The Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) is designed to measure the scale of baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) in the clustering of matter over a larger volume than the combined efforts of all previous spectroscopic surveys of large-scale structure. BOSS uses 1.5 million luminous galaxies as faint as i = 19.9 over 10,000 deg2 to measure BAO to redshifts z < 0.7. Observations of neutral hydrogen in the Lyα forest in more than 150,000 quasar spectra (g < 22) will constrain BAO over the redshift ...

Trent Hall, Daryl R. Chastain, Patrick J. Horn, Kent D. Chapman, John S. Choinski,

In this project, we hypothesize that cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) leaf temperature and the responses of leaf photosynthesis to temperature will change as the leaves expand and that differences between young and mature leaves will be associated with the proportion of saturated fatty acids in thylakoid and other membrane lipids. To that end, we studied main stem leaves obtained from plants growing in a temperature controlled greenhouse and at different times in the field season. We found that young ...

Rosaria Furlano, Elizabeth Kelley, Layla Hall, Daryl E. Wilson,

Research has demonstrated that, despite difficulties in multiple domains, children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) show a lack of awareness of these difficulties. A misunderstanding of poor competencies may make it difficult for individuals to adjust their behaviour in accordance with feedback and may lead to greater impairments over time. This study examined self‐perceptions of adolescents with ASD ( n = 19) and typically developing (TD) mental‐age‐matched controls ( n = 22) using actual performance ...

The corrosive behaviour of loaded amine solvents was evaluated under stripper operating conditions, for post-combustion carbon capture, to determine the feasibility of using carbon steel in plant construction. In addition to monoethanolamine, three alternative amine solvents: methyldiethanolamine (MDEA), 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (AMP), 1-(2-aminoethyl)piperazine (AEPZ), and the common additive K2CO3 were studied when in contact with carbon steel (C1018) over a 28-day period. Corrosive behaviour was ...

Playas are seasonal wetlands that constitute the principal surface-water features of the semiarid, Southern High Plains, USA. They are shallow pools that usually persist for 2-4 mo following inundation by spring rains. The development of macroinvertebrate assemblages in 10 playas located in West Texas was examined during the summer of 1994. Playas were sampled 3 times at approximately monthly intervals, beginning shortly after initial inundation in early May. All playas were dry within 90 d. Species ...

People often misattribute the causes of their thoughts and feelings. The authors propose a multinomial process model of affect misattributions, which separates three component processes. The first is an affective response to the true cause of affect. The second is an affective response to the apparent cause. The third process is when the apparent source is confused for the real source. The model is validated using the affect misattribution procedure (AMP), which uses misattributions as a means to ...

Daryl B. O’Connor, Louise Hall, Judith Johnson,

It is well established that high levels of work-related stress are impacting negatively on health, wellbeing and work-related outcomes in healthcare professionals. There is also growing evidence to show that job strain, burnout and low wellbeing are associated with poor patient safety and medical errors. In the UK, errors are estimated to cost the National Health Service over a billion pounds in litigation costs, and £2 billion in additional bed days annually. Therefore, there is an urgent need to ...

Immunomodulatory drugs (IMiDs), including thalidomide, lenalidomide, and pomalidomide, have improved survival of patients with multiple myeloma (MM). However, these therapies are associated with an increased risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). Apixaban has been approved for treatment of acute VTE and for risk reduction of recurrent VTE following initial therapy. In this phase IV single-arm study (NCT02958969), we aim to prospectively evaluate the safety and efficacy of apixaban for primary prevention ...
