Toxic metals, such as mercury, contribute substantially to anthropogenic pollution in many estuarine environments. Animals living in those environments, particularly invertebrate filter feeders like tunicates, can be used as bioindicators. In an attempt to identify cellular markers for revealing pollution, this study examined in vitro the effects of different concentrations of methyl mercury on Styela plicata hemocytes. The harvested hemocytes from S. plicata that were exposed to the metal had a ...

A new simple and multifunctional fluorescent probe based on pyrene linked through an imine bond to a hydroxyphenol unit was synthesised, fully characterized and investigated in solution. Additionally, its behaviour in the presence of several ions (H+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Cu2+, Ni2+, Pb2+, Fe2+, Hg2+ and Al3+) was investigated in CH2Cl2. It was found that the absorption spectra of probe 1 shows no differences for all ions titrations except in the presence of H+ and Hg2+ where a new longer wavelength band ...

He was admitted to the hospital 2 months later for dyspnoea and thoracic pain and was diagnosed with pneumonia. Hg deposits were seen in the lungs and extra-pulmonary organs. New sorbents based on magnetite particles coated with siliceous shells were synthesized and tested in the removal of mercury ions from aqueous solutions by magnetic separation. Atomic fluorescence spectroscopy studies performed on water samples treated with these sorbents have shown that the metal ion concentration decreased to values lower than the guideline values for drinking water. The high adsorption affinity for mercury ions in these materials was attributed to dithiocarbamate groups grafted ...

A zwitterionic ligand yields a trimetallic carbene complex (see structure), in which the metal centers are electronically coupled by a single ligand that employs both σ and π bonding. This imidazol-2-ylidene complex, derived from the imidazoliumcyclopentadienide zwitterion, reveals a carbene-ligand architecture that allows the incorporation of multiple metal and/or main-group element centers.

Interactions of mercury(II) with the microtubule network of cells may lead to genotoxicity. Complexation of mercury(II) with EDTA is currently being discussed for its employment in detoxification processes of polluted sites. This prompted us to re-evaluate the effects of such complexing agents on certain aspects of mercury toxicity, by examining the influences of mercury(II) complexes on tubulin assembly and kinesin-driven motility of microtubules. The genotoxic effects were studied using the micronucleus ...

Sorbents based on silica and silica coated magnetite particles have been functionalized with dithiocarbamate groups, aiming at the uptake of mercury. The uptake capacity of the synthesized materials were evaluated systematically for variable operational parameters including degree of functionalization, sorption time, sorbent dose, and initial Hg(II) concentration. Removal efficiencies of 99.6–99.9% were achieved in 8–24 h, regardless the sorbent dose, type of substrate and degree of functionalization. ...

The flux (Φ) of mercury (Hg) at the sediment-seawater interface was investigated in Augusta Bay (southern Italy) where uncontrolled industrial discharge from one of the most important chlor-alkali plant in Europe has caused significant negative effects on the environment. Hg fluxes were measured by the deployment of in-situ benthic chamber. The obtained value of 1.3 kmol y−1 clearly emphasizes the role of the sediments as source of Hg for the overlying water column. Moreover, Hg concentrations in the ...

Aβ42 is a small peptide formed from 42 aminoacids that presents a great propensity to aggregate until it forms fibrils. Aβ42 aggregation and fibrillation are very complex processes whose molecular mechanisms seem to depend on characteristics intrinsic to the peptide molecule, as well as extrinsic factors. Peptide concentration, mean pH and several substances, including metal ions, are principal extrinsic factors for the oligomerization process. Different metals affect the aggregation of the Aβ42 ...

This work reports the preparation of ferro-magnetic nickel nanowires (NiNW) coated with dithiocarbamate-functionalized siliceous shells and its application for the uptake of aqueous Hg(II) ions by magnetic separation. NiNW with an average diameter and length of 35 nm and 5 μm, respectively, were firstly prepared by Ni electrodeposition in an anodic aluminum oxide template. The NiNW surfaces were then coated with siliceous shells containing dithiocarbamate groups via a one-step procedure consisting ...

The sequelae of mercury intoxication include induction of apoptosis. In nucleated cells, Hg2+-induced apoptosis involves mitochondrial damage. The present study has been performed to elucidate effects of Hg2+ in erythrocytes which lack mitochondria but are able to undergo apoptosis-like alterations of the cell membrane. Previous studies have documented that activation of a Ca2+-sensitive erythrocyte scramblase leads to exposure of phosphatidylserine at the erythrocyte surface, a typical feature ...

The two mer operons of the Pseudomonas stutzeri OX plasmid pPB and their flanking regions have been sequenced and found to be part of two aberrant transposons. The narrow spectrum mer operon is almost identical to that of Tn501, but is associated with the remnants of Tn5053 tni genes rather than the Tn501 transposition module. The broad spectrum mer operon shows an overall homology with that of Tn5053, but differs from it in the presence of a merB gene, absent in Tn5053, and a merC gene instead ...
