement level on hiring recommendations. The results revealed that discrimination based on gender and facial appearance varies with the type of job for which an applicant is being considered. Applicants who were babyfaced or female were favored for jobs requiring qualities of warmth and submission, whereas those who were maturefaced or male were favored for jobs requiring qualities of shrewdness and leadership. ...

All things converge: A highly convergent synthesis of (−)-okilactomycin utilizes a Prins-type Maitland–Japp cyclization for the fragment assembly of two complex intermediates (see scheme). The synthesis also employs a highly diastereoselective Lewis acid promoted Diels–Alder reaction and an olefin ring-closing metathesis to close a strained 11-membered macrocycle.

This study examined understanding of evolution in 52 students ( M = 14.48 years, SD = 0.89) before and after a guided field trip to a natural history museum and in a comparison group of 18 students ( M = 14.17 years, SD = 0.79) who did not attend the trip. During the first run their intrinsic dynamics of attention focus was established. Accordingly, during ...

Deformational plagiocephaly is a term describing cranial a-symmetry and deformation commonly seen in infants. The purpose of this work was to develop a methodology for assessment and modelling of head asymmetry. The clinical population consisted of 38 infants for whom 3-dimensional surface scans of the head had been obtained both before and after their helmet orthotic treatment. Non-rigid registration of a symmetric template to each of the scans provided detailed point correspondence between scans. ...
