A convenience sample of three public school classrooms (one first, third, and fifth grade class) was observed implementing the TAKE 10! program while monitored by either CSA accelerometers or digital pedometers. Abstract Approximately 22% of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients suffer from seizures, and the co-occurrence of seizures and epileptiform activity exacerbates AD pathology and related cognitive deficits, suggesting that seizures may be a targetable component of AD progression. Given that alterations in neuronal excitatory:inhibitory (E:I) balance occur in epilepsy, we hypothesized that decreased markers of inhibition relative to those of excitation would be present in AD patients. We similarly hypothesized ...

Gil McVean and colleagues report a meta-analysis of Immunochip studies including over 17,000 multiple sclerosis cases and 30,000 controls, with imputation of classical HLA alleles. They find two interactions involving class II HLA alleles but no evidence for significant epistatic interactions or interactions between HLA and non-HLA risk variants. Association studies have greatly refined the understanding of how variation within the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genes influences risk of multiple sclerosis. ...

Abstract The risk of seizures is 10-fold higher in patients with Alzheimer’s disease than the general population, yet the mechanisms underlying this susceptibility and the effects of these seizures are poorly understood. To elucidate the proposed bidirectional relationship between Alzheimer’s disease and seizures, we studied human brain samples (n = 34) from patients with Alzheimer’s disease and found that those with a history of seizures (n = 14) had increased amyloid-β and tau pathology, with upregulation ...

David A. Stewart, David Dietz,

The introduction of total mesorectal excision (TME) for rectal cancer has reduced local recurrence rates and improved oncologic outcomes, although complication rates such as anastomotic leak have also been a consequence. With the advent of neoadjuvant therapy for rectal cancer, many are questioning how this development may change the role of TME. This review presents a history of how TME evolved and a description of this technique. Complication rates, the impact of neoadjuvant therapy on local recurrence, ...

Susceptibility to the development of asthma and other atopic diseases is known to have a genetic component. To date, several studies have linked chromosome 5q31 to asthma and atopy in human beings. This region harbors a cluster of cytokine and growth factor genes, IL-4 presenting as a prime atopy candidate gene, inasmuch as it plays a pivotal role in the atopy pathway. Our approach was to identify polymorphisms within the promoter regions of IL-4 and test their association with atopic eczema. Polymorphisms ...

This article describes an empirically derived mathematical model of the treatment dose-response of occlusion therapy for amblyopia based on outcome data obtained from the Monitored Occlusion Treatment for Amblyopia Study (MOTAS).The MOTAS protocol comprised three discrete phases: baseline, refractive adaptation, and occlusion. Only data from the occlusion phase were used in this dose-response model. Seventy-two participants, 3 to 8 years of age, mean +/- SD age 5.2 +/- 1.4 years (anisometropia [n = 18]); strabismus [ ...
