Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) impair the physiological functions of Retinal Pigment Epithelial (RPE) cells, which are known as one major cause of age-related macular degeneration and retinopathy diseases. The purpose of this study is to explore the cytoprotective effects of the antioxidant Bucida buceras extract in co-treatment with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) delivery as a single addition or with continuous generation using glucose oxidase (GOx) in ARPE-19 cell cultures. The mechanism of Bucida buceras ...

This study aimed to assess the relation between the insertion torque and implant stability quotient (ISQ recorded immediately and 6 months after implant placement).Twenty-five patients over the age of 18 years were selected for this study. One implant was placed per patient after tooth extraction. All implants had the same size (11.5 × 3.75 mm) and brand (Hexagonal Morse cone, DSP Biomedical). The insertion torque (Ncm) and resonance frequency analysis (ISQ value) (Osstell Mentor) were used to assess the ...

Lithophyllum species in the Mediterranean Sea function as algal bioconstructors, contributing to the formation of biogenic habitats such as coralligenous concretions. In such habitats, thalli of Lithophyllum , consisting of crusts or lamellae with entire or lobed margins, have been variously referred to as either one species, L. stictiforme , or two species, L. stictiforme and L. cabiochiae , in the recent literature. We investigated species diversity and phylogenetic relationships in these algae by sequencing ...

Abstract To determine potential predictors of long‐term survival in a large set of Hispanic (Mexican) patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) treated with imatinib. We conducted an analysis with data from 411 patients with CML treated at the National Cancer Institute – Mexico, between January 2000 and December 2016. We found a median age at diagnosis of 40 years (range: 18‐84 years). The survival rate at 150 months was 82.02%, and we found that phase at diagnosis ( β : 0.447, 95% Confidence Interval [ ...

In this article, we examine the type material of Cocconeis neuquina Frenguelli from the type locality in Neuquén province and other samples in southern Santa Cruz province (Patagonia, Argentina). Cocconeis neuquina is a small species with an oval-subcircular to broadly elliptical valve outline. The sternum valve is externally convex, striae are radiate and uniseriate, and areolae are rounded towards the mantle. The raphe valve is externally concave, the raphe is straight and filiform, striae are ...

Preliminary genotipic and phenotypic tests allowed the selection of 16 strains, identified as Limosilactobacillus fermentum (12 strains), Levilactobacillus brevis (2), Lentilactobacillus buchneri (1) and Weissella confusa (1). They were initially studied at the technological level, focusing ...

GluN3A is an atypical glycine-binding subunit of NMDA receptors (NMDARs) whose actions in the brain are mostly unknown. Here, we show that the expression of GluN3A subunits controls the excitability of mouse adult cortical and amygdalar circuits via an unusual signaling mechanism involving the formation of excitatory glycine GluN1/GluN3A receptors (eGlyRs) and their tonic activation by extracellular glycine. eGlyRs are mostly extrasynaptic and reside in specific neuronal populations, including the ...

Metformin is the first-line therapy for treating type 2 diabetes and a promising anti-aging drug. We set out to address the fundamental question of how gut microbes and nutrition, key regulators of host physiology, affect the effects of metformin. Combining two tractable genetic models, the bacterium E. coli and the nematode C. elegans, we developed a high-throughput four-way screen to define the underlying host-microbe-drug-nutrient interactions. We show that microbes integrate cues from metformin ...

Conventional retention models lead to accurate descriptions of the elution behaviour from the fitting of data for single solutes or from a set of solutes, one by one. However, the simultaneous fitting of several solutes through a regression process that separates the contributions of column and solvent from those of each solute is also possible. The result is a global retention model constituted by a set of equations with some common parameters (those associated with column and solvent), whereas ...

Introduction In a previous study we found that ghrelin (Ghrl) misbalance during the peri-implantation period significantly impaired fetus development. In this study we aimed to evaluate the putative mechanisms underlying these effects, including embryo implantation success, uterine nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity, nitric oxide synthesis and the inflammatory/immune uterine profile. Methods Ghrelin misbalance was induced by injecting 4nmol/animal/day of Ghrl (hyperghrelinemia) or 6nmol/animal/day ...

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB), essential in fermenting milk, produce an array of antimicrobial compounds, notably bacteriocins, which contribute to the extended shelf life of dairy goods. Bacteriocins, ribosomally synthesized peptides, display broad or narrow-spectrum antimicrobial activity, thus holding promise in food preservation. The classification of LAB bacteriocins is intricate, reflecting evolving genomic insights and biosynthesis mechanisms. Strategies for integrating bacteriocins into dairy ...

Increased cellular degradation by autophagy is a feature of many interventions that delay ageing. We report here that increased autophagy is necessary for reduced insulin-like signalling (IIS) to extend lifespan in Drosophila and is sufficient on its own to increase lifespan. We first established that the well-characterised lifespan extension associated with deletion of the insulin receptor substrate chico was completely abrogated by downregulation of the essential autophagy gene Atg5 . We next directly ...

Abstract G protein‐coupled receptors are known to form homo‐ and heteromers at the plasma membrane, but the stoichiometry of these receptor oligomers are relatively unknown. Here, by using bimolecular fluorescence complementation, we visualized for the first time the occurrence of heterodimers of metabotropic glutamate mGlu 5 receptors (mGlu 5 R) and dopamine D 2 receptors (D 2 R) in living cells. Furthermore, the combination of bimolecular fluorescence complementation and bioluminescence resonance ...

Abstract The literature suggests that in highly polarized political contexts, supreme courts often experience politicization. However, this article contributes to the literature by examining the case of Uruguay, where political polarization is moderate but increasing. The study finds that in a context of moderate polarization, where the connection between political parties and the courts is weak, the negative effects of polarization on the court do not manifest. This weak connection is attributed ...
