Cancer is still one of the deadliest diseases worldwide despite the efforts in its early detection and treatment strategies. However, most chemotherapeutic agents still present side effects in normal tissues and acquired resistance that limit their efficacy. Spiropyrazoline oxindoles might be good alternatives as they have shown antiproliferative activity in human breast and colon cancer cell lines, without eliciting cytotoxicity in healthy cells. However, their potential for ovarian cancer was ...

Sleep is a crucial aspect of the human daily life since it allows us to recover from physical and psychological fatigue and its lack can bring several consequences to human health. People spend around one third of their life sleeping but, despite that, their exposure to pollutants during sleep is often neglected. Specifically, students typically change their habits after entering university, due to the freedom that they are allowed at this stage of their lives. These habits often include their sleep ...

We revisit discovery prospects for a long-lived sterile neutrino $N$ at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in the context of left-right symmetric theories. We focus on a displaced vertex search strategy sensitive to $\mathcal{O}$(GeV) neutrino masses produced via a right-handed $W_{R}$ boson. Both on-shell and off-shell Drell-Yan production of $W_{R}$ are considered. We estimate the reach as a function of $m_{N}$ and $m_{W_{R}}$. With $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV and 300/fb of integrated luminosity, the LHC can probe neutrino ...

Brain tumor, as any type of cancer, is assumed to be sustained by a small subpopulation of stem-like cells with distinctive properties that allow them to survive conventional therapies and drive tumor recurrence. Thus, the identification of new molecules capable of controlling stemness properties may be key in developing effective therapeutic strategies for cancer by inducing stem-like cells differentiation. Spiropyrazoline oxindoles have previously been shown to induce apoptosis and cell cycle ...

Learning from imbalanced datasets is highly demanded in real-world applications and a challenge for standard classifiers that tend to be biased towards the classes with the majority of the examples. Undersampling approaches reduce the size of the majority class to balance the class distributions. Evolutionary-based approaches are prominent, treating undersampling as a binary optimisation problem that determines which examples are removed. However, their utilisation is limited to small datasets due ...

Abstract Cells can sense changes in their extracellular environment and subsequently adapt their biomass composition. Nutrient abundance defines the capability of the cell to produce biomass components. Under nutrient-limited conditions, resource allocation dramatically shifts to carbon-rich molecules. Here, we used dynamic biomass composition data to predict changes in growth and reaction flux distributions using the available genome-scale metabolic models of five eukaryotic organisms (three heterotrophs ...

Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is a promising technology that can produce biocrude oil from wet biomass. The biocrudes, while generally acknowledged to be more stable than pyrolysis oils, are still thought to degrade relatively quickly, which limits their applicability. In this investigation, the storage stability of biocrude produced from hydrothermal liquefaction of microalgae was systematically studied over 60 days, and the effect of the storage material, feedstock species, liquefaction temperature ...

Their advantages and limitations were identified. Likewise, the effect of reaction temperature and retention time was evaluated on the yield of the biocrude for the kinetic models for four hypothetical biomasses. From the analysis of the component additivity and kinetic models, a new quantitative model was proposed for the calculation ...

We tackle home healthcare planning scenarios in the UK using decomposition methods that incorporate mixed integer programming solvers and heuristics. Home healthcare planning is a difficult problem that integrates aspects from scheduling and routing. Solving real-world size instances of these problems still presents a significant challenge to modern exact optimization solvers. Nevertheless, we propose decomposition techniques to harness the power of such solvers while still offering a practical ...

In the context of information retrieval (IR) from text documents, the term weighting scheme (TWS) is a key component of the matching mechanism when using the vector space model. In this paper, we propose a new TWS that is based on computing the average term occurrences of terms in documents and it also uses a discriminative approach based on the document centroid vector to remove less significant weights from the documents. We call our approach Term Frequency With Average Term Occurrence (TF-ATO). ...

The workforce scheduling and routing problem (WSRP) is a combinatorial optimisation problem where a set of workers must perform visits to geographically scattered locations. We present a Variable Neighbourhood Search (VNS) metaheuristic algorithm to tackle this problem, incorporating two novel heuristics tailored to the problem-domain. The first heuristic restricts the search space using a priority list of candidate workers and the second heuristic seeks to reduce the violation of specific soft constraints. ...
