In his essay on the heretical schools of the Hindus, Mr. Colebrooke has given an account of the tenets of the Chāarvāakas, or Materialists (Misc. Essays, L, 402 ff). Professor Wilson also, in his “Sketch of the Religious Sects of the Hindus” (As. Ees., Vol. XVI., pp. 5, 6), alludes to the attacks made by the founder of the atheistical, or materialistic school, Vrihaspati, on the Vedas and the Brahmans, and quotes some verses attributed to that author, in which he asserts that “the whole Hindu system ...

Humans learn from their mistakes. When things go badly, we notice that something is amiss, figure out what went wrong and why, and attempt to repair the problem. Artificial systems depend on their human designers to program in responses to every eventuality and therefore typically don’t even notice when things go wrong, following their programming over the proverbial, and in some cases literal, cliff. This article describes our past and current work on the Meta-Cognitive Loop, a domain-general approach ...

Introduction Governments in different countries have committed to better use of evidence from research in policy. Although many programmes are directed at assisting agencies to better use research, there have been few tests of the effectiveness of such programmes. This paper describes the protocol for SPIRIT (Supporting Policy In health with Research: an Intervention Trial), a trial designed to test the effectiveness of a multifaceted programme to build organisational capacity for the use of research ...

Computational metacognition is a technical area of artificial intelligence whose aim is to increase the degree of autonomy and awareness an intelligent system has about its own reasoning and learning. In the literature, different models of metacognition are applied to artificial intelligent systems. However many of these models have a narrow focus, because they do not address comprehensively the elements of metacognition. This paper presents an analysis of metacognitive models discussed in the literature ...

The acaricidal activity of the petroleum ether extract of leaves of Tetrastigma leucostaphylum (Dennst.) Alston (family: Vitaceae) against Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) annulatus was assessed using adult immersion test (AIT). The per cent of adult mortality, inhibition of fecundity, and blocking of hatching of eggs were studied at different concentrations. The extract at 10% concentration showed 88.96% inhibition of fecundity, 58.32% of adult tick mortality, and 50% inhibition of hatching. Peak mortality ...

Green chemistry is playing an important role for synthesizing organic compounds, due to its eco-friendly nature and low cost. In green chemistry, metal nanoparticles exhibited some useful physical and chemical properties (catalytic activity). Due to its diverse properties, nanoparticles can be utilized as a catalyst in various organic reactions. Recent research has been directed towards the utilization of eco-friendly and bio-friendly plant materials in nanoparticles synthesis. In our present work, ...

In order to optimize the cost of construction, engineers have always been on the lookout for efficient and light roofing which requires minimum maintenance and labor to install. Coir is a green building material and has potential as a raw material for the production of roofing materials like corrugated sheets and tiles. The main objective of the paper is to produce cost effective roofing tiles without compromising their quality by replacing cement up to 15% using coir fibre. On the basis of the ...

The present study compares the in vitro efficacy of four chemical acaricides, viz. amitraz, coumaphos, deltamethrin and lindane, against Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) annulatus and Haemaphysalis bispinosa ticks based on adult immersion tests. Amitraz, at 350 ppm, elicited 29.2 ± 4.17% mortality against R. (B.) annulatus, 100% inhibition of fecundity and absence of hatching of eggs laid by treated ticks. The same compound at 300 ppm caused 62.5 ± 12.5% mortality against H. bispinosa, 96.7% inhibition of fecundity ...

As the demand for marine ornamental fish is ever increasing, the industry largely relies on collections from natural habitat due to insufficient breeding and seed production technologies. Fishes of the family Pomacentridae are popular in marine aquaria throughout the world. Among these, damsel fishes of the genus Dascyllus has high demand and are mostly collected from the wild. With markets concentrating predominantly in and around large cities, gig platforms across the globe seem to depend as much on the cheap labor of migrants and minorities as on investment capital and permissive governments. Accordingly, we argue that there is an urgent need to center migrant experiences and the role of migrant labor in gig economy research, in order to generate a better understanding of how gig work offers certain opportunities and challenges to migrants with a variety of backgrounds ...

TikTok is commonly known as a playful, silly platform where teenagers share 15-second videos of crazy stunts or act out funny snippets from popular culture. In the past few years, it has experienced exponential growth and popularity, unseating Facebook as the most downloaded app. Interestingly, recent news coverage notes the emergence of TikTok as a political actor in the Indian context. They raise concerns over the abundance of divisive content, hate speech, and the lack of platform accountability ...

Abstract Two‐coordinate Cu(I) and Au(I) complexes supported by bicyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene, [BICAAC‐CuCl] ( 1 ), [BICAAC‐CuI] ( 2 ), [(BICAAC) 2 Cu] + [PF 6 ] – ( 3 ) and [(BICAAC) 2 Au] + [AuCl 2 ] – ( 6 ) have been synthesized. The reaction of cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene, CAAC cy with CuCl afforded [CAAC cy ‐CuCl] ( 4 ) and its further reaction with KPF 6 gave [(CAAC cy ) 2 Cu] + [PF 6 ] – ( 5 ). In Audio Steganography we find a way so that an audio file can be used as a host media to hide textual message without affecting the file structure and content of the audio file. In this system a novel high bit rate LSB audio data hiding and another method known as Pixel value differencing is proposed. This scheme reduces embedding distortion of the host audio. The hidden bits are embedded into the higher LSB layers resulting in increased robustness against noise addition. To avoid major differences ...
