Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection causes chronic hepatitis in solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients. Antiviral therapy consists of three months of ribavirin, although response rates are not optimal. We characterized plasma HEV kinetic patterns in 41 SOT patients during ribavirin therapy. After a median pharmacological delay of three (range: 0-21) days, plasma HEV declined from a median baseline level of 6.12 (3.53-7.45) log copies/mL in four viral kinetic patterns: (i) monophasic (

Background. Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection is an emerging disease in industrialized countries. Few data regarding genotype 3 HEV extrahepatic manifestations exist. Methods. We assessed kidney function and histology in solid-organ transplant patients during HEV infection. In all, 51 cases of genotype 3 HEV infections were diagnosed (34 kidney, 14 liver, and 3 kidney-pancreas transplant patients). Of these, 43.2% were cleared of the virus spontaneously within 6 months of infection, whereas 56.8% ...

Hepatitis E virus (HEV)-related kidney disease and symptomatic cryoglobulinemia have been observed in solid-organ transplant recipients. However, HEV RNA in the cryoprecipitate has not yet been assessed. We report what to our knowledge is the first documented case of autochthonous HEV-induced cryoglobulinemic crescentic and membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis in an immunocompetent man with no notable medical history. He presented with edema, hypertension, increased serum creatinine level, and ...

This essay in the history of ideas seeks to trace the development of creed formation in Judaism from its inception with Moses Maimonides (1135-1204) to the beginning of the sixteenth-century, when systematic attention to the problem disappeared from the agenda of Jewish intellectuals. Dr Kellner describes, analyses, and compares the dogmatic systems of Maimonides, Duran, Crescas, Albo, Bibado, Abravanel, among others. English translations are presented for relevant texts, which, for the most part, ...

Hepatitis E virus genotype 3 (HEV3) and 4 (HEV4) can progress to chronic hepatitis in immunosuppressed patients.1 Ribavirin therapy has been shown to be efficient for treating chronic HEV infection in solid-organ-transplant recipients.2,3 Eighty percent of patients achieved a sustained virological response 24 weeks (SVR24) after ribavirin cessation.3 However, the optimal duration of ribavirin therapy is still undetermined. A rapid decrease of HEV RNA in blood under therapy was associated with SVR24.

Hepatitis-E virus (HEV) infection can be responsible for chronic hepatitis in solid-organ transplant patients. We identified 33 cases of autochthonous acute HEV infection in solid-organ transplant patients.Among 27 HEV-positive patients, who had a follow-up of more than 6 months, 16 (59.25%) evolved to chronic HEV infection, defined by persisting elevated liver-enzyme levels and positive serum HEV RNA 6 months after diagnosis. Serial liver biopsies showed progression in liver activity and liver fibrosis. ...

Abstract Background The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends routine HIV testing in all healthcare settings, but it is unclear how consistently physicians adopt the recommendation. Making the most of each interaction between black physicians and their patients is extremely important to address the HIV health disparities that disproportionately afflict the black community. The goal of this survey-based study was to evaluate the perceptions and practices of black, primary care physicians ...

Ribavirin is efficient at treating chronic hepatitis E virus infection in solid-organ transplant patients. However, the early kinetics of viral replication under therapy and the impact of immunosuppressant regimens on viral replication are unknown: thus, determining the aim of our study.Thirty-five patients with a solid-organ transplant and chronic hepatitis E virus infection were given ribavirin for 3 months. The hepatitis E virus (HEV) RNA concentrations were determined before treatment, at days ...

Malignancies and lymphoma are common complications after kidney transplantation. However, no link has been made between the incidence of malignancies and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in this setting. This case-controlled study compared the incidence of malignancies, including lymphoma, between kidney transplant (KT) patients with or without HCV replication.A total of 99 HCV-positive RNA-positive KT patients were matched with 198 (1:2) anti-HCV-negative patients according to age, gender, and date ...

ABSTRACT The pretherapeutic presence of protease inhibitor (PI) resistance-associated variants (RAVs) has not been shown to be predictive of triple-therapy outcomes in treatment-naive patients. However, they may influence the outcome in patients with less effective pegylated interferon (pegIFN)-ribavirin (RBV) backbones. Using hepatitis C virus (HCV) population sequence analysis, we retrospectively investigated the prevalence of baseline nonstructural 3 (NS3) RAVs in a multicenter cohort of poor IFN-RBV ...

The imminent release of tissue atlases combining multichannel microscopy with single-cell sequencing and other omics data from normal and diseased specimens creates an urgent need for data and metadata standards to guide data deposition, curation and release. We describe a Minimum Information about Highly Multiplexed Tissue Imaging (MITI) standard that applies best practices developed for genomics and for other microscopy data to highly multiplexed tissue images and traditional histology.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a major cause of acute viral hepatitis. Better understanding of HEV subtypes involved in hepatitis E infections is essential. Investigation of sources and routes of transmission and the identification of potential clusters/outbreaks rely upon molecular typing of viral strains. A study was carried out to evaluate the ability of laboratories to undertake molecular typing with genotype and subtype determination.A blinded panel of 11 different Orthohepevirus A strains was distributed ...
