The perception of taste is a prime example of complex signal transduction at the subcellular level, involving an intricate network of molecular machinery, which can be investigated to great extent by the tools provided by Computational Molecular Modelling. The present review summarises the current knowledge on the molecular mechanisms at the root of taste transduction, in particular involving taste receptors, highly specialised proteins driving the activation/deactivation of specific cell signalling ...

Taste is a sensory modality crucial for nutrition and survival, since it allows the discrimination between healthy foods and toxic substances thanks to five tastes, i.e., sweet, bitter, umami, salty, and sour, associated with distinct nutritional or physiological needs. Today, taste prediction plays a key role in several fields, e.g., medical, industrial, or pharmaceutical, but the complexity of the taste perception process, its multidisciplinary nature, and the high number of potentially relevant ...

A non-invasive approach to define grafts patency and stenosis in the follow-up of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) patients may be an interesting alternative to coronary angiography. 64-slice-coronary computed tomography is nowadays a diffused non-invasive method that permits an accurate evaluation of coronary stenosis, due to a high temporal and spatial resolution. However, its sensitivity and specificity in CABG evaluation has to be clearly defined, since published studies used different protocols ...

A new procedure for the alignment of carbon nanotubes in a thermosetting matrix is proposed in this study. The two-step approach is based on (i) the alignment of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in thermoplastic fibres by electrospinning and (ii) the transfer of these nanocompositefibres into a reactive thermosetting resin, in which they are easily soluble. After fibre dissolution, the CNTs remain aligned in the cured thermosetting matrix. The proof of concept is demonstrated by producing electrospunpolymethyl ...

Menstrually related migraine (MRM) is a particularly difficult-to-treat pain condition, associated with substantial disability. Aim of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety of frovatriptan and zolmitriptan in the treatment of MRM attacks, analyzing data from a multicenter, randomized, double blind, cross-over study. We analyzed the subset of 76 regularly menstruating women who participated in one head-to-head multicenter, randomized, double blind, cross-over clinical trial and who took ...

The objective of this study is to assess patients’ satisfaction with migraine treatment with frovatriptan (F) or zolmitriptan (Z), by preference questionnaire. 133 subjects with a history of migraine with or without aura (IHS criteria) were randomized to F 2.5 mg or Z 2.5 mg. The study had a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, cross-over design, with each of the two treatment periods lasting no more than 3 months. At the end of the study, patients were asked to assign preference to one of the treatments ( ...

Stringent lockdown measures implemented in Italy to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 are generating unprecedented economic impacts. However, the environmental consequences associated with the temporary shutdown and recovery of industrial and commercial activities are still not fully understood. Using the well-known carbon footprint (CF) indicator, this paper provides a comprehensive estimation of environmental effects due to the COVID-19 outbreak lockdown measures in Italy. Our aim was to quantify ...

We study the Kuramoto model for coupled oscillators. For the case of identical natural frequencies, we give a new proof of the complete frequency synchronization for all initial data; extending this result to the continuous version of the model, we manage to prove the complete phase synchronization for any non-atomic measure-valued initial datum. We also discuss the relation between the boundedness of the entropy and the convergence to an incoherent state for the case of non identical natural frequencies.

We study the kinetic Kuramoto model for coupled oscillators with coupling constant below the synchronization threshold. We manage to prove that, for any analytic initial datum, if the interaction is small enough, the order parameter of the model vanishes exponentially fast, and the solution is asymptotically described by a free flow. This behavior is similar to the phenomenon of Landau damping in plasma physics. In the proof we use a combination of techniques from Landau damping and from abstract ...

In this paper we analyze the asymptotic dynamics of a system of N quantum particles, in a weak coupling regime. Particles are assumed statistically independent at the initial time. Our approach follows the strategy introduced by the authors in a previous work [BCEP1]: we compute the time evolution of the Wigner transform of the one-particle reduced density matrix; it is represented by means of a perturbation series, whose expansion is obtained upon iterating the Duhamel formula; this approach allows ...

In this paper we consider a large system of bosons or fermions. We start with an initial datum which is compatible with the Bose–Einstein, respectively Fermi–Dirac, statistics. We let the system of interacting particles evolve in a weak-coupling regime. We show that, in the limit, and up to the second order in the potential, the perturbative expansion expressing the value of the one-particle Wigner function at time t, agrees with the analogous expansion for the solution to the Uehling–Uhlenbeck ...

In this paper we analyze a system of N identical quantum particles in a weak-coupling regime. The time evolution of the Wigner transform of the one-particle reduced density matrix is represented by means of a perturbative series. The expansion is obtained upon iterating the Duhamel formula. For short times, we rigorously prove that a subseries of the latter, converges to the solution of the Boltzmann equation which is physically relevant in the context. In particular, we recover the transition rate ...

In this Letter we present a very general method for extracting information from a generic string of characters, e.g., a text, a DNA sequence, or a time series. Based on data-compression techniques, its key point is the computation of a suitable measure of the remoteness of two bodies of knowledge. We present the implementation of the method to linguistic motivated problems, featuring highly accurate results for language recognition, authorship attribution, and language classification.

We study an incompressible non-viscous fluid with axial symmetry without swirl, in the case when the vorticity is supported in an annulus. It is well known that there exist particular initial data for which the Euler evolution reduces to a translation with a constant speed. In this paper we prove a similar property for any initial condition in the limit situation in which the initial vorticity is sharply concentrated. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

In this short note we correct a conceptual error in the heuristic derivation of a kinetic equation used for the description of a one-dimensional granular medium in the so called quasi-elastic limit, presented by the same authors in reference[1]. The equation we derived is however correct so that, the rigorous analysis on this equation, which constituted the main purpose of that paper, remains unchanged.

We consider a one-dimensional system of n inelastic particles on a line, with coefficient of restitution 1−2ε. We prove that if εn≲ln2 no collapses are possible for any initial datum, and we exhibit explicit collapsing solutions for εn≳π. For n=4 we construct a positive measure set of initial data which collapse in a finite time. For n=3 we also consider stochastic perturbations of the system and prove the occurrence of collapses with positive probability if ε is sufficiently close to 1/2. Finally, ...

In this note, we propose a formal argument identifying the hydrodynamic limit of a Fokker-Planck model for granular media appearing in [1]. More precisely, in the limit of large background temperature and vanishing friction, this hydrodynamic limit is described by the classical system of isentropic gas dynamics with a nonstandard pressure law (specifically, the pressure is proportional to the cube root of the density). Finally, some qualitative properties of the hydrodynamic model are studied.

In this paper we discuss a novel mathematical approach to authorship attribution which we implemented recently to face a concrete problem of author recognition. The fundamental ideas for our methods came from statistical mechanics and information theory. We combine two approaches. Both of them use similarity measures between couples of texts as indicators of stylistic closeness: the first one is based on the comparison of frequencies of fixed length substrings (n-grams) throughout the texts; the ...
