Graphite is an inexpensive material with useful electrical, magnetic, thermal, and optical properties. It is also biocompatible and used universally as a substrate. Micrometer-sized graphitic particles in solution are therefore ideal candidates for novel lab-on-a-chip and remote manipulation applications in biomedicine, biophysics, chemistry, and condensed-matter physics. However, submerged graphite is not known to be amenable to magnetic manipulation, the optimal manipulation method for such applications. ...

High-performing hybridization platforms fabricated by reactive microcontact printing of DNA probes are presented. Multishaped PDMS molds are used to covalently bind oligonucleotides over a functional copolymer (DMA-NAS-MAPS) surface. Printed structures with minimum width of about 1.5 μm, spaced by 10 μm, are demonstrated, with edge corrugation lower than 300 nm. The quantification of the immobilized surface probes via fluorescence imaging gives a remarkable concentration of 3.3 × 10(3) oligonucleotides/ ...

Obesity is a leading risk factor for metabolic syndrome whose further expression is non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Metabolic syndrome is associated with a proinflammatory state that contributes to insulin resistance. Finally, a "metabolically benign obesity" that is not accompanied by insulin resistance has recently been postulated to exist. To find whether any inflammation markers were independently associated with the presence of insulin resistance, evaluating specific anthropometric, ultrasonographic ...

Inside the spectrum of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, simple fatty liver is generally thought of as being "non progressive", differently from non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, which increases in severity due to the presence of apoptosis/inflammation and fibrosis. The "benignity" of fatty liver is widely accepted but conceptually difficult to maintain because the mechanisms underlying this entity are the same ones that determine the more severe form.Findings provide evidence that iron overload is ...

As the lymphotropism of hepatitis C virus (HCV) has already been ascertained, and in the light of the fact that the immune defense system is an organized network composed of functionally interrelated tissues, this study was carried out to verify the possible involvement of spleen in HCV-related chronic hepatitis. In this cross-sectional study we measured spleen longitudinal diameter by ultrasound, beta2-microglobulin serum levels and splenic artery resistivity index (SARI) by Doppler in 51 patients ...

Background: Tissue Polypeptide Specific antigen has recently been proposed as diagnostic marker of apoptosis in NonAlcoholic SteatoHepatitis. The aim of this study was to validate in patients suffering from NonAlcoholic SteatoHepatitis the clinical utility of this marker after different programs of weight reduction. Methods: Overweight/obese patients with visceral adiposity and liver histology compatible were assigned to a Calorically-Restricted diet ( n = 22), a Calorically-Restricted diet plus EXercise ( ...

SDH-deficient gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) account for 20-40% of all KIT/PDGFRA-negative GIST and are due to mutations in one of the four SDH-complex subunits, with SDHA mutations as the most frequent. Here we sought to evaluate the presence and prevalence of SDHA variants in the germline lineage in a population of SDHA-deficient GIST.Germline SDHA status was assessed by Sanger sequencing on a series of 14 patients with gastric SDHA-deficient GIST.All patients carried a germline SDHA pathogenic ...

In-vitro tests and analyses are of fundamental importance for investigating biological mechanisms in cells and bio-molecules. The controlled application of forces to activate specific bio-pathways and investigate their effects, mimicking the role of the cellular environment, is becoming a prominent approach in this field. In this work, we present a non-invasive magnetic on-chip platform which allows for the manipulation of magnetic particles, through micrometric magnetic conduits of Permalloy patterned ...

Summary. Depression is an usual finding in patients suffering from chronic hepatitis C. Development of moderate to severe depressive symptoms occurs frequently during pegylated interferon/ribavirin treatment and is generally predicted by baseline depression scores. Furthermore, the obese patients have been found to be twice as likely to suffer from anxiety, impaired social interaction, and depression when compared with the no obese population. In order to evaluate the efficacy of a pharmacological ...

Background—There are currently no effective therapies for diffuse malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (DMPM) patients with disease recurrence. In this study, we investigated the biology of DMPM by analyzing the EGFR family, Axl, and MET, in order to assess the presence of cross-talk between these receptors, suggesting the effectiveness of combined targeted treatments in DMPM. Method—We analyzed a series of 22 naïve epithelioid DMPM samples from a single institute, two of which showed higher-grade malignancy (“ ...

Enteric adenoviruses have historically been difficult to grow in cell culture, which has resulted in lack of knowledge of host factors and pathways required for infection of these medically relevant viruses. Previous studies in non-intestinal cell lines showed slow infection kinetics and generated comparatively low virus yields compared to other adenovirus types. We suggest duodenum-derived HuTu80 cells as a superior cell line for studies to complement efforts using complex intestinal tissue models. ...

In pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP), KRAS and GNAS mutations are frequent. We hypothesized that these mutations may contribute to the suppression of antitumor immunity: KRAS may induce GMCSF expression, while GNAS may enhance the expression of cyclic adenosine monophosphate and A2AR signaling. This study aimed to explore possible mechanisms facilitated by KRAS and GNAS mutations for escaping immune surveillance. Additionally, we looked for new potential therapeutic and prognostic targets in this rare ...

•At variance with other rare bleeding disorders, fibrinogen defects are prone to arterial and venous thrombosis, due to still partially known mechanisms, in addition to bleeding. •We report a novel missense mutation in the fibrinogen γ-chain gene (FGG) in a patient referred to our department because of a history of post-partum hemorrhages and likely hypo-dysfibrinogenemia, and in seven family members (with some members affected by arterial thrombosis and transient ischemic attack and cerebral gliosis). • ...

Background/Objectives: Recovery from severe mental illness is related to the idea of developing potentials and regaining a valid social role even with limitations caused by illness. A whole understanding of this subjective and dynamic process is still difficult. A systematic approach to evaluate recovery in people referring to mental health services is then needed in order to test out the efficacy and real utility of currently used practices and interventions.
