Introduction . The lack of evidence regarding the best available material for restoring occlusal‐proximal cavities in primary teeth leads to the development of new restorative material, with nanoparticles, in order to enhance mechanical properties, resulting in increased restoration longevity. Aim. To evaluate the Knoop hardness and bond strength of nanoparticles material glass carbomer cement (CAR) and high‐viscosity glass ionomer cement (GIC) in sound and caries‐affected dentin. Methods. Forty bovine ...

Abstract Background ADAM33 protein is a member of the family of transmembrane glycoproteins composed of multidomains. ADAM family members have different activities, such as proteolysis and adhesion, making them good candidates to mediate the extracellular matrix remodelling and changes in cellular adhesion that characterise certain pathologies and cancer development. It was reported that one family member, ADAM23 , is down-regulated by promoter hypermethylation. This seems to correlate with tumour ...

Rough mutants of Brucella abortus were generated by disruption of wbkC gene which encodes the formyltransferase enzyme involved in LPS biosynthesis. In bone marrow-derived macrophages the B. abortusDeltawbkC mutants were attenuated, could not reach a replicative niche and induced higher levels of IL-12 and TNF-alpha when compared to parental smooth strains. Additionally, mutants exhibited attenuation in vivo in C57BL/6 and interferon regulatory factor-1 knockout mice. DeltawbkC mutant strains induced ...

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a malignant neoplasm associated with liver cirrhosis, with an annual incidence of 3% to 9%, which is one of the main causes of death in patients with cirrhosis. Viral hepatitis is associated with an increased risk of HCC, probably due to an inflammatory reaction. Colchicine is an antiinflammatory agent that inhibits the formation of intracellular microtubules, affecting mitosis and fibrogenesis. Diverse clinical studies have failed to demonstrate the benefit of colchicine ...

Cancer cachexia, of which the most notable symptom is severe and rapid weight loss, is present in the majority of patients with advanced cancer. Inflammatory mediators play an important role in the development of cachexia, envisaged as a chronic inflammatory syndrome. The white adipose tissue (WAT) is one of the first compartments affected in cancer cachexia and suffers a high rate of lipolysis. It secretes several cytokines capable of directly regulating intermediate metabolism. A common pathway ...

The use of natural products and derivatives for the prevention and control of non-communicable chronic diseases, such as type-2 diabetes (T2D), obesity, and hepatic steatosis is a way to achieve homeostasis through different metabolic pathways. Thus, male C57BL/6 mice were divided into the following groups: high-fat diet (HFD) vehicle, HFD + Supplemented, HFD + Supplemented_S, and isolated compounds. The vehicle and experimental formulations were administered orally by gavage once a day over the four ...

Cancer/testis Antigens (CTAs) are immunogenic proteins with a restricted expression pattern in normal tissues and aberrant expression in different types of tumors being considered promising candidates for immunotherapy. We used the alignment between EST sequences and the human genome sequence to identify novel CT genes. By examining the EST tissue composition of known CT clusters we defined parameters for the selection of 1184 EST clusters corresponding to putative CT genes. The expression pattern ...

Exhaled carbon monoxide (COExh) measurement is used to confirm smoking status in smoking cessation programs, but the cut-off level is still a matter for discussion. The objective of this study was to compare COExh levels in smokers and non-smokers to validate the method in a Brazilian population and to estimate the probability of the patient still smoking according to different cut-off points. Blood infection by the simian parasite, Plasmodium simium, was identified in captive (n = 45, 4.4%) and in wild Alouatta clamitans monkeys (n = 20, 35%) from the Atlantic Forest of southern Brazil. A single malaria infection was symptomatic and the monkey presented clinical and haematological alterations. A high frequency of Plasmodium vivax-specific antibodies was detected among these monkeys, with 87% of the monkeys testing positive against P. vivax antigens. These findings highlight the possibility ...

Transcriptomic and proteomic studies have improved our knowledge of guard cell function; however, metabolic changes in guard cells remain relatively poorly understood. Here we analysed metabolic changes in guard cell-enriched epidermal fragments from tobacco during light-induced stomatal opening. Increases in sucrose, glucose and fructose were observed during light-induced stomatal opening in the presence of sucrose in the medium while no changes in starch were observed, suggesting that the elevated ...

Summary Isoform 3 of sucrose synthase ( SUS3 ) is highly expressed in guard cells; however, the precise function of SUS 3 in this cell type remains to be elucidated. Here, we characterized transgenic Nicotiana tabacum plants overexpressing SUS3 under the control of the stomatal‐specific KST 1 promoter, and investigated the changes in guard cell metabolism during the dark to light transition. Guard cell‐specific SUS3 overexpression led to increased SUS activity, stomatal aperture, stomatal conductance, ...

Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax have evolved with host switches between non-human primates (NHPs) and humans. Studies on the infection dynamics of Plasmodium species in NHPs will improve our understanding of the evolution of these parasites; however, such studies are hampered by the difficulty of handling animals in the field. The aim of this study was to detect genomic DNA of Plasmodium species from the faeces of New World monkeys. Faecal samples from 23 Alouatta clamitans from the Centre ...

Zinc (Zn) participates in numerous metabolic processes in plants under normal concentrations. In polluted environments, plants can develop different strategies to cope with Zn excess. Zinc stress can alter the photosynthetic metabolism and increase the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Therefore, this study aimed at evaluating the zinc tolerance of Handroanthus impetiginosus (Pink Ipê) and Tabebuia roseoalba (White ipê) under greenhouse conditions. We assessed the effects of different Zn ...

The total additive content was fixed at 20 vol.-%, maintaining the Y2O3 content in each additive system at 35 vol.-%. Cold isostatically pressed samples were sintered at 1900, 2000 and 2100 °C under Ar atmosphere during 30 min. The most promising results have been obtained by samples with AlN/Y2O3 additions ...
